Nevyn72 Posted June 5, 2024 Posted June 5, 2024 (edited) So I just went to watch a movie and discovered my AVR, a Denon AVR-4311 is dead as a door nail. I only used it a couple of days ago too...  Given the age I think I'll replace it rather than trying to get it fixed.  All I really need is effectively a switch/pre-pro for Bluray, HD-DVD (yep still use it occasionally), and streaming. Power is handled by an Elektra Theatron and 2ch by some Primare gear with HT passthrough. Speakers are 7.1, but I would like the option to reinstate the second sub at some stage in the future. Room is a dedicated HT and media room with acoustic treatments.  No requirement for 4K, not going to upgrade everything else as well to make that happen!  I was thinking I could just sub in a current gen Denon X2800H cost effectively, the X3800H would be overkill in my circumstances. The less spent the better as the room is used relatively infrequently these days and more for music via the Primare gear.  Thoughts?  EDIT: So scratch the X2800H, it has no pre-outs... Next step up with the X3800H? Edited June 5, 2024 by Nevyn72
Quark Posted June 5, 2024 Posted June 5, 2024 The X3800 has the upgraded version of Audyssey, XT32 rather than the X2800's version. Bass management in the room correction is much better as a result. Â Some other brands offer Dirac room correction, which is a further improvement, but it's often an additional licencing cost.

Guest Posted June 5, 2024 Posted June 5, 2024 Don't know what your budget is, but there are a few options in the Classifieds    And a few more if you are prepared to pay more... Â
WasM Posted June 5, 2024 Posted June 5, 2024 If wanting new Klapp AV are having 20% Denon range EOFY sale.

Nevyn72 Posted June 6, 2024 Author Posted June 6, 2024 (edited) So there I am, having just arrived home with my newly acquired Denon X3800H AVR, I head down to the media room to start removing the Dead, old, 4311... Except it isn't... having been turned off at the powerpoint for a day and it's sprung back to life! *Sigh*  I watch a movie and it behaves flawlessly... Oh well, I guess I'll just have to wait and see if it fails again in the near future. At least I have the replacement on hand for that eventuality.  If it keeps on keeping on the loungeroom system* is about to get a monster upgrade! * Currently being driven by an old Pioneer SL-71 Edited June 6, 2024 by Nevyn72 1 1
WasM Posted June 6, 2024 Posted June 6, 2024 I've had that happen to my on an old sony avr. In that case the power transformer was switching between working or not. It eventually crapped out. I would be careful and not leave the thing powered on at the wall socket just to be on safe side.Â

As @betty boop mentioned keep using your 4311.  If it keeps on working I plan to!  It's a bit of a waste as it's only acting as a pre-pro, for a couple of sources, occasionally...  Hopefully it does keep working as the loungeroom setup would benefit from the X3800H a lot more given it has multiple 4K capable devices but an AVR that can't take advantage of it. 2
