Having recently put in some Atmos speakers for the first time, I've (obviously) been paying attention to how much those height channels get used in the movies I'm watching. The stand out so far has been the opening titles of Ford vs Ferrari - really clever use of ALL the speakers with cars, crowd, radio commentary, and other sounds bouncing around everywhere. It reminded me of some of my other favourite movie audio moments (in no particular order) -

  • Edge of Tomorrow - The opening titles (Bluray version) use the most ridiculous bass rolls and rumbles I've heard... great way to show off a decent subwoofer.
  • Tenet - The reverse-highway heist with  the sounds (and soundtrack) adding so much realism to the mind-bending car antics... and yes, some great bass
  • 1917 - The trench scenes at that start have such immersive audio.
  • Contact - The opening pan from Earth out to multiple solar systems while the audio morphs and moves around you
  • The Art of Flight - (Technically) the opening with the DTS balls whizzing and bouncing in with some awesome bass, merging into the opening titles that also have great sound effects, and then into that M83 soundtrack as Travis Rice gets ready to hit the peaks.
  • Mad Max: Fury Road - That long desert chase scene leading up to the mega-dust storm, just awesome grunty audio that seems to swallow you.
  • Oppenheimer - The early visions of Oppenheimer with lights and atoms bouncing around and the sounds being equally freaky.
  • Star Wars: Attack of the Clones - Those sonic charges dropped from Slave 1 with the lovely audio delay before the impact.
  • Gravity - Again, the opening with the build-up to the debris collision, sounds are just popping up everywhere (I've heard that the Atmos mix is pretty special)

Anyways, that's a start. I definitely notice a trend where most of my favourite audio scenes have a lot of bass. The Atmos speakers certainly add the necessary 'atmos-phere' (of course), with the soundtrack being a common feature. But I'm also interested to hear of other titles that have unique sounds coming from the heights.

You should definitely look at Top Gun: Maverick in 4K. The opening test flight in particular is amazing.

I've not watched Dune Part 2 yet. I couldn't help but smile at the opening credits. Can't wait to fire that one up at home.

Thanks! Actually, you reminded me that the opening sequence from Top Gun Maverick was what the AV installers used as a demo from my collection when they wired in the Atmos speakers. Agreed, very immersive sequence. Need to crank that one up again. Dune 2 is on my shopping list, though I might have to watch the first one again to refresh my memory (I watched it when I had my old speaker system).

Opening sequence from Blade Runner is one of my favourites - sets the scene.

Yeah good one... I've got that on 4k, but haven't played it for a while (I remember being super impressed with the transfer they did on it). Will listen out for that audio.

SAS: Rise of the Black Swan

Netflix

Specific scenes where the height channels are notably active:

Train Hijacking Scene: Sounds of the train, the echoing tunnel and the overhead action.

Also, the explosive sequences: Throughout the movie, various explosive scenes benefit from the height channels.

Additionally, the dialogues are very well done. :thumb:

Hadn't heard of this one... added to the watchlist! Thanks!
