Jimboz Posted August 15, 2024 Posted August 15, 2024 An oddity but why do some brands eg Marantz sometimes have copper/metallic knobs on an otherwise black chassis? it seems to be generally on the second hand market and not in pics of new reviews, is it a knob replacement thing? Or did someone actually design them as an option - upgrade to a heavy metal knob sir? Just seems odd to me. There’s eg a Marantz receiver on Marketplace with a black volume and copper selector. a silly topic I know. sorry.

I noticed this in a thread on a FB hifi page - it does seem that the anodising on well used knobs is turning gold/brass colour???

Like this… and the more regular black one… Does seem weird but perhaps oils from fingers is causing the issue, could also be an indicator of quality of the anodising , I’ve seem other anodising items fade/change colour? my understanding is that only aluminium can be anodised , so it’s unlikely the knobs would be brass or copper underneath - but I did notice another article stating any metal can be anodised, providing it has been electroplated with aluminium first ?? Jimboz Posted August 15, 2024 Author Posted August 15, 2024 Thanks cafe - yep perhaps - I may drop Marantz a line I’m intrigued. I would have thought it wouldn’t be even coating though and I only ever touch the outer bit. I did have a marantz black receiver ages ago but maybe the knobs were plastic, but they stayed black - Someone must have bought a black Marantz receiver with metallic knobs as standard (or not). I did see similar happen with Naim and there’s lots of discussion about knob polishing therein https://community.naimaudio.com/t/discoloured-knob/19532/17
