Hi everyone,

I have following problem. I want to buy Advance Paris X-Stream 9 device. Main aim is to connect external hard disk where my CD's are copied in .wav form, to play them on BOSE Lifestyle 12 audio system. I came to audio equipment store with brand new WD (Western digital) My Passport 2TB external hard disk. Disk was formated using NTFS protocol. There are 2 directories on the disc- each with one musical album - files in .wav format. There are no other files o the disk. Hard disk was connected to USB input of Advance Paris X-Stream 9 device, but device did not recognize it. We have tried to connect same disk to the other similar devices (from Technics and Advance Paris), but non of them has recognized disc connected to USB port. We have connected than same disc to PC, and there disc and it's content were visible. We have reformated disc in xFAT format, moved same two directories to the disc, but same HI-FI devices did not recognize the disc again. Does anyone know what's wrong and how to solve my "problem". Thanks a lot in advance for help.

Possibly the streamer devices do not have enough power available on their USB ports to power the disk drive (does it spin up evenly with similar vibrations and clicks to when it is attached and working on a PC?).    Maybe try an SSD disk?

Also possible the streamers can't handle the size.

From the manual:

Using a USB hard disk or NAS network hard disk:

connect your hard disk formatted in FAT32 with a maximum capacity of 128GB.

Now youd think that a streamer with USB you'd have them to be 2A capable!

I have a similar problem with the Marantz SACD 30n.  My dealer contacted Marantz who said the USB drives needs to be less than 1a, or self powered.  I have tried 6 different USB drives, only the old 8 year old spinning drives worked.  None of my modern USB SDD drives were recognised.  I am yet to search for a 1a USB SDD drive.

SSD should draw less than the spinning drive so you must be having a different problem with the SSD types.  Such as also mentioned - too large.

It’s possible, Marantz provided 3 or 4 pre reps, number of files, power draw, format type and one or two others.  Size of drive was not mentioned.  I ticked all the boxes, but the power draw was unknown.

What is concerning is that Marantz could not provide me with a drive that works, I am am struggling to find a 56GB drive these days.  We also thought it may have something to do with USB 3, although I know they are suppose to be backward capable.

my FLAC files are my main source of music, so it is a little disappointing. I will most likely buy a streamer in the next 12 months, I wanted CD drive, so I just accepted it

Why do you want 56 GB?  Anyway, can't you just partition it to the smaller size?

I have had some cheap controllers in cheap external drive cases that have refused to work.

It's pretty clear that the company never bothered to provide firmware updates as USB drive tech advanced. As good as the CD drives themselves are, the app and streaming support never got past basic functionality and support, must be ten years out of date by now.

The company has basically orphaned its older players and streamers (I have one also) - a big warning to anyone looking to get the newest generation of their streamer/player (if there's even one in the works).

The retails should know this and advise potential customers accordingly.

Sorry Aussie

that was a joke - referring to a new CDP Network player that will only support ten year old USB drives that you cannot buy anymore.

on another forum, I have seen how users make their own USB drives via components, this may be a solution

I agree Steff.  I have only just ventured into streaming, aside from Spotify, I trialed  Lumin T3, and the HEOS app is nowhere near as good as the Lumin app.

but like I said, I was looking for a CDP and. streamer, Streamers confused me, but I will probs buy one in the next 12 months, so hopefully my USB  issue will go away

Depends on the size.  There’s a balance where once a specific number has exceeded,  SSD draws more power.

That’s crazy,   my OPPO 105 can have a 2TB portable USB 3.0 spinner in any rear port and it will work!  Not only that it accepts fat/exfat/ntfs formated drives  without issues.  I use exfat because Apple does not support ntfs.
unfortunately not all USB implementation is the same,  some USB interfacehave a PD input that’s only for power so you can drive devices and that includes USB 3.0

Yes it is, the Marantz replaced my Oppo.  I googled it, and there are others who have had the same issue with the Marantz.  I found my notes, the requirements are

less then 1amp draw

max index of 8 levels of folders

Fat32 or NTFS

max 5000 files in a folder

There is nothing about size of drive.
