Thought id mention a spinny effect to concentrate ones system imaging proweness upon cupping ones ears with both hand behind ears.

The centre images takes on a trippy clarity by funnelling some of the lost highs into ones flappers.

Sure it'll cut out some unwanted room reflections also.

Easy simply fun to try , just dont get too into it as per first pick ...

Its scary how much difference it makes ,  seems to compensate somewhat for older ears .  Mickey Mouse ears next big thing in audio? Gets a bit tiring holding hands there though.

Serioously, i'd wear something that was comfortable and didnt make me look like a total wanker.

But I'd have to adjust amp levels to counter perceived "brightness" , which I can do with a 3 way active system.

Fantastic discussion here of a very elusive idea......  it creates a distinction between what is the best speaker / amp / component / gear ( which is a technological issue )     and what produces an emotional response (which, in a way, is the opposite,  as it is so very much of being human )

HamishC relates the experience of his friend brought to tears by an orchestra piece from his childhood played through a great system and I think there is a lot in this experience ........   a few weeks ago we say Dylan's Don't look Back at the Ritz which has a great sound system ...... the first song that Joan Baez sang had me mesmerised with tears running down my face ........   and when I thought about it I think what was so emotional for me was  that the song / music dragged me back 50 years ago to my youth .....   it was that feeling of loss through advancing age that really came out in that moment......

so my point is this ......    for an emotional response, is it  that the sound quality is absolutely fantastic ( the BEST that can be ).  or is it that the music is just very good but taps into some deeply personal moment / experience in our lives - some feeling of nostalgia or loss or joy  ( I know quite a few people who get teary when watching the Olympics or crappy Bank ads etc )

Only one thing is certain though .........   a really good audio system will probably help you get closer to that emotional response ....... and that is what keeps me in the hunt for that next " missing "  link in my own system.

PS the discussion here about Martin Logans and Big horn systems brings out a bit of regret on my part......   have heard Martin Logans a few times and am astounded at what they can do with VOICES ........   haven't had the opportunity to hear the Big horn systems but I'm sure they too would be amazing .......   BUT the space they require rules them out for me in a family dining room......  but hey, still loving my Yammies ( and if you can't be with the one you love, love the one your with )

I have listened to systems up to about $300K.  Over a certain $ mark one I could not fault them, but some did nothing for me, others gave me goose bumps (including about a $12K one).

Over the years I have tried, within my modest budget, many items of popular and not so popular brand names. Few items stayed, the ones that did for one or other reason just gelled with me. as in I would get goosebumps, or the hairs in my neck would raise or I would get emotional or I was on another planet. (I need to add at all times no additives were consumed.)

It is the emotional connection, and different systems will "speak" to different persons.  It is a wonderful hobby journey, isnt it.
