BAM Posted September 29, 2024 Posted September 29, 2024 I have a Apply TV. I have recently read of upgrades to Apple TV relating to power supply. I have had some experience with linear power supplies always giving better results vs a switch mode power supply. The power supply cannot be very substantial but does seem to do the job. Has any one tried a Roku with a good linear supply?
BAM Posted October 1, 2024 Author Posted October 1, 2024 I already have a Antipodes 12v linear power supply so to buy a Roku for the experiment is not a big investment. Will report my findings.
Guest Posted October 1, 2024 Posted October 1, 2024 My experience suggests that better HDMI has more impact than a linear power supply on the audio of media players. The impact of a LPS was marginal on a Dune media player. The Dune, using standard power supply and with better HDMI, beat 2 different Zidoo media players, one with a better power supply. Similar reports on Zidoo forum that models with better HDMI (Neo models, Z3000 Pro, UHD8000) produced better audio. Yes, results are not for the Roku, but would not be surprised if a LPS gives only minimal improvement.
BAM Posted October 1, 2024 Author Posted October 1, 2024 I am not expecting any major improvement. I have a Ziddo UHD 3000 which equals or beats my Oppo player. Streaming 4k movies do not compare but there is hope. Upgrade my HDMI cables. Maybe the cable upgrade will improve my Apple TV. I still suspect linear power supply will improve audio.

The Zidoo UHD 3000 is supposed to have a better power supply but still lost to my Dune Real Vision 4K in audio. Video was about the same. Video on Oppo 203 was behind both because it used an older Realtek chip, audio about the same as Zidoo. SQ is largely influenced by HDMI, not power supply. As long as HDMI cables are HDMI 2.0/2.1 compliant, could not find a difference by changing them. If you want better video and audio, suggest the Zidoo Z3000 Pro or UHD9000.

I probably will upgrade my Zidoo in the future. I did originally looked at the Dune. Made in Russia so no.
Steever Posted October 1, 2024 Posted October 1, 2024 (edited) BAM, where in the fine state of Qld are you situated? Im in Yeronga in Brisbane and have a 12VDC modded ATV 4K (A1842) we could try if you’re local. Message me if you want. I also have a pretty decent Wireworld Silver Starlight 5 HDMI cable we can swap in and out. Edited October 1, 2024 by Steever

Yes - I have a Roku and l powered it with a $2k plus linear power supply . Without the linear power supply the Roku picture is quite terrible compared to Apple TV. The linear power supply greatly improved the picture but it still fell well short of the Apple TV. Roku is now used as a paper weight . 1

I should also point out that I was using mine with a projector on a 140" screen where any difference s will be magnified and made obvious. I didn't try on a TV which may be more forgiving.

BAM Posted November 26, 2024 Author Posted November 26, 2024 I have always used HDMI cables in the $200 to $300 per metre bracket (Monster) not experiencing any difference in video and sound quality. Recently I purchased a Audioquest Carbon HDMI cable ($299) which is very good but no perceived improvement. Maybe needs run in. My curiosity got the better of me. I purchased a Audioquest Vodka hdmi ( $749) from Terry ONeill ( GC Hi Fi) Results: Wow. Video has improved. Colour more vibrant and better blacks but it's the audio where it really shines. Deeper bass, better definition. There is no going back, The results are consistent with the Zidoo UHD 3000 and the Apple TV. I am still in disbelief that this little Apple tv can sound so good connected to the Vodka cable. I had a chance to experience a Audioquest Dragon ($1750) on a large projector. Improvements in video were evident 1
