Just don’t use i2s, there’s no benefit to it.  Use USB if you can.

I've been using USB. I have an ATLAS usb and an Audioquest. The atlas sounds disgusting and the audioquest sounds quite good. I've always found that Optical sounds a bit more natural than usb and once again I'm finding USB is a bit 2D in sound. However it's got a lot more detail than the optical but the optical still sounds more natural.

He can't use i2s as he does not have two components that can communicate via i2s.

Sounds like a good outcome all round then.

I'm glad I have no USB devices.

I don't need them

How well the input type works can depend on the manufacturer’s preference and the effort they put into each input circuitry.

With i2s the is no conversion at either the sending end or the receiving end, with other tech there is.

But not all manufacturers use i2s out, and, some who do provide i2s convert their preferred output to i2s internally.
It’s all down to implementation.
i2s is not universally better than all other formats.
e.g Ted Smith clearly says that in the DS mk1 the i2s input is technically better than USB (but he says USB is good enough for him when testing) however on the DS mk2 he improved the circuits and now the mk2 is agnostic to input format choice (depending on what resolution you want to feed the DAC).

Well in my situation it's native to my transport internally, and my DAC also, it is the better option in my situation.

Very misleading and confusing. I actually thought the Gustaf cable was wired for hdmi out and I2s in. It seems though the 2 formats are not compatible and those who've tried get hash noise and very low volume.

Correct, the two data formats are totally different, so a simple pin to pin conversion won't work. You'd need to get a data converter that would involve signal processing circuitry.
