I'd love the ACCC to clearly state if a manufacturer has any legal standing to say that a warranty applies only to the original owner, or not.

I’ll ask my wife and come back to you, but I think it’s unlikely that they will do something like this because of the substantial potential variability of circumstances and the complexity of relevant legislation and not wanting to risk misleading consumers.

I can tell you that in most circumstances that she works on manufacturers are required to honour the warranty, and the fair use provision and indeed they do so when pushed by ACCC.

Plain and simple i want to know an original receipt exists... otherwise i am left wondering if is this stolen goods...is it even legit ? is it a grey import ? to me an original invoice like original packaging, manuals, remote and accessories etc all add value to me for the item. i realise not an issue for some but it is an issue for me.

folks can cross out their name and details but often i want to verify item is legit if bit supicious and will ask for a copy of receipt so i can verify item was infact bought from a retailer(usually with receipt number... we are faced with all sort of scams these days...

things like items being grey imports are an issue if dont have local support.. i want to know this if buying an item. and i dont simply take someones (usually a strangers) word for this. i want to verify this myself. not find out later i have been scammed.

not having a receipt because its lost is shaky ground these days as you can ring most retail places(specialist stores) and they are all in the computer age and will retrieve and email you a receipt from when ever...most also email you a receipt anyways .. so never lost off your email system

as to price who pays rrp. while add says rrp I expect folks to have paid less than that ? hopefully its price being sold at you are looking at and deciding worth the value  and if looking for a bargain whether a bargain for you or not ? it should not be a lesser bargain if person selling got it originally for lesser than rrp or on some sale or something ...

if not providing an invoice expect to either miss out on a sale from me if the case...

I’m with @POV on a lot of points.

I’ve claimed a few times past the written warranty period. The ACCC has made it clear that warranties should be covered for a reasonable expected period that a product should work properly given proper care and maintenance, not just an arbitrary 12 months etc.

This is why “extended warranties” are a money making ploy.

Some manufacturers require a little more persistent prodding to come to the party but you should never take a no as a no. Keep pushing. Most reputable manufacturers want to keep their good will.
As for receipts I don’t really care when buying second hand. If I want a solid warranty and recourse I will buy new.
I have even claimed from Everdure for a BBQ that I bought off marketplace that developed a known safety issue. They claimed that as I wasn’t the original owner they didn’t have to fix it, in the end they swapped it for a brand new product in the box. You just gotta know your rights and be persistent

Jeez you're a tough guy to deal with, al !! 😲

I think I've received one receipt, out of probably 50 items I've received  and never had any problems or issues .

Well maybe a couple, but were resolved fairly quickly.

Tend to deal with people who have reasonable feedback, so that is reassuring to me.

As others have stated, if I'm paying 50 - 60% off full price then don't expect a receipt.  🙂

This is a really good point, and absolutely worth considering.   A legitimate receipt/invoice certainly assists with assuring provenance for the item and provides some confidence that item has a legitimate history and was sourced legally.

thats totally your choice ... i realise if buying some items eg old relics thats been the forum bike passed through many hands  :D receipts are going to be an issue, but i am talking fairly new items and receipts should never be an issue for anyone.. if they are i want to know why..

people say about their details heck you are going to be getting item from them in the post of they are dropping off to you or going to pick up from them they are welcome to cut or even blur out or scratch out those details if they want.. have no issue with that.. but i want to see a receipt... or will have even more questions ! as to credit card details .. thats never usually full on a receipt again scratch that off it want .. dont care about that...

Each to their own, as stated previously, if you want a receipt buy it new, if your worried about it being stolen, or a grey import or faulty buy it new, especially if its out of warranty simple as that imo.

a good real example where receipts help....

an item came up.. that was a bit rare and quite an old item...looked in excellent condition and person (with one bad feedback ! ) had said they bought it 2nd hand from a retailer of high repute who had done some repairs on them... it all sounded good  given price and photos, though curious what exactly had been done to items and also wanted to verify authenticity as interstate...

the person selling gave me a copy of reciept (with their name and address blurred out) but with retailers details showing invoice number and date...this in itself corroborated parts of their story... and   I was able to ring retailer. verify they had sold said item( i didnt ask to whom and neither did they say who they had sold  to)  and they were also able to give me a full run down on the item .. that infact it had gone all way back to maker who had done the full refurb....they also confirmed item would be under their 2nd hand warranty which they would honour if i bought ...

none of above would i have been able to verify without the receipt... was worth weight in gold... especially when an item is worth thousands and interstate...

thats certainly your choice.. and it is indeed each to own. though to contradict your statement i have actually bought plenty 2nd hand with a receipt ... not worrying its stolen or grey import or that might be faulty or worrying about warranty and such ...

and on other hand sellers do also need to realise there are folks that wont buy 2nd hand with no receipt  ... worried its stolen, its a scam, or grey import or maybe faults with warranty concerns etc...

if you are indeed selling a 2nd hand item and have a receipt ..id suggest instead to do list it with a receipt 🙂 if havent got the receipt on hand ...try find it .. or get from retailer... its not often that hard and will help your sale...

Often when buying online I find  an actual "receipt" or tax invoice isn't provided, just a sales order.

This is fine for the original owner for any warranty claims but I imagine would be of limited benefit to any subsequent owner.

It does provide proof of purchase to subsequent owners to show it is not some grey market job.

Is RRP needed on the sales ad? I would presume any prospective buyer would be doing due diligence and researching anyway so it's probably redundant.

yep pretty limited benefit. insurance purposes also not much use.

last for sale i did it was required.... RRP tend ot move around so just matter of putting in what it is at the time... not that anyone always pays rrp but give some guide to pricing vs rrp.  in putting up for sales myself tend to research with what i paid, rrp(was or current) and what tend to go for 2nd hand, condition etc before pricing ....ultimately absolutely down to potential buyers  to do thier own due diligence...
