JkSpinner Posted October 15, 2024 Posted October 15, 2024 (edited) Hi all I currently have 1 old JBL SW connected to my HT Denon amp to the Sub out. I have the front speakers set to small, (only recently changed from large to small) even though they are large Paradigm Tribute speakers. So the Denon HT is handling the LFE. The front two speaker are connected via the pre outs in the AVR to my MICHI X5 2 channel amp which acts as a power amp for the HT system. I assume the Denon HT sends the same freq (not LFE) via the pre outs as it does to the speakers, as the speakers are set to small. My MICHI 2 ch amp has pre outs and sub outs. I am not sure what the cross over is if I use the Michi's Sub outs, but would assume it is around 80Hz. I have recently hooked up the Sub to the Michi to see what difference it makes to 2 channel listening. At the moment, I change the input cables between the HT Sub Out mono cable, to the Michi's pre outs when listening to music. I am looking to add a subwoofer or two for my 2 ch, however looking to see if there is a way that I could add 2 subwoofers for 2 channel that I could also use for HT movies. I cannot seem to find a Sub with input switching capabilities. If my Michi was not acting as a Power Amp for the HT, I am sure I could do this (maybe not recommended) by only turning one amp on at a time. But for HT, I have the two amps on, so the Sub would be getting the same or similar signal from both amps. I do not have a DSP device today, I am open to this in the future. Ultimately, I would like to purchase 1 or 2 x 10" or 12" subs for 2 channel, and a 12" to 15" sub for HT, so just being able to purchase two subs would be handy. This might be a journey, I may start with 1 x sub for 2ch, then 1 x larger sub for HT at a later stage, then a 2nd sub for 2 ch duties. But back to my main question, can I do this. If so, it needs to be reasonable simple. or, Do I simply have separate subs for 2 channel and HT duties Thx Edited October 15, 2024 by JkSpinner

Hi, whether your speakers are set to LARGE or SMALL in your AVR, should be mostly irrelevant in regards to the LFE channel. Setting your speakes to SMALL means that they will then be high-passed at the set frequency and the bass that is filtered off sent to the SUBWOOFER channel. So, what frequency do you have the set frequency at? Also, if you use a crossover in your AVR, you really should have the filter\crossover off or at maximum frequency on your subwoofer. I think your Rotel MICHI X5 amp has no crossover on the MONO SUB OUTS and that is what I would expect. I've had a quick look at the manual and kind find and reference to a crossover. https://www.rotel.com/sites/default/files/product/manuals/x5_om_en.pdf

One of the options is to simply plug the Sub or subs into the Michi, as the Michi is running for both movies and music. But, If set to small, then the AVR only passes high level freq through the pre outs to the Michi. If this is the case, when in AVR mode, the Michi is not receiving any bass signal. Attaching the Sub to the Michi Sub out would most likely not work, when watching movies the cross over frequency is set to 80hz on the AVR. The sub was previously on connected to the AVR. i have a switch on the sub LFE and normal LFE when connected to the AVR (uses the cross over in the AVR) Normal when connected to the Michi for 2 channel listening (uses the cross over in the Sub)
