Hi all,

I've been playing around recently, ripping some of my dvd collection to HDD,  just via freeware "Handbrake" software.

Video performance aside, from the audio track perspective, when I rip these dvd's I can select the audio track I want so I've tried ripping these various dvd's in  AC3 DD2.0 AC3 DD5.1 and DTS.

Now I've tried playing these back via USB on various devices from TV's to PC and my Oppo with varied success.

I've established that all the devices I tried won't output DTS 5.1, but if I rip a DTS dvd and convert it to E-AC3 DDplus5.1 it will play in full 5.1 DDplus sound from the Oppo via my AVR.

But the main problem I have when trying to use my Oppo, is if the dvd audio was ripped at a bitrate higher than about 768kbps then it won't play properly. It jitters and is obviously un-listenable. My TV will play these higher bit rate files fine via USB but it only outputs DD5.1, to my AVR, not DDplus5.1.

I'm assuming the Oppo may be too old to output such high transfer rates?

And the TV is not DDplus compatable.

Has anyone tried this with any success? In the end I wan't to be able to play my dvd collection without using a dvd.

Any help appreciated.

It might have to do with the codec used to transcode the rip, I think you need to use H264 instead of H265
I've recently ripped 100s of blurays and kept them in the mkv format and they have all played on my Oppo 103

Sorry, but you are wasting a lot of time and effort to make things work on the Oppo 103.  Keep the 103 to rip SACDs (which is what I do).

Much easier to get a Zidoo media player, and connect via HDMI.

which one do you have?

Had the UHD3000 and Z9X Pro.

I wouldn't have thought it was the rip as it does play on various devices but I could be wrong.

Regarding the Zidoo player, that may be the way to go.

As long as it can play via USB from a HDD, support 1080 (maybe 4k too) and all Dolby 5.1 formats (DTS will be a bonus) I'd be happy with it.

Will have to look into it.

Are there other players similar that will do the same?

Yes, a Zidoo Z9X 8K will do everything that you want. There is an active user forum.

The other brand is Dune, which you have to buy online, with no local support, no user forum.  Performance may also be affected by the chips embargo on Russian companies.

Looks like I hit another little problem. Handbrake will not allow ripping of original dvd's, Copy's work fine.

Anyone had success with ripping original dvd's?
