JESUS CHRIST!!!

Now there's a turntable!

I would see if I ground this to Phono. Both turnable and wiim ground to Phono.

The first post..........there was no turntable.

You led us on a digital bullshit trail.

Haha, now wiim ultra grounded to phono, it works well. Problem solved 😄 😄

Hi Guys,

Latest Update

: The Humming Noise is GONE when I connect the Wiim Ultra phono grounding pin to a phono or turntable !!

I have been dealing with a ground loop humming noise for a while. I tried most of the possible solutions but had no luck...

Here is my whole setup, and some results that I have found :

With Humming Noise:
- as the Diagram. It makes a humming noise once I connect the DAC and Wiim with a USB Cable / Coax cable or touch it by hand.

Without Humming Noise:

-Replace the Wiim Ultra with my iMac with a ground wire plug.

-Connect Wiim Ultra & DAC with an optical cable.

It seems like the whole system would need a ground wire on Wiim Ultra for grounding ? or some player with a ground wire plug?
As the Wiim Ultra only has 2-pin power.

Or any other method that worth a try?

Cheers.

I lost interest when the replies started to get obfuscated.. LOL

I was inspired by someone said.. ground the Wiim to other device that has grounding point. Then I took my turntable and phono out of my storage.. and it worked like a champ!!

Earth loops/hums can be incredibly difficult to pin down/eradicate - great to hear it's resolved!

Great to hear - as @almikelposted, earth loops can be difficult to eradicate.

Now - seeing as they were in storage - if you don't want your TT & phono stage cluttering up your shelf ... you can instead mains-earth the Wiim by using a length of wire (say, mains earth wire, which you can buy by the metre at Bunnings) that is attached to:

  • the Wiim earth terminal at one end
  • and the earth pin of a mains plug, at the other end.  (Then plug the mains-plug into a handy wall-socket.)

And "unloops" it would appear.. LOL

Yeah, maybe not if he isn't that fimiliar with electrical things... could be fraught wif danger..

Well it was an unearthed problem, not a loop.

I don't see how.  The Earth terminal is clearly marked on a mains plug.

But I have seen first hand what happens when non elec types play with mains voltages. Like reversing A & N in a plug (that sat me on me bum when I touched a motor to see how hot it was) or twitching together wires in a mains lead and and wrapping them in plumbers tape to insulate them. He may be quite competent, but it's not the sort of suggestions you make, just in case. And if he was competent, he would have already thought of it, or done it. Much easier just running a wire to the earthed chassis of another component.

(or you could get one of them wooden magic earthing box doohickeys LOL)

Seriously, Bob?

And:

  1. I have come across 'reversed' mains leads in a wall-socket - which was installed by a supposedly qualified electrician, and
  2. 30 years ago, when the SEC inspector - who, you would think, should know "even more" than a certified electrician - did his final approval of a house we had just built in Prahran, he 'failed' one circuit.  That was NP - and was justified - but when my electrician came around to fix the problem, he nearly electrocuted himself, as the d*ckhead inspector had left the wire going to that particular MCB ... loose in the switchbox.

Perhaps - but I would suggest it's more likely that someone wouldn't think of it.

True - if there's a convenient earth terminal on that component.  (Whilst I put one on just about anything I build ... not many commercial components have them.)

Yeah, there are incompetents in all fields, at all levels..

Someone who isn't really electrically minded probably wouldn't, which is a good reason not to suggest it.

Easy enough to use a lug under a chassis panel screw on the rear or under the componenet..

Ive had registered electricians get this wrong, flick the switch and you get a huge thud and everything goes OFF!  I  love it when they blame the wiring on the previous electrician.

Also recently had a client hand me a 3 phase plug, lucky it was transparent and i can see where the wiring goes as we need to tap one of the phases for a single phase application,  the brown wire was in the neutral pin!

Lately i dont know why, 2 different places and both have the active of the switch put on upside down.   go figure and these are all done by registered electricians
