Hi everyone.  I just purchased the new marantz cinema 50avr. I downloaded the new audussey multi eq app and i was just wondering for those who have experienced it, what should I change after calibration.  I'm not smart when it comes to graphs and I have never used REW so I don't know pretty much how my system behaves in that sense or what to look for.  Can anyone offer me some advice on what to tweak on the app after post calibration.  Thankyou.

Try turning off BBC mid-range compensation/equalisation - it's a mid-range dip switched on by default. Most people prefer it off to improve dialog audibility but YMMV.

Ok thankyou.  Will do that.  Any tips when it comes to the subwoofer section?

Audyssey often sets the sub(s) volume too low - turn up if needed. I recommend you don't change the distance setting - it's not about physical distance, it's about phase alignment.

Ok thanks bro.  I have to do all this really late at night because audussey picks up the cars on the street that drive past.  It does my head in.  Thanks for your help mate.

Congrats on your purchase of the Cinema 50, they are great machines.

I have the Cinema 40 and have been very, very happy with it. Pride and joy.

Audyssey is an excellent app. Easy to use for most of us.

Big advantages are Dynamic E.Q and dynamic volume to compensate tonally and as far as I know this is a massive advantage over Dirac. BUT, Audyssey can be very susceptible if the microphone is not set up correctly.

If you have a tripod do use it. In this way you are de-coupling the room and other vibrating objects from the microphone in order to get more accurate readings.

The Audyssey microphone that comes with your Marantz does not need to be changed for another one which you may think is better. This is because Audyssey has been programmed to understand and overcome the shortcomings of this particular type of microphone.

Depending on how invested you are in this hobby, I recommend to spend in a good camera tripod. Don't go for a mic boom (although this is a good alternative to de-couple the mic from say, your couch, but it is not precise). I tried one and that did not work for me, it has too much movement when you set up the microphone in a different position and tighten the screws again.

I can recommend the tripod below. It is exceptional and it has measurements on it, so you can do a calibration within 10cm points in space if you like. I have not found anything else like it.

K&F Concept Camera Tripod

But you can use any camera tripod too and move it around, this will always be better than using a hard surface to hold it or worse, your own hand.

Very good point about noises too. The last calibration I did was at 3am with nobody around and it has been the best one I have done. No barking dogs, no aero planes, no birds, no cars passing by etc. If you can do this, it is highly recommended. The other best time to do it is Sunday early morning, before the birds come out!

With calibration it is not about doing it once and forget. The best results you will get are when you do different patterns, listen and then re-calibrate. You will get better at it.

The app allows you to save multiple calibrations and then load them up to your Marantz, so you can try different patterns in one calibration session.

And finally, DO NOT just follow the pattern on the screen, this does not make sense as some of the positions are on your feet. So unless you are going to put your head down there for a strange reason, then it does not make sense.

Make sure that there are no objects in between the microphone and your speakers. For example someone in between etc.

You can do for example a tight calibration of positions around your head. Use ALL of the 8 positions ALWAYS. The more data you give Audyssey to do the maths, the better the result. Some of the positions do in varying height too.

Start with one calibration which assumes you are the only one in the room on the main listening position, so do the 8 positions around your head. You can do this tightly, say within 10-20cm of each other.

Then have a second calibration, a much wider one, for example when you have another two people sitting to your left and right. For instance 50cm to the right from the main position and 50cm to the left of the main position. Once again use all of the 8 positions.

Good luck and have fun!

Thanks my friend for this response.  By far the marantz has been the best avr I've owned.  I know with calibration I'm just gonna need some patience.   I'll take on board your advice. Thankyou. I got this avr really more for calibrating the subs.  So besides turning off midrange compensation in the app,  is there anything else i should do post calibration?

One important thing to change is the crossover results for all speakers (not sub). There are many reasons for this and probably those videos will explain why.

I have speakers that go low, my three front ones in particular are PMC and can go to probably 40HZ, but even so, set all speakers to 80HZ or above so that your subs manage everything below this.

Once again, there are multiple reasons why this should be done.

This is the reading that I got and which I changed to 80HZ for ALL speakers. You would notice that Audyssey is doing a proper reading of what the speakers can do, but that doesn't mean that it is appropriate or ideal and must be changed.

Thankyou,  yeah I understand crossovers now and what gets sent to the speakers and sub. Still haven't done the app calibration yet,  been falling asleep to early.  I'm going to stay up late this weekend and start it.  I'll post the graphs results when I'm done and maybe you can tell me if I need to adjust curves and stuff like that.  I appreciate your help.

So i ran audussey through the app and the room was really quiet.  But I got to say i preferred the sound especially the bass when I first ran audussey just through the av. The bass just isn't there anymore.  And I'm pretty sure this new calibration has overridden the one i preferred. Man I'm so depressed.  This whole thing sucks.  I did manage to take a screen shot of all the settings just before the calibration.  If i put all those settings back will I get back pretty much of the sound i liked before? Please help.

Also when i ran audussey the first time using 3 subs,  the sub mode was standard.  But i ran 2 subs this time using the app and the mode changed to directional. When i tried to add the third sub in again manually,  audussey is completely not in use anymore.  What's going on.

Remember that it is not a matter of set once an forget but re-run the calibration until you are happy with the results.

You can re-load the previous file from the Audyssey app back into the AVR as much as you like, you can save in the app multiple calibration files, then tweak them and then load them up. You have also the ability to save to Preset 1 and Preset 2. Once the two are uploaded you can swap from one to the other in the AVR.

However, If the problem is only with the subs, I can't comment on multiple subs as I don't have experience in this area and only use one sub.

Just curious,  the reason why I've lost the original calibration is because it was done through the avr. So once I do the calibration through the app,  I then have to work from there.  It's that correct?

Apologies for the delay in replying, couldn't get around it with the heat here in Melbourne.

Probably by now you already worked it out, but just in case.

Yes I think you may have replaced whatever was in the AVR when you uploaded a new calibration. Whatever was there would be gone.

What you do is turn on the AVR. Assuming you already configured the Ethernet/Wi-Fi connection in the AVR/phone, then simply open up the app and do everything from this point in the app.

Every time you complete a calibration this one is saved in the app in your phone. Now all you have to do is tweak which ever you want, then upload it to the AVR. You didn't like this one? Then you simply upload another one. All of them from your phone.

See below, these are the ones I have done over the last few months. Once you do one calibration, click edit and this will allow you to make a copy of this file. Then you go into that copy and adjust to your taste. Then upload it to the AVR and check the result etc.

Notice that I have made a few copies of the 3am pattern. The last one I did has the Audyssey EQ one etc.

Thanks for your help,  I will do more calibrations. Also with dynamic volume,  which setting makes the bass seem softer,  is it light or medium.?  I like soft sounding bass,  no tubbiness .
