Quint Posted February 1 Posted February 1 Hi Everyone, I received yesterday a hegel v10 to replace my chord huei. After researching the settings an to my believe installed them correctly , I seem to experience a hum that no matter what settings I go do not get rid off. Connected to a Technics 1500c with ortofons quintet bue mc catridge. The v10 is not directly on top of any other device. Cabling is Audioquest Rca’s power in to niagara powerfilter and into Hegel H390. Please help, chord or any of my other phono stages ( mofi, chord) do not hum. any experiences here? Earth also properly I believe. Thank you, Quint

I doubt very much that it is a setting causing the hum. It will probably be because the new preamp handles the signal grounding differently. You usually have to play around with how the turntable is grounded to the preamp, and how the preamp is grounded to the main amp, and all combinations of the above, including no grounding at all. 6 minutes ago, Quint said: Earth also properly I believe. There is no proper way to earth it. It will change depending on the equipment being interconnected. 1

The easiest thing to do is to connect a cable to your tonearm in some fashion (on the base or any metal part really) and then, one-by-one, attempt to ground it to other parts of your system. [in my setup I not only have my turntable grouunded to my phono pre, but I have a seperate grounding cable from my turntable chasis (metal) to my amplifier -> this reduced hum to zero] 1
MikeF_PT Posted February 3 Posted February 3 is the turntable also connected to the Niagara? if not, connect it. Or try to connect both turntable and phonostage to other power outlets. You can also try to connect a power block to an outlet, and connect both turntable and phonostage to the power block, to ensure both earths are the same and no earth loops form.
Quint Posted February 11 Author Posted February 11 (edited) Thank you guys for the help and suggestion, I have been able to reduce the hum noise floor to a very minimum due to all of your valuable feedback, however returned the Hegel v10 because of the disappointing sound in my setup. I now run a Primare r35 which is really beautiful in my system and has no hum anymore. Much appreciated and musical regards. Edited February 11 by Quint 4
