PauliD Posted March 3 Posted March 3 Hey everyone, I thought I’d reach out to the experienced people here about an issue I have just started experiencing. When my sub JL Audio e112, has been on for a while I get a big ‘boom’ at random. Just the one time, but will do it again once out of stand by. It still sounds ok and I have change power cables and power point on a different circuit but still happens. I made my jump the first time it happened! The sub is second hand, but I had the full amp plate replaced last September by Advanced Audio after the previous one just went quiet and the volume pot was unresponsive. Here I was thinking in replacing it that it’d smooth sailing. Do I have a lemon or is there something I can do? It goes in and out of standby no problem with no hum or whatever. Any tips or things to try? Thanks!
PauliD Posted March 4 Author Posted March 4 Any advice is the amp goes go, turning it into a passive sub and get an external power amp?

Not sure what warranty you have on the replaced plate amp, but keep it in mind, keep using the sub and if it gets worse or keeps playing up, then take it back to place that replace the plate amp for testing or replacement before warrant runs out? A quick google and the adjustable pot can play up a bit in some of these models. Turn the level up and down a few times and put it back to where you had it to see if it helps at all or even if it makes it worse. I am just guessing here but might be worth a try. PauliD Posted March 4 Author Posted March 4 Thanks Rocky, I'll have a play with the volume dial. It definitely still works (the previous amp plate it didn't work). As for warranty, it was only 90 days so long gone unfortunately. Could the driver be killing the amp plates? They gave me back the old one when the new one was replaced and it had 'caps replaced' written on the metal housing. So could be on the 3rd amp.
Quark Posted March 4 Posted March 4 If using an RCA cable to the sub, it may be picking interference from an appliance/device turning on/off. 1
PauliD Posted March 4 Author Posted March 4 Thanks Quark. Good idea to test. I’ll pull it out and try another cable tomorrow. Would love it to be that simple, but it’s been in the same spot for over a year. 1
PauliD Posted March 6 Author Posted March 6 I'm almost embarrassed to say, that I think it was as simple as the cable. It's been good for a day and half. Fingers crossed it doesn't come back. Start with the simple tests before over reacting. That's for the help. 3
PauliD Posted March 10 Author Posted March 10 So it is back. Unfortunately doesn’t look to be so simple. I’ll call the repair place tomorrow. $110 just to look at it tho

The problem with random, intermittent faults though is that it may take a considerable amount of time to find the problem.
