Hi everyone,

Does anyone know what would be the price of a immaculate condition very well restored/refurbished fully functional GERARD 401 turntable with two brand new cartridges 1: An 0roton for 33 and 45 rpm vinyls and another one for 78 rpm (brand unknown)? I am new in this field and would mainly listen highy quality Indian vinyls and around 200 of 78 rpm shellac records. A guy in India is asking AU$ 8500 and is non negotiable. I think this is unreasonably high price and was thinking to buy a brand new Technics 1200GR2BS which is Au$ 3300. All suggestions welcome.

Price drop at Addicted to Audio on the 1200gr2 now down to 2800aus ... march sale? so many sales, more likely not selling as fast as they had hoped but that is just a guess.

edit; it has dropped pretty much everywhere.

Welcome to SNA Amer.  The Garrard 401 is a wonderful turntable, and with two arms would be excellent for microgroove and 78's.

There are many variables that will influence the price.

Have a search of the SNA turntable classifieds to see what 401's have sold for in Australia,  you could also search eBay (but look at the sold prices, not what's being advertised).  The price will depend on the condition of the turntable, the quality of the plinth, arm and cartridge, if documentation is incldued, etc. Iit is unusual to have turntables sold with two arms, but you will start to get an idea of the values.  Ortofon cartridges range from entry level to the very best, and this will also influence the cost.  When buying factor in replacement styli (unless the seller can prove the styli are good quality).

The guy is supplying only two cartridges not two tonearms for this Gerard 401.

Do you I should buy it for that price?

I would say don't buy at that price. Would need to know what make and model cartridges and make and model of tonearm. Pictures would be a big help for us too.

For $8500, you could get a Clearaudio Performance DC Wood with Clarify tonearm and a $1000 left over for a great cartridge or two. It will outperform any Garrard or Technics TT (apart from the $30k model).
