bingo Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 Hi All, I have bought some ceiling speakers to add to my 2-ch system and I would really appreciate some thoughts on placement *before* I start cutting holes in the gyprock... My main room is ~6 x 5 m with the 2 floorstanders on 1 wall.. on the opposite wall are 2 sliding doors that open up (2m wide) to the dining room/kitchen. The start of the kitchen is where I was thinking of installing the ceiling speakers which is ~ 12m straight line from the rear wall of the music room (via the 2m wide doorway). The whole idea is to be able to listen to music while in the kitchen without having the volume blasting at the main speakers. I was thinking of having them just outside the kitchen work bench - a long way from the sink and a bit from the cooktop.. Oh yeah, the speakers are Sonance 421MR's. Anyone have any tips or gotchas for positioning them ? Am I wasting my time ?
Keith_W Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 The whole idea of positioning speakers is to get the best soundstaging and imaging possible. Given that you seem to be describing speakers for ambient music (and not surround speakers in a 5.1 or 7.1 setup for example), placement is not so critical. So put them wherever you want.
waricle Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 What type of amp will you be using? Will you want to listen to your main system at the same time? Will you want to use the rear speakers when listening to the fronts? The reason I asked these questions is that there will be a distance lag in one position or the other. If they are set up as "A" or "B" or if the main listening position is equal distance from the 4 speakers then time lag shouldn't be a problem.(in the main position) Another method is a separate receiver for the rears from the same source and adjust the time delay to suit. You will have a time delay problem to deal with in any case.
anthonyc Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 Maybe you need a seperate volume control. I find that even with my mains turned down, the inceiling speakers (usually pretty efficient) are way to loud for imbedience listening volumes.
Gee Emm Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 Have you thought about putting them in walls instead?
Nolz Posted April 30, 2008 Posted April 30, 2008 I've run a zone 2 from my receivers for a pair of in ceilings for my kitchen/dining. They work a treat and can be quite catchy when cranked up, providing good sound for both ambiance and getting in some good tunes. Where you have planned to put them sounds good to me.
bingo Posted April 30, 2008 Author Posted April 30, 2008 Thanks for your thoughts guys, I have attached a rough plan of what I am thinking of atm.. a pic is worth 1000 words after all.. Some responses.. 1. They will be running as B speakers of a Denon PMA1500 (courtesy of Dave Chickenism) My plan atm was to note where the cables run so that if necessary I can put a Jaycar vol control for them if there is too much volume imbalance. Any serious listening will be done with the mains only. 2. Lag is not something that I had considered...something I will have to live with & hopefully insignificant given its 'background music' role. 3. No I haven't thought of the walls...it would actually be easier for me to put them in the walls as well... Why do you suggest that ? cheers
