Hi all,

I have a Pro-ject Project The Classic turntable and wanted to know about the best upgrades and mods.
Looking at doing the sub platter to bring it to the evo spec. But what else can I add? Are any of the tonearms worth it for this turntable? What about a thicker plinth? (does anyone in oz make them)

New to the modding/upgrading of turn tables. So any input would be great

Thanks

May I enquire as to what cart you are using on the TT?

Depending on what level of improvement you are seeking a cart upgrade may be a better way forward.

I'm using the Ortofon Quintet MC bronze with the Gold Note PH-10 phono stage

Agreed the cart may offer a better starting point.  The classic whilst a good table is not one i would pour a lot of $$ into with upgrades.  I have done work on one and also traded one in a few years ago,  so am familiar with the model.

If you still have the Ortofon on it then cart would be my first change.  Audio Technica work well,  the VM95ML is a bargain starting point for a fantastic microline stylus,  VM740ML is not a lot more and steps things up.

Should I sell it and get a better turntable? While I don't play a lot of vinyl, when I do I'd like it to sound natural and warm. I have a lot of Mofi records and the like and less than 5 "bought from JB" types. A lot of originals and so on.

I love the look of players with the thick platters 🙂

Well I wouldn't rush into it 🙂  but its worth looking at other TT options vs spending a lot on the Classic.

The power supply is quite basic on it, but being 15vdc there are plenty of options to add a high quality regulated linear DC supply. Budget $150-200 depending where you source it or $300 up for something built locally.

The sub platter is an improvement and not too costly at $200 odd bucks.

The EVO has more than just the subplatter though, arm has been upgraded, and some other small things I dont recall, the leather mat and puck were removed to keep the pricing the same as the original.

I dont think its worth investing in the chassis, at this stage I would be looking at upgrading the table.

I wouldnt look at changing the arm either, even though an Origin Live would likely step up the performance noticeably, being only 9" design limits the use of the arm on another table down the track, OL tables are all 9.5" based as are many others (Rega geometry).

You can add accessories that will improve the performance, and are transferable to any table, things like the Origin Live GRAVITY ONE record puck and the Performance mat, or even the STRATA mat (a bit expensive but works on pretty much any table) are excellent upgrades to any table and are items you keep regardless you sell the table or not.

Thanks for that. What turntable would you recommend upto $1500 odd before mods?

First of all, don't buy a Rega.

Second is that for $1500 you probably won't find a replacement that is notably better so I would just go for a linear power supply and a new ( better ) cart. I may be slightly biased ( but with very good reason ) and I would suggest this.

I have had one for about two years now and it is really superb and should bring your Classic to life in conjunction with a decent LPS.
