Herbie Hancock, "River, 'The Joni Letter's'" brilliant........................................!!!!!

So I've heard. I must get that one.

Tonight I plugged in a Nordost flatline IC Jake sent me. Testing out different ICs on the SA11 to temper some brightness with SACD

I just love this SACD disc - I even put up with the brightness to hear it (well its only bright when Miles goes big time on the trumpet and the volume is UP)

I've already mentioned this recording before, but its worth mentioning again.

Hi Scuzzii,

I'm currently using ic200s between pre and powers. I have noticed similar - sound is leaning towards the brighter part of neutral. Not significantly, and all in all detail has improved. However would appreciate it if you could share/update on your findings with trying out the nordost, and others (which ones improved in what way and effect on brightness etc...) Ditto with the speaker cables, how did you find the ss1000D's? I'm thinking of changing my speaker cables for smoother ones to re-balance. My preference is for sound to be on the smoother end of neutral...

Hi

Maybe we should just have one big cable thread instead of all these separate ones (with occasional interruptions to talk about other bits of equipment and the music that we listen to via them)

Cheers

Now, now Mick, where would be the fun in that

I just received Brubecks Time Out on supposedly marvellous new 200gm vinyl - very disappointed with the amount of surface noise on this disc.

Also received Diana Krall, The Girl in the Other Room (double LP), also new, in comparison this is brilliant, virtually silent as also is the Speakers Corner pressing of Lady sings the Blues - Billie Holiday.

I suppose 2 out of 3 ain't bad.

Scuzzi, have you considered that your brightness problem (if as you say, it is only at elevated volume) might actually be a room interaction?

Mick,

I guess I was just putting the listening sessions in context... Some of these discs I've mentioned before so I was explaining myself. Apologies - there will be no more "cross topic" talk from my end ...

hi scuzzii

No need to apologise (especially to me) - your posts were all completely in the context of the music you were playing.

cheers

I've said this on SNA at least twice before, but I think I can say it again in present company. If you don't got this, get it! Art Blakey and The Jazz Messengers- Free For All (Blue Note 2004 CD remaster). I never lose my awe of this. It's so spontaneous it's hard to believe it's a studio date. Turn it up!! But keep a fire extinguisher nearby. Fiery playing by Shorter, Hubbard, Fuller, etc. with Blakey all up their backside!

I've had a female jazz singer morning and I played:

Patricia Barber:- Cafe Blue

HDCD version of a 1994 album. I just looooove the first track and the recording quality is excellent

Ella Fitzgerald & Joe Pass:- Take Love Easy

XRCD so again well recorded, I have a few albums of this pairing and like them all.

Holly Cole:- Temptation

Tom Waits songs, very nice indeed

Melody Gardot:- Worrisome Heart

A new artist worth listening to.

Raptor,

I've picked up 2 of your recommendations.

4hecks sent me a SACD copy of Patrica Barber- cafe blue .

The SQ is simply excellent. A real nice mix of music and intrumentals. I was doing a double look at some of the sounds coming out of my speakers - a truly worthwhile purchse ($18 for SACD...!!). I should highlight, I played this SACD in my Raysonic, so what I was listening too was just the redbook layer.. So don't be put off thinking the redbook version won't sound great..

And Melody Gardot - worrisome heart. yet to play that one..

Tomasz Stanko Quartet - Lontano (ECM Records)

Anyone else in to the stuff that comes out on ECM?

Yep, I've got quite a few. Tomasz Stanko, Jan Garbarek, Susanne Abbuehl, Lera Auerbach, Anouar Brahem, Bill Frisell, Tord Gustavsen, Keith Jarrett, Dino Saluzzi are names that come to mind.

You might also want to consider artists on the MaxJazz Label, their stuff is also well recorded.

As do Ralph Towner, Eberhard Weber, John Abercrombie, Dave Holland, Pelle Danielson, Jon Christiansen, Chick Corea - the list goes on .....

ECM is justly famous for their (minimalist) recording techniques and therefore for the excellent quality of their recordings. A lot of the music ain't bad either.

Yes indeed.....I I really like Tomasz Stanko too. Seems others are equally familiar with the label, but with the ever growing list of recordings people will have their favs. Oh & some of the classical titles are excellent, so they are far from only jazz these days.

I picked up 3 Art Blakey CDs over the weekend

- les liaison dangerous (presumably this is the 1960 soundtrack)

- cafe bohemia vol 1

- like someone in love

I played les liaison dangerous through the day. Whilst not all songs were to my initial liking, I couldn't help but tap my foot to most of it as I was sitting on the computer looking up IC and speaker cable info.

This guy had some great rhythm. SQ was pretty good as well.

I can't seem to find a Album cover (or anything on the soundtrack) to include.

My discovery of Art Blakey has begun.. Thanks for the suggestions.

I need to stop going to JB HiFi though, all I hear are these voices saying "I'm cheap, buy me.." Walked out with about 10 CDs..

Following on from the ECM recommendations; I'm a big fan of this album

Manu Katche - Neighbourhood

All star line up. Plus Manu has such wonderful sounds on the kit. You've probably heard him behind people like Sting and Peter Gabriel as well.

Hi scuzzii

Some of Blakey's best work IMO is on other people's records - especially the Blue Note ones of Lee Morgan - Lee-Way and Tomcat and also Sonny Rollins volume II - his playing on Misterioso on the latter (which has the bonus of Horace Silver and Monk playing on the same track) is superb - the accord he reaches with JJ Johnson during the trombone solo is really spooky.

Just to help your wallet out a bit icon12.gif.

In a reference in another thread provided by terryj, the website soundstage.com has a list of recordings their reviewers use when assessing equipment. Art Blakey is in that list by way of the CD "Bluesiana". I currently have this on order from an Amazon "seller".

Thanks Mick, my wallet gets very nervous when it hears the computer turn on these days..

I saw some Sonny Rollins at JB but had NFI what ones to grab. For some reason, my JB doesn't have a lot of the blue note cheap CDs everyone has been talking about.. (another reason my wallet is as happy as the NSW Electricty workers union).

I think I should check who is on the skins of artists I pick up. If I see Blakey, I'll take it. Will research Lee Morgan a bit.

Have just looked up the soundstage.com website.. I've sent it to my home email so I can spend some time looking through it. Thanks.
