PJ64000 Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 I was at the home of one of my daughter's friends for a BBQ. There were some large speaker cabinets with some nice sounds coming out of them. They were playing music from an iPad connected to an unknown (to me) valve amp. It turned out they were Tannoy's that came from his Grandfather's house. They found the drivers, still in boxes, after his grandfather died. He built the cabinets and was driving them with a cheap Chinese valve amp. The sound was amazing. 6
cheekyboy Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 (edited) Were they Tannoy Golds, PJ64000? I use 12" Tannoy Reds in a third system and these enclosures are close to 200 lts...................a very sweet sound indeed. Cheers, Keith Edited April 4, 2014 by cheekyboy

I can relate to the op's story - yesterday I set up a pair of advent two ways for a friend. Boyd from total recoil had totally rebuilt them for beer money. Placed on decent stands fed by a SanDisk music box into a basic pioneer amp in a carpeted room I found myself thinking about the dough I've spent on my gear Totally simple, totally cheap, sounded really great, better than it should have I thought But then I came home, spun Ella on the good gear... cheekyboy Posted April 4, 2014 Posted April 4, 2014 Yeah, blackangus, the Tannoys here are too good to leave not hooked up, that's why I've set them up as a third system in the back part of the house and they do get a fair bit of use there. The last pair of Tannoy Reds were made in 1967 and you're right, it does make you think hard about and question just how far hi fi loudspeakers have come in the last 40 - 50 years! Cheers, Keith
roh008 Posted May 9, 2014 Posted May 9, 2014 My dad has a set of these, not sure if they are 10/12inch though. Trying to work out how best to get them across from London though. Great for acoustic and classical, not too sure about Rock or pop electronic etc. http://www.hilberink.nl/tannoy/edmallows/tannoylanc1a.jpg
Phred Posted May 24, 2014 Posted May 24, 2014 Big Tannoys can rock Give them plenty of SS power and they are very fast and accurate. Within reason the more you feed them the better they sound. They image well and are well able to provide the crack and excitement that a well recorded rock band can provide. Above all they will just sound natural. If its all soft and a bit woolly is your thing, decent valve amps work fine

Not sure how much power they can handle. They aren't the 15 inch cones.
