Full Range Posted May 15, 2014 Author Posted May 15, 2014 (edited) I remember that I promised earlier and I quote I have had an offer from a fellow SNAer - thanks @green-wagon to build the crossovers for me for a small cost and the promise of getting that " weak in the knees feeling when he has a listen on the system when it's all connected up I was happy to oblige with coffee & music @greenwagon and you are very welcome Surprisingly when you arrived you said woo an Irish Terrier & would be the only person that got it right - they are certainly a great dog. The IT breed has been part of our family for about 30 years Compliments to you as the crossover build was to my requirements and worth every penny spent on them As you noted - the fine tweak stage has started and when finished, I would die happy knowing that I have lived with a system that when turned on Audio Nirvana fills all my senses See you back soon Edited May 15, 2014 by Full Range
davewantsmoore Posted May 17, 2014 Posted May 17, 2014 Inductors may interact with each other in this orientation.
Green Wagon Posted May 17, 2014 Posted May 17, 2014 Its good to see someone that actually pays attention and cares about such things. But any interaction should be minimal. the closest ones are ~12cm apart, and thats between the small mid and tweeter ones. These are going to be 'upgraded' to ones that should have less interaction than the current ones. what you can't really see from the pics is just how BIG these are. The plate is ~50 centimeters long, from terminals to the large inductor end. That black duelund resistor is 13cm long The large inductors are (from memory) 18cm apart. But if you really want to worry, those red caps have a aluminum 'shell' that if placed in the wrong spot also create issues. And then theres the attenuator transformers to consider with there iron cores. it was all carefully considered i assure you. yes there will probably be a little interaction, but i suspect it'll be so small as to be of no real consequence. After hearing and seeing the 'professionally' made original units, i can vouch for the news ones superiority... Maybe FR will put up pics of the ones he was using before these. 1
Full Range Posted May 17, 2014 Author Posted May 17, 2014 The original crossovers that came with the speakers were ALK universal These we're going to be stripped to salvage parts to make the new crossovers In the interim I used the ALK Gentle Slope Crossovers ( a two piece system ) The ALK universal crossover parts extra parts purchased and coils were combined to make the new crossovers The inductor coils are over 1.5 kg each
henry218 Posted May 17, 2014 Posted May 17, 2014 FR, if you want to sell those jantzen super caps let me know and the litz inductor too if its the right values cheers Henry
Full Range Posted May 17, 2014 Author Posted May 17, 2014 FR, if you want to sell those jantzen super caps let me know and the litz inductor too if its the right values cheers Henry I was going to make a list and place them for sale However I can PM you the list Henry to see if the items match the values you need

mwhouston Posted May 17, 2014 Posted May 17, 2014 Full Range: magnificant build. Good work. Any idea of the effeciency? I have a few 2.5W and 6W SETs that would love to meet your speakers.
davewantsmoore Posted May 17, 2014 Posted May 17, 2014 But any interaction should be minimal. If the circuit has been designed with the inductance of the components in their actual location.... then there is no problem.

Full Range Posted May 21, 2014 Author Posted May 21, 2014 (edited) I have been testing the crossovers - giving them plenty of burn in time, and have found them so agreeable that it takes my wife a crowbar to get me to get up to eat Sound is beautiful at this crossover point @ 500htz for this setup combination Myself and @greenwagon - the builder of the crossovers, have given a score of 9 out of 10 on both tone and music tracks Over the next month I will tweak the crossover minimally to get the very best out of the crossovers and the speakers We will be replacing or changing over some resistors and coils to enhance the sonic signatures of the individual drivers I feel and hope that these tweak additions to the crossovers will take the La Scalas to another level and then I will sit and enjoy the music forever more ( famous last words ) Changes planed are 1) Pathaudio earthed Resistors to the tweeter section 2) Mills Resistors to the tweeter PCB 3) Duelund standard Resistor 4) Jentzen flat wax Inductor Coils to service the mid and tweeter sections Just taken a short video ( hope it does the system justice ) Frames on the crossover boards have not been completed yet Edited May 21, 2014 by Full Range 4
Green Wagon Posted May 21, 2014 Posted May 21, 2014 I'm not sure how much more can be squeezed out of your system. Its at a level that is above mortal realms. Therein lies the problem. After having just finished new larger cabinets for dads jbl's, I'm now at the point of looking at capacitor, inductor, resistor upgrades for his xovers. Unless I do a whole new xover to start with. I blame FR for this. *shakes fist angrily* 1

Green Wagon Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 He really does like your speakers. In many ways they are almost brothers. both have 15", horn mid, loaded tweeter, high sensitivity. i think with the jbls new home, there fairly close to yours. swapping out caps, coils, resistors, i think will make the difference closer still. Will be interesting to see what your thoughts on them are. 1
Guest atilsley Posted May 22, 2014 Posted May 22, 2014 Here's an interesting weston electric horn on top of a la scala bass cab...,pretty cool.
Full Range Posted May 23, 2014 Author Posted May 23, 2014 Here's an interesting weston electric horn on top of a la scala bass cab...,pretty cool. On that note- Why do we have a love affaire with horns Here is a BBC story and video on the Denman Horn - http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-27483035 Now that's a horn that is big in size and still produces superb sound
Green Wagon Posted May 23, 2014 Posted May 23, 2014 Um, dont all men have a love affair with their porn horn ?
Full Range Posted May 28, 2014 Author Posted May 28, 2014 (edited) Update While Im waiting for the new resistors to arrive I have kept myself busy by making new hookup wire looms to connect the three speakers to the crossover Wire used is Kimber 8TC ( 16 strand - 8 strands each for positive and negative ) Tinned ends with Silver / Gold solder Heat shrink black / red for visual ID Then added pure copper gold plated rings and soldered again. These rings have made a very secure connection on the speaker & crossover terminals, with no likelihood of any looseness causing bad connection if the future Name labels for identification Very satisfied with my handy work so far Some photos Edited May 28, 2014 by Full Range 1

Full Range Posted May 28, 2014 Author Posted May 28, 2014 i guess the next upgrade is CMC copper binding post Next is the box frame on the crossovers and the resistors And that will be it - I will be finished The La Scalas are sounding so nice now that it's hard to leave the sound room for fear of missing out I get music fix withdrawal symptoms 1
Malcolm Posted May 28, 2014 Posted May 28, 2014 i guess the next upgrade is CMC copper binding post Get rid of the connectors and hard wire . Cheers

Full Range Posted May 28, 2014 Author Posted May 28, 2014 Get rid of the connectors and hard wire . Cheers thats my MO I would have hardwired if the crossovers were internal Furthermore all the internal connections are hardwired from driver to connector But what I have devised is next best thing for a secure and solid connection to the external crossover Cheers
