betty boop Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Paris Texas - US Release - 5.1 DTS Master Audio Movie - 4.5/5 - A classic I know, but not a movie have somehow come around to watching over the years. When noticed it had been released on blu-ray thought should grab a copy to see what it was all about. Am pleasantly surprised ! A movie both wife and me enjoyed watching ... twice. Yes we ended up watching it twice ! The movie has this feel to it, capturing the isolation and desolate nature of Texas, plus the the captivating story of a man that walks out of a dessert after 4 years trying to unravel his past. Its just so human, naturally acted couldnt help being caught up in the story from start to finish. PQ - 3/5 - The transfer to blu-ray doesnt do this any favours. It is beautifully shot, and though with rich vibrant colours, still quite blurry and covered grain in most scenes. A real pity, am sure one day it will get restored as it is the only part that lets the movie down a little.AQ - 4.5/5 - All the way through the movie is the beautiful Ry Cooder guitar sound track. Its used to lovely effect eg in the narative sections, or support the mood of the movie. The movie is perhaps just as well known for its sound track as for any other reason and sounds absolutely splendid all the way to the finish with the titles rolling screen Overall - 4.5/5 - a true classic...I could see it again ! taken a few screen shots from the movie as an indication of the picture quality of this blu-ray release.. 1
Pasgod Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 I watched it few years ago, and I liked it very much, not surprised you watched it twice. Some very moving scenes in this film, and the emotion is accentuated by Ry Cooder 's unforgettable music. Wim Wenders received the Palme d'Or at the Festival de Cannes in 1984 for this movie, which is the most important award in this festival.
Luc Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Harry Dean S's breakthrough movie. Wenders dined out on the excellence of this for years.
Orpheus Posted April 14, 2014 Posted April 14, 2014 Yes, it's an excellent film. Great performances, including from the boy, but most obviously from HDS. Great, brooding, lyrical, expansive film,,enhanced by Ry Cooder's bleak, slide guitar. Poetry in film.
A9X Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 I bought this ages ago on DVD as part of a large collection and haven't watch it yet. I'll add it to the list for this week. 1
Guest Misterioso Posted May 3, 2014 Posted May 3, 2014 We can't have a thread about Paris Texas without mentioning the wonderful Nastassja Kinski. Done.
betty boop Posted May 3, 2014 Author Posted May 3, 2014 I bought this ages ago on DVD as part of a large collection and haven't watch it yet. I'll add it to the list for this week. I was similar in that way, quite some time went by with the blu-ray just sitting in the shelf before I got around to watching. Look forward to your thoughts...
Monk Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 It's funny, it's another movie that I either haven't seen, or bought the soundtrack to before I saw/bought the film. Love the soundtrack, will eventually get around to watching the film I guess. 1
ehtcom Posted May 4, 2014 Posted May 4, 2014 Listened to the soundtrack (again) last week. Love it. Am yet to see the movie. 2

betty boop Posted February 10 Author Posted February 10 and ten year later ! Yes ! Paris Texas, been about a decade since last checked this out. this time around on 4k uhd blu-ray and it's been carefully restored and remastered... I have the criterion release of this which comes with a nice book of notes and photos... like the movie that was a french german collaboration.. the restoration has been as well.. and quite the better for it... this is a movie from 1984 ! so some 40 years later... it comes up very well , some screen shots below so can see what looks like.... 1
betty boop Posted February 10 Author Posted February 10 I cant edit the original post and looks like original screen shots from the 2014 blu-ray version have dropped off.. re adding them here so folks can see how 4k uhd release compares to original blu-ray version.. its interesting i made the comment above 10 years ago... well that restoration has come through 10 years later and its no longer quite blurry or covered in grain in most scenes..... "The transfer to blu-ray doesnt do this any favours. It is beautifully shot, and though with rich vibrant colours, still quite blurry and covered grain in most scenes. A real pity, am sure one day it will get restored as it is the only part that lets the movie down a little." the 2014 version from blu-ray.. note i did run a differnt projector back then ... it would have been the x35... the current captures above are from latest jvc nz800 so no doubt that is of benefit as well in better projector tech..
