psychometrics1 Posted March 17, 2019 Posted March 17, 2019 The chap alluded to is indeed still grateful to Rockeater for introducing EC to him! Shame my WA friend didn't keep his EC UP CD player too. 1
H.E. Pennypacker Posted March 17, 2019 Posted March 17, 2019 For the first time in my life I'm about to move to an EC set up. I took a punt on an AW100DMB from a member here (though I bought it via ebay) and loved it. I've finally found a second hand ec 4.7 and I'm awaiting it's repair before it's shipped. I'm looking forward to my continued shift. I don't think EC is better than Krell, but it sure is different.

nicksyl1 Posted November 7, 2019 Posted November 7, 2019 (edited) Hi to all Electrocompaniet owners. I have lived with my EC4.7 and AW120DMB amplifiers for a while now have come to realise that the opinion that Electrocompaniet has tube like sound may very well be true, which is a pity as my B&W DM6 speakers are more suited to solid state amplification. Following on from this I am asking for advice regarding speakers to complement the EC signature sound. I prefer a lively sound and well reproduced vocals. If anyone has an opinion, I would be most interested. Thanks. Edited November 11, 2019 by nicksyl1

Extremely engaging sound and looks. Check them out if you can.
MVJ Posted November 7, 2019 Posted November 7, 2019 I have had an ECI3 for a long time. It is a lovely amp and replaced a Naim 72, Hicap, 140 set up. The only other amp I heard in comparison recently was an Arcam of a similar standard. I still preferred the EC, as did the retailer at the time. A friend had the EC 1UP and that was a really impressive CD player. Their gear is rare in the used market. Maybe they just have happy owners. 1
s7e6e Posted November 8, 2019 Posted November 8, 2019 (edited) Having heard Electrocompaniet (class A) multiple times couldn't help but notice the same sound signature as the Accuphase brand. Tube like velvety notes but with the slam of solid states. They are heavy, hot and have a massive amperage draw but the stories they tell once you press play..... Edited November 13, 2019 by s7e6e 1

They even make a turntable which I was unaware of until a couple of days ago. A review from the Absolute Sound. http://www.theabsolutesound.com/articles/electrocompaniet-ecg-1-turntable-and-arm/ 2
MVJ Posted November 8, 2019 Posted November 8, 2019 There is at least one dealer in Aus. The Audio Tailor in Murrarrie, Brisbane.

psychometrics1 Posted November 25, 2019 Posted November 25, 2019 Yes, Tivioli are the EC distributors and very helpful to boot. Just bought a new EC ECP 2 phono stage from them which is the best of many phono stages I have tried. Running EC 4.8 pre (hence 4.5 for sale), AW180M mono blocks and EMC UP CD player - all balanced. Really happy, albeit I have a second vintage Metaxas based system alongside that I like equally. 1
Guest jakeyb77 Posted December 9, 2019 Posted December 9, 2019 Had my first and last foray into EC gear a couple of weeks ago and have to say I couldn’t have been more underwhelmed. A/B testing with other preamps such as the Bel Canto Pre2P and integrated amps like the Melody SP1 made the EC sound like a doona was placed over the speakers. Even my less discerning Mrs said it was night and day. If you’d like to hear less music and detail then this may be the gear for you. I should have listened to a trusted friend who sold hifi for the last 45 years when he sent me the warning below:

Not all combos play nice

In saying that, on hearing something huge and hideously expensive JBL in the US I thought they were clearly designed as part of MK Ultra to convince people to tear their ear drums out... 1

Just wasn’t for me. And it’s horses for courses. Maybe you need the entire compliment to make it sing. Could also be that I have taste in my **** Edited December 10, 2019 by jakeyb77
mbz Posted December 10, 2019 Posted December 10, 2019 Just thought I'd post that my vintage EC ampliwire (1a?) died. Got it cheap as a parts unit and got it going, sounded good/interesting, replaced a few caps etc.. those tracks were easy to damage, and after listening for a few months the lights went out. Yeah probably a power supply issue. No service manual so it will have to wait...

Are you guys talking about their original 25 watter or the later 100W unit which was still single ended and without the FTT?

Mine's 175 wpc. I purchased it in '86. At the time there was also a limited edition model called the Matti Otala Signature. I'm not sure whether it was a 50 or 75 wpc.
psychometrics1 Posted December 17, 2019 Posted December 17, 2019 I had a Bel Canto Pre2P also and it did sound much better with EC 180M power amps than EC4.7 in my then Perth house. But in Adelaide I preferred 4.5 and now 4.8 with 180Ms. The EC AW100DMB is hard to beat in the power amp range if you don't need extra power and I preferred it to the AW120 tried subsequently. 1
