Cranky with myself that I cant make the Qld ones.

Have put the manual under my pillow to see if it will get into my crusty brain that way. Will start reading it a lot and maybe something might click.

@@wanta911 when you used the Vega dac, did you notice any time alignment stuff happening or do you know how to pilot the DEQX well enough?

Hi Darren,

I didn't have subs in my music setup and I wasn't a great pilot  :P

Probably better DEQX piloting skills than me-

Well an interesting night was had last night.

Alan was never happy with the remote setup of my DEQX HDP4 so on his way to brissy, he dropped in and personally re-measured the component in the room.

You cant get much better support than that.

In a nutshell, we found one woofer had gone pop (Focal are following up on that one), the speakers needed to go 200mm closer to the centre each and away we went.

The system now sounds amazing, the best it ever has and the only profiles I have are with room eq in play and with room eq disabled but still doing crossovers etc. It hasn't gone out of room eq mode yet. :D

That's also all I need.

PW dac is all synched in, room is good down to 25Hz!!

Am playing some very ordinary recordings today and enjoying how good they sound. At a nice SPL as a few Coopers were downed last night as well. :D

DEQX are easily the most supportive company I have ever has the pleasure of working with, fullstop.

Alan, thanks again.

Thats awesome Daz man (apart from the speaker issue of course).

So when you say it went pop was it blown or is it just making mechanical noises when moving?

Perhaps too much IM at concert levels huh  :P  \m/

haha, I can't imagine what you mean. :D

No, not blown, just making a mechanical noise, like something isn't lined up properly. Took the driver out this morning and had a look and it all looks fine, it just makes a crackly sort of noise when one gently moved the driver in and out, just something rubbing methinks.

The other 5 woofer drivers are fine.

It's not a big deal, will chat to the guys I bought them off. Mastadon is currently playing and you cant even hear it, it's just in acoustic music etc.

Yes, saying it went pop is misleading.

Sorry Dazz, I'm not sure I get it??

Are they both the same thing or am I losing my mind?

@@gat474 yes, that's what Alan thought too, something has 'slipped' somewhere.

Now that @@Darren69 has posted I can put in my 2 cents.

We live about 15km apart and he was a gentleman and invited me to the event to personally meet the man behind DEQX and see how a system is configured.  (As I am also a nice guy I accepted invitation  :D .)

I have to confess that my feedback is a bit limited as I dont know the music played during the evening.

It was a fantastic opportunity to meet Alan (@artaudio). In Grafton we are not really part of the big smoke of Sydney and Melbourne, so I can just confirm with what Darren has said how much we appreciate someone like Alan putting in the effort to ensure a DEQX is working well. Darren bought this off Marc which makes this effort even more remarkable and appreciable. I learned a few other things by tapping Alan's knowledge, thanks Alan.

In my simple hifi vocabulary, once Alan has waved his magic wand it was just like everything came together. Darren has Focal 1038's and two subs - the DEQX integrated the sound, made it less fuzzy, the subs 'dissaapeared and everythimng was just sharp/foused/right. It was detailed but not too bright.

Thanks Alan.

Thanks Darren for the invite - I think you can now relax and just enjoy.

Am glad you once again endured Drunk Darren and yet still look back on the experience as positive. :D

Yes, have the second Clearer Audio digital IC still coming for between the DEQX and the PW dac, hook that up and that's it hi-fi wise.

Yeah, you'se can snigger at that comment all you like but I am quite content with the final result. :D

Now to simply listen and buy more CD's.

SO, when you do a speaker mesurement wilth horns (PSE144's) do you set the mic 1m from the end of the flare or the bass of the throat?

@@Darren69 cheers mate, yes I had read that.

I had delusions of grandeur of setting mine up myself. But the more I read the install manual the more my brain hurts. Will probably end up using their online setup.

Dave, yes go that way, I couldn't do it myself either. Al is very careful to set up your room/unit just spot on.

I had grand delusions of maybe learning something and being able to do basic stuff but honestly, once it's set up I see no reason to fiddle.

Don't read the manual, it's too confusing.  Just have a crack.  There's a couple of tutorials on youtube which can be helpful.

Back in the Queensland thread Jiri or Mike? had a screen shot showing multi-stepped-limits in the calibration step that was done by Alan.

I hadn't seen that before even though I thought I had been through the software often enough.  So I tried it and ….. I couldn't get it to work at all.

Maybe it is something to do with cascaded DEQX boxes and not single-amp-with-subs setups like mine.

Any other hints?

Not that it matters to me at the moment, but one never knows.

I dunno, going alone up front is rather brave, if you aren't already a speaker builder, cross-over designer type of person.  I had never even heard of group delay, time alignment, impulse reponse et al when I bought my first DEQX.

My advice would be ….

  • to get Alan to do the initial set-up
  • Watch carefully.  I didn't do this as I was too busy talking to Bill Mclean on the side.
  • After the dust settles, step through the software process and settings that Al did, looking at the parameters and screens (not changing anything though!).  If you do accidentally change something, exit and don't save.
  • Then when things make a bit of sense, make your own 'project', do the steps, make mistakes, try again.  Repeat.  Change stuff and see what happens.  If its still a mystery, visit someone with experience and have a play under supervision.

Understanding and familiarity are keys to the process.

Plan B:  use Alan's set-up and be happy.

Good idea, am working on organising up a time to get Alan to do the setup for me.

3m from the front of the horn if you can - and preferably >3m from any boundary

yes, I hadn't seen it either, nor have I tried it yet - I understand when setting the "limits" for correction during calibration, there should be an "add point" button.

I don't think it has anything to do with double DEQX

The digital out on some DEQX models ...

On the back panel there is a "passthru" digital out socket.  This means that the whole freq range is being passed on to the next device.  I suppose that means you could use it to digitise analogue sources.  I haven't used it so I don't know its ins and outs or full capabilities.

The passthrough digital is also the way to cascade 2 DEQX units to get up to 5 way stereo - prior to this feature, I would have needed to trade-in my HDP3 for 2 new units. Now I can just get a HDP4 and keep using the HDP3 as the "slave".

cheers

Mike

I use the digital out 'mid/full' to add the Perfectwave dac to the equation, not using the DEQX dac for those freqencies, with the low-out RCA's going to the subs. Allan then tied the whole lot together and how.

I haven't heard a million systems but it's the best system I have heard to date, for my taste and still has plenty of flexibility without using typical tone controls.
