My vision is to be able to plug in a phone with music or radio..I have an older sony reciver...

I have 3 acres and i am looking to set up a permanent outdoor sound system. the speakers weigh a hundred pounds or so they will be mounted in the air with some waterproof  bags for the  rain.  Thanks Guys!  RCR

Hi Scott

As what you have brought is a Public address , power amp you will need a small stereo mixer so that you can control the tone. The easiest way to achieve this would be with a DJ mixer with tone controls, treble ,mid and base . You can get them new for a round $100.

This set up will not be Hi Fi but should serve your needs. I use a similar set up at a Motor bike rally that I do the music at .

If you really want to use your Sony Receiver as your Preamp, then you would need a cable to connect the headphone output of your phone into an Auxiliary Input on the Sony Receiver (3.5mm TRS to 2 x RCA), then connect the Tape Output of the Receiver (or Pre-Out if it has one) to the Yamaha Amp with a Stereo RCA to 2x 6.5mm cable like this one.

post-105806-0-84949400-1402458911_thumb.

You can then use the source selector on the Receiver to select between the phone and the Tuner in the Receiver (and any other source that you might connect to the Receiver)

This should work fine, but you may find the signal to noise ratio is not ideal and you might get some hiss because you'd be connecting an unbalanced source to a balanced input.

To solve this you could put a good quality 2-channel passive DI box between the Receiver and the Amp.  e.g. This A.R.T. unit.

http://artproaudio.com/art_products/audio_solutions/di_boxes/product/dpdb/

Use the same cable as above to connect the Receiver to the DI box, then use 2 XLR cables (e.g. Microphone cables) to connect the DI box to the Yamaha Amp.

Note that the volume control on the Receiver will probably not have an effect, as the output would probably be before the volume control.

You would need to adjust the level from the phone and/or the attenuators on the Yamaha Amp.

Hi Scott

Surprisetech's  suggestion is the easiest and cheapest way and that is normally the way to go first but if he is right that you would lose the volume control you may also lose the tone control and the ability to alter the tone may be some thing you would want.

Also the DJ mixer you are suggesting appears to have no tone control, only volume. If Canada is any thing like here there should be plenty  second hand DJ mixers about from people who thought they were going to be the next DJ super star but then gave up so if  after trying it ,you are not happy with using the Sony ,the cost will have only have been a few leads ,you can then look for a second hand mixer with tone control.

The Yamaha amps are great. I've lost count of how many I've owned over the years, especially when I was running my PA. I still have 2 P7000S and a P2500S as part of my home system with the larger unit driving some of the subs, and the smaller the midbasses on two of the surrounds.

I see no need whatsoever to buy anything but a few leads to connect the Yam amp to the AVR.  This will be more intuitive for non tech family members and friends than a mixer to use and it will likely do all you need it to: source selection, VC and a bit of gain as well as AM/FM. It should have more than enough output to drive the Yam to full power and best of all, it's free.

The Yam power amps have a staged fan that will come on progressively as it heats up, but for longevity, place it somewhere out of the sun and weather.

Edit: I should have clicked on the link. The older P series are just as good, and all the points made above apply. Most of the units I used in my PA were of this generation and I only bought the P7000S toward the end of that time to drive some extra PA subs. I still have a P3500 and a P2350 in the system as well. Both are quite old now, and even after years of hard work in pubs are still in excellent order. You can't kill these with a stick.

I am new to this so i much appreciate all the advice!  RCR

Need a bit more info before answering this one.

What Model is the Sony Receiver?  It might have an output that is post Vol & Tone controls, in which case you needn't look any further.

If your receiver has preouts and perhaps if your lucky a Zone 2 operation all you will need is some leads to get up and running.

I also have a slightly older P2500 which is great.

It's got the CD-R OUT and the VIDEO 1 OUT, but I very much suspect that these would both be coming off the signal path BEFORE the tone and volume controls.

I wouldn't bother with DJ Mixers and the like.  See if you can find a nice 2nd hand AVR with a Pre Out.

You're probably best looking locally, as most of what's on offer on Stereonet would be the wrong mains voltage and would incur pretty hefty shipping costs.

Hi  The Yamaha mixer would be perfect as your pre amp. In general it is not a good idea to have speakers permanently out side in damp conditions or rain unless they were specifically built as out door speakers. The cones are made of paper and do not respond well to being damp let alone wet, plus dampness will affect the connections and cause corrosion. You could cover them with plastic tarps to keep the weather off but it would not be a good idea to have them permanently out side.
