Andythiing Posted August 15, 2023 Posted August 15, 2023 New to us - re-homed 2.5 year old German Shorthaired Pointer called Ned - Ned came to us from a great home and is the best trained dog I’ve ever owned (I’m nervous about maintaining his high standard). he was a much loved dog who lived on a large property but unfortunately an incident with a neighbours sheep meant he had to be moved urgently or not live to see another day - luckily for him (and us) we have been able to give him a new home. im going to be getting pretty fit - he is an ACTIVE boy 16 4
t_mike Posted February 25, 2024 Posted February 25, 2024 CoCo and Murphy, the two young Cocker Spaniels, have finally had all their needles. This means today was their first walk, ably led by their older cohabitants Winston and Aubrey. 4

purpleninja Posted March 31, 2024 Posted March 31, 2024 Our almost 5yo miniature schnauzer has been unwell for the last 6 weeks - vet's not sure but keeps doing blood tests, we've tried different foods but she's losing weight and unsteady on her legs. Worried it's something systemic and serious. She was very talkative but hasn't made much noise since she was unwell. First photo taken 5 mins ago, second photo was when I was going to give her a wash on Friday and she knew it was coming and crawled under the chair 4 5
Megawolf Posted April 1, 2024 Posted April 1, 2024 Mate, hope the little one turns out okay. Best of luck. 1

Poor little mite - keeps looking up at us as if saying "fix it Dad" 3

From what you describe there it sounds like it's something pretty serious. (though I hope it isn't) My advice would be to take her to a different vet to find someone with the right experience to be able to properly diagnose her. As good as your current vet might be another set of eyes can't hurt. I was lucky with my last dog Zoe that my vet was very knowledgeable and able to diagnose her properly and while it wasn't something that was possible to cure I was at least able to give her a little bit longer and do the best I could for her. Not knowing what's wrong with her must be awful. I could tell you exactly who to take her to if you were in Melbourne but hopefully some of the SA members might be able to chime in with some suggestions of a good vet. 1 1

Schnauzers are very susceptible to Pancreatitis, has the vet checked her Pancreatic function? I hope that some good news is coming soon, as suggested by @Martykt a second opinion would be worth seeking just to be sure something hasn’t been overlooked. Good luck mate. 1 1

Thanks Ooogh - the first set of bloods they did a few weeks ago ruled out pancreatitis as this is (as you said) a common occurrence in mini schnauzers. They did another set of bloods today and also sent them off for a Coombs test - as her blood oxygen is very low (hence she pants a lot and is breathing quickly and heavily to get more air and oxygen into her system), and they're not sure if it is an immune issue, or something like leukaemia or anemia. She's on steroids and some other stuff to help her stomach deal with the steroids - and in the meantime we just keep her well fed with whatever she will eat and give her a bit extra TLC. Hopefully the tests come back in the next 2 days and we know more. We don't want to overly treat her if the quality of her life is affected - we just want her to be happy and peaceful - hopefully this will also mean she is this with us, as opposed to going to sleep. Our 12 yo son is taking it particularly hard, an our 16 yo daughter is being more stoic but you can see she's worried also. For a little food seeking missile and chatterbox to be subdued, very quiet and not eat much is quite a shock - especially as just 5-6 weeks ago she was completely normal (at least she appeared that way to us). Fingers crossed. Thanks for all the kind wishes and advice everyone - the sense of community at SN really is something! 3 1 4
purpleninja Posted April 4, 2024 Posted April 4, 2024 Tests came back today - she has autoimmune haemolytic anaemia (AIHA) - an immune system disease in which the body attacks and destroys its own red blood cells. In dogs with AIHA, red blood cells are still being manufactured in the bone marrow, but once released into circulation, they have a shorter-than-normal life span. https://www.facebook.com/dralexhynes/photos/a.1690090841206412/1912431642305663/?type=3 It all comes down to the next week or so when she has the initial treatment, as if she gets through this then she has a chance of a decent-ish quality of life with careful management. But we've been told that during the next period her heart could just give out or she could go into organ failure. She's young, healthy (well before this), and a fighter - so we're hoping for the best. 3 4

Thank you for the kind thoughts. She spent her first night away from us last night. Being given high dose antibiotics to reduce her temperature and then she will be given steriods to hopefully stop her body killing her own red blood cells. We pick her up at 1.40pm today as the vet can't keep her over the weekend as they have no staffing. Hopefully this works as the symptoms were not fully haemolytic anaemia which may mean there is another underlying issue as well. One step at a time - fingers crossed. It just will be great to have her back home. 2 2
GregWormald Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 (edited) @purpleninjaI had great specialist care for my dying cat at "The Austin". The woman who helped Maks and me was trained at what is generally acknowledged as one of the very best vet schools in the world—University of California, Davis. I hope your mate is OK. We are currently going to the Glen Osmond Road vets who were recommended to us by a friend. Has been good so far. Will keep "The Austin" in mind.
Megawolf Posted May 27, 2024 Posted May 27, 2024 It`s definitely a dogs life. You might want to pound in some of those nails holding down the boards, can make a mess of the puppies feet.

I use a nail punch when I do it, to minimise repeat offenders. 1
