Hi all, decided last week that I'd have a crack at building a sub for my HT, as I recently got a Pioneer reciever for my 21st....

Had to do an order at work for some stuff from Electus (jaycar wholesale distro for those who don't know) and was rushed in my decision as the order needed to be in asap to get shipped that day...

Grabbed an 80w@4ohm amp... and a Venom 10"...

which was great - until, after recieving it we ran the specs to design a vented box.... 199.8L

one of the guys at work got the design down to 120L which I was happy enough with, so off I went with some cutting measurements and got it all cut at the local thriftylink hardware store from 18mm MDF.

the finished product is rather... large, in the least... but I'm happy enough with it for now - gave me something to do for the weekend and I can always use that amp for a better driver in the future (sub cost $45ish, box $55ish roughly). It has a 100mmx145mm port. Pictures of the sub location etc aren't great as I built it to be down-firing, with 3.45x3.45" feet 4" long each...

it's not terribly great for music but it does play very low for a cheap 10" with a bass test cd, works fantastically for movies at the moment with the rather basic setup i've begun with (just the two fronts im borrowing from my father, no centre or surround etc). Looks impressive just sitting there tho, even if it is overkill for what it does... LoL.

at least I know to do my research first next time :-/

also, I've seen somewhere that the amp should be driven using a Y cable - I need to make a longer lead to run the sub so i can hide it behind the couch so my gf doesn't kill me :P so I'll just make that single to double RCA

Looks like a fun project.

You may find downfiring will reduce the output over time as the suspension will sag. This is less of a problem with drivers with a lot of excursion and stiff suspension, but I think those venoms have a modest xmax. It's probably ok for a sub you will upgrade in the near future though.

Looking at your setup, if you keep all other things as they are, one idea for a future sub is to make a tall triangle sub in the corner behind everything. It will fit in the corner, take up a very small footprint. Make it white and it will look like part of the room. Put in say a pair of quality 12" sub drivers like the XLS then make a vented box, with them push-pull mounted for lower distortion (ie one driver has its magnet pointing out of the box with its polarity reversed).

mate that looks nice, but geese talk about overkill hahaha that thing is huge

i guess if it does the job then whos complaining,

Good work mate and when it comes to needing a bigger box u already got 1

:P

That is huge!!! I love it,

I was thinking about doing something similar but the G/f would never let me have anything that big, What sort of volume would the box need if it was sealed?

man, thats 1 nice sub :P 120ltrs not bad compared to the 250ltr sub i have! tho it's big for a reason. it's a horn design and you cant really have a small horn that produces frequencies down to 35hz unless you can change the laws of physics!

anyways, i am using the same sub amp as you, but i am using the one RCA input. i dont think you really need to use both the L and R inputs on the sub unless you are running a preamp, 3 or 4 way active crossover with multiple power amps and using the sub amp for the lower freqs. will you be painting the box with any kind of finish/look??

trying to decide what to do with finishes, probably going to try and find some sort of iron on black veneer or something, and stain the pine legs sort of a rose wood colour if I can.... if I end up building speakers for the rest of the setup i'll do them similar style.

i've ordered a couple of RCA ends from a supplier at work for SFA so i'll have a go at a longish y cable and see if it makes any difference

Thanks for the plug Tom!

Postage on the vinyl veneer is quite good but the timber veneer is definitely a killer unless you purchase at least 4 or 5 sheets. 1 sheet of timber veneer costs almost as much as 5 sheets as they fit into the same size box once rolled up together. You can purchase the same veneer from Bunnings, however they only tend to stock the 1.2 metre sheets whereas we only stock the 2.4 metre sheets which works out much cheaper.

Hi Scott,

re: the size of the veneer sheets.

I've used the Bunnings veneer packs and found them to be handy. Is your 2.4m long sheet any wider than the 300mm aprox. product offered by them?

No. They are still 305mm long. However, depending on the height of the speaker the extra length allows the veneer to wrap from left over the top and down the right side as a continuous grain. This results in more aesthetically pleasing joins.

what are the postage costs like on the vinyl veneers? I'm liking the black style thats on the site, probably be buying speakers and that would be the finish i'd get so if i can make my sub match it would be good...

Postage depends on where you are - send me your postcode and i can let you know, otherwise just pretend to buy one through the website and cancel it after you have selected the shipping options to see the cost to your area. I must remind you though we are out of stock of the black (as stated on the website) and won't have any for a few months. This stuff is extremely expensive to ship from the US and we have to wait until we are almost out of stock of everything before we can justify placing an order big enough to bring down the shipping costs per unit to a tangible level!

Hi Scott..............does ANYONE make Iron on veneer in strips wider than 305mm.

Damned if I've ever seen any anywhere?

I've never been able to find anything wider than 305mm in the iron-on form. I've even spoken directly to the Australian manufacturer and they don't know of any and don't intend on making any wider themselves. It's very FRUSTRATING!
