fuddbutter Posted September 14, 2004 Posted September 14, 2004 what do you lean towards more HiFi or home theater? im more of a HiFi guy, 2 channels is enough for me
dazd Posted September 14, 2004 Posted September 14, 2004 hifi because: for the same price you could either have a very good music setup or only a mediocre HT setup
shiny_car Posted September 15, 2004 Posted September 15, 2004 hifi, although i am going about creating a premium HT setup. i probably listen to music:HT at 5:1, although having a digital STB for watching TV in dolby digital is nice. 1
the_wonderchild Posted September 15, 2004 Posted September 15, 2004 I probably like HT more but at the moment Hi-Fi just seems more of a chance of occuring in my life, so i have taken a big interest in that recently.
Guest Leoninmelbourne Posted November 15, 2005 Posted November 15, 2005 Definetly HI FI...!!! But If I have a spare room, would be nice to have a set up for DTS & THX equipment that can handle the spl of HT. I'm actually in a transision where I'm trying to get rid of my HT and trying to source more of a 2 channel gears. Leon.
Aslan Posted November 16, 2005 Posted November 16, 2005 I guess I'm lucky in that I can indulge in 2 totally seperate systems...............makes the lounge room rather crowded though, but I dont have WAF to worry about these days.
soundfan Posted November 16, 2005 Posted November 16, 2005 I too run 2 seperate systems and up until about 2 months back I had 3 going. 1. A dedicated HT system with 5 speakers and sub. 2. A valve integrated amp with CD player and tuner. 3. 2 valve mono blocks, valve pre, phono pre, CD player and Turntable. It was taking up a little too much room and speaker placement was a hassle, so system 2 was taken out. Definately listen to more 2 channel than 5 channel. You can only watch a dvd so many times  , on the other hand I may play the same record or CD many times in a short time span. I went through my "movie phase" about 2 years back, and since then its been all 2 channel. And I do have WAF on my side.
audiophile_kid Posted November 18, 2005 Posted November 18, 2005 yeah good old 2 channel hi-fi but i listen to my music with 2 pairs of speakers
dlite Posted November 18, 2005 Posted November 18, 2005 Gee I am suprised I am primarily 2 channel as well, I am suprised there are so few HT buffs here.
Tweaky Posted November 18, 2005 Posted November 18, 2005 I think there might be more, but owning up to it might be a problem for some-sudo HT-not matching speakers etc. I had two different systems, but it got rediculous on the acerage department regarding speakers, especially as I live in a flat, and not a big one at that . Iv'e settled for a Kick arse HT with projector at the moment.....see how long this lasts before I get bored of it,or upgrade to active speakers with Lexicon processor..see what happens,as you do. The fact that you need to paint your walls a dark colour to get a decent HT might put some off geting it right....It DOES change the mood regarding standard stereo replay. Bloody brilliant for pink floyd though. Get it right though.......it's hard to return depending on the Music. Most MUSIC sounds better in stereo, ever tied a 6.1 system with a MONO source and replayed that way......that will really shake your head, try it! In the scope and will almost certainly get in the next month-Sanyo Z4 projector New toy for xmas....love it!
aka_nsx Posted November 19, 2005 Posted November 19, 2005 lucky for me i can get both system in my lounge, 1st system HT 7.1 150" screen running Boston speaker w/ Pioneer processor N DVD player 2nd system Valve CD player running valve preamp and stasis power amp w/ Martin Logan speaker
Aslan Posted November 20, 2005 Posted November 20, 2005 Ahh yes Pink Floyd..............I'm, currently spinning the live double CD - Delicate Sound of Thunder - in the car. "we dont need no education.............................."
56oval Posted November 24, 2005 Posted November 24, 2005 2 systems:HT marantz 7300,JmLABS choris ?,necHT1000 DLP in rumpus room for the wife & kids. 2 channel system:Philips 1541 based dac with dual valve 5v4 rec power supply solen,s,B/G caps,6c45pi output tubes,pre-amp 6h30pi valves,600ohm output trannies separate dual valve 5v4 power supplys, scott thomson 300b mono blocks and cabasse speakers also a 4500VA mains Isolation Transformer buy black Art Audio in Melbourne.Black Art also designed the pre & power supply for the dac, scott designed the dac.I ,ve put the chasis together out of 2.5 mm copper its been good to use local no how and it competes with anything from over seas I had Audio Note dac and pre before.Next is to build a pair of mono blocks.
A.K. Posted November 27, 2005 Posted November 27, 2005 Same here, two separate 2 ch. systems in the same rather large living room ( 7.5 x 5.5 mtrs), one E - W the other N - S. Home theatre is served by the second system ( Densen DM 10, Yamaha Tuner, Rotel CD player, Pioneer DV 717 player, into a pair of Rogers LS7 large standmounds, with 8'' bass drivers). The LS7s are suprisingly suitable for both Music and HT, their low end is as good as the big KEF Reference 3 / two, that I use for Music only, via Naim CD5i, Audiolab 8000T tuner, Creek OBH 12 passive preamp, and Meridian 556 power amp. Love the sound of both systems, but most time is spend playing Music, in fact, the ratio would be 5:1. Speakers and kit dominate the living room but I also haven't got the problem of WAF so I take liberties! No thoughts as yet to get a full Dolby system, most of the kit I hear when I visit Dick Smith, or J B L electronics sounds like crap compared to my 2 ch. tv setup so, why spend money for that?
GimmeHiFi Posted November 28, 2005 Posted November 28, 2005 I'd prefer to have a $2000 2 channel setup than a $2000 5.1 setup. I wouldn't comprimise SQ for 3 extra crap speakers and a Sub.
Aslan Posted November 28, 2005 Posted November 28, 2005 That's your problem Lep, you're visiting Dick Smith and JB Electronics..........thats not HiFi (or Real HT for that matter).
Tweaky Posted November 28, 2005 Posted November 28, 2005 That's a bit harsh Ajw,Lep's stereo system is not one to be taken lightly, quality kit. That being said,Dick smith isn't the worst,Iv'e seen some shoddy setups at some [so called] HI-FI/HT specialists stores. Some people don't NEED it IN YOUR FACE SOUND regarding video replay,I was of the same opinion untill I bought my first projector[on my sixth now],then matters changed,I wanted the full blast so to speak, went over the top [as I tend to get over enthused at times]have since tamed it down a smigin. Getting HT right is a damm site harder that getting stereo replay great, they should be kept seperate if possible as HT does not always make for good, let alone great stereo replay as I have found out. Just trying to cable both systems together can make drastic differences to a stereo system without moving anything.
Aslan Posted November 28, 2005 Posted November 28, 2005 Actually Leporello's stereo is probably better than mine at the moment! And you're right regarding stereo and HT being better separate, I originally tried to combine both and was not overly happy with the compromises required. I guess if you had mega bucks to spend on amplification and processing you could do it.

You're right, of course, the only reason I go there is that I 'keep an eye' on the prices of plasma/ lcd screens as, the life of my 13 y.o. 70 cm. Blaupunkt tv set, is coming to an end, the usual signs are there.. So sometime soon I will have to invest on a new set. With my 2 ch. HT setup, if I pull the LS7s a bit forward into the room, I get fully holographic sound that extends way beyond the boundaries of the room both in the width and the depth plane. Good enough for me, the only thing I miss is a remote for the volume as the Densen hasn't got such facility.
Mike.L Posted November 29, 2005 Posted November 29, 2005 i went the home theatre option and spent plenty... since have sold it all and have gone back to stereo for everything. As has been previously pointed out hifi will get you more bang for your bucks which all makes sense
Pulse-R Posted November 30, 2005 Posted November 30, 2005 my next will be HTPC, I currently have a reasonable Hifi, but with all this digital stuff now, that seems to be the way to go you still need amps and speakers for HTPC, just the source is different.

I've been told BTW, by an audiophile friend that using a Densen DM10 for HT is criminal (!), it's a waste of a top amplifier and that I need my head looked!   Each to their own..
Aslan Posted November 30, 2005 Posted November 30, 2005 I dont believe using any high end gear for HT is criminal at all, quite the contrary, the vast majority of new movies have exceptional sound quality, spl and dynamic range. Good gear simply brings out the best in the recording, and lets you know what's really there. If Leon gets over here on Saturday night, he will know exactly what I mean. BTW you're also welcome if you have nothing else on...........were just having a bit of a kick back and relax demo evening.
A.K. Posted December 1, 2005 Posted December 1, 2005 Yes, I agree with you, high quality components will bring the best out of both, two channel audio and H.T. To this particular friend though, HT means - at best - Sony, Yamaha or Pioneer receivers, and the use of a 'high end' quality amp. for such purposes is insane. Like I said. Each to their own, it's a big World this one! :-D :-D Thanks for the kind invitation ajw 056 but I am already committed to take the grandson to see Sydney FC at 8 pm, so can't go back on my word. Perhaps some other time, it will be a pleasure. I am sure you guys will have a great listening evening.
