awty Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 I didnt even want a dog, told them I'd end up being the only one that feeds it, walks it, picks up its sh!t etc.,the rest of the family hassled me for years telling me they'd do everything. Anyway they wore me down and picked one up........and yes I do all the walking, feeding etc., but he's my best mate now and always close by. Be hard when they get old, yours looks like its still got a few miles to go Duc. The White Stripes "A boys best friends" "My dogs come sit next to meA pack of dogs and cigarettesMy only friends speak no words to meBut they look at me and they don't forgetThat a boy's best friendIs his mother or whatever has become his pet" 1
Art Vandelay Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 I got the call from my 80 year old father recently, asking me to come down and take his 45kg's of (12 years) old English sheep down to the vet. He had been a great pet as well as my dad's best friend after his (much younger) lady friend walked out on him more than five years ago, and with failing eyesight the dog had also become his eyes and ears. For the past 6 months though the old boy had been on a daily diet of morphine pills and other painkillers to treat rheumatoid arthritis, so it had been clear for a while that he was living on borrowed time. I was there to see the final 12 seconds after the injection. It was incredibly fast and clearly painless, but nonetheless heartbreaking. 4
Nada Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 I wonder if its a good idea for me to get a puppy when my dog gets to late middle age eg 10 years old. That way she can look after a puppy and then have some company as she gets older and I can always enjoy a dog at home. Would that work? Im planning to "euthanise" my dog at home if she tells me she's had enough. I reckon her eyes will tell me what she's wanting. I think she deserves to die at home rather then in a strange clinic and imagine my vet would make a house call considering? Then Ill bury her in one of her favourite spots in the garden and plant a native tree over her. Maybe a tree that that flowers and feeds parrots. Then the bird calls will recycle her joy.
blybo Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 (edited) My wife is a vet. Although incredibly rewarding to her, I don't know how she distances herself when giving "the injection". She's a city vet so doesn't do many house calls but it still does happen occasionally. These types of threads often bring me close to tears... and my Roxy is still 7 years young. If getting a puppy I strongly advise looking into pet insurance so you know you can give the best care possible without worrying about $$$. Edited September 23, 2014 by blybo 1
progladyte Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 Great thread Lee and other contributors. Mrs Boss and I have steered clear of dogs for many years but would love to own one whenever we move to an area more dog friendly and with more open spaces. Too many macho jerks around here parading their super aggressive guard dogs to feel safe. For all the differences, anxiety, bitterness etc humans can generate between one another, dogs know of no such emotions. If you've had a crappy day at work, the wife and you are fighting, your fence has fallen down and you just lost your job, a dog will be there as your best mate still wagging it's tail and will be really pleased to have you around. That is one true mate-ship I have yet to experience. 1
Luc Posted September 23, 2014 Author Posted September 23, 2014 Yeah dogs are cool. You can see why they're such great therapy for old people in nursing homes and sick kiddies in hospitals ect. Having a near deaf dog though has some benefits as when I crank it up and the Handbrake sends a glare shaped like an Exocet I just shrug and go: "He can't hear can he so I turn it up a bit. He likes this track ya know!" To the retreating back of a mini thundercloud... 1
Art Vandelay Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 My brother has 2 Asian Leopard cats that roam the house. He estimates the damage at around $80,000. To give you some idea of what I'm talking about, I'll take a few photos of his VAF speakers next time I'm up there.

Art Vandelay Posted September 23, 2014 Posted September 23, 2014 $80 grand! They be called Left and Right ...Slippers,if they were mine! Everything in the house is a scratching post. When I visit I'm almost scared to stand still. 1
Luc Posted October 15, 2014 Author Posted October 15, 2014 Sad news on the message bank this morning as the lady looking after my dog while we're here in Melbourne informed me that he died last night. I'm gutted. Bad timing all round but hopefully I'll get in shape for later in the week. It had to happen of course but I'd of liked to have been there.

Grumpy Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 So sad and sorry to hear that news luc - this thread has created a lifetime of memories to flood back, unfortunately there are too bloody many when you have been a Dog lover-owner for 60 something years. I feel like I've lost another one and I never met your Dog Luc. We feel your pain today
Luc Posted October 16, 2014 Author Posted October 16, 2014 Yeah I'm shattered, can't stop tearing up. Thanks for your thoughts guys. My sister and son just buried him outside my man cave . So that's a bit of closure there. 1
progladyte Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 So sorry to hear about your loss Lee, I know you were best mates and will find it hard to part company. Chin up mate! Best regards, Greg
Tony M Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 Sorry to hear, Luc. Hope it helps a bit to know that so many here understand what you're experiencing. The whippet in my avatar was put down earlier this year - very sad at the time, but that eases leaving all the great memories of the good times.
cheekyboy Posted October 16, 2014 Posted October 16, 2014 I just picked up on this thread, Lee, and it's so sad to read your pal has gone. I can empathise, as I can see so many others here do too Keith
