danter Posted October 11, 2014 Posted October 11, 2014 Item:Item: Toshiba SS-30 3 Way Tri Wireable Vintage Speakers with Alinco drivers Location: Sydney Price: $550 Item Condition: Great for age (approx 50 yrs now!) Drivers in excellent condition. The cabinet’s are solidly made of ply and are veneered with a bit of veneer chipping. The front internal panels have a different factory finish (see pics). Overall condition is very good, grills pretty much flawless, drivers same applies, cosmetics are pure 60’s without the kitsch and aurally just beautiful! … these are valve friendly. No known work done to cross-overs. Reason for selling: I have 6 pairs of speakers in my lounge room. I need to sell them for the sake of peace in the household. Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only Extra Info: Unbelievably good three-way tri-wirable vintage speakers. Hard to beat at this price - which is comparable to a pair of KEF Concertos which these easily best in my opinion. The KEFs may deliver a littl emore in the bass, but that is more than made up for in almost every other respect. Dimensions are 400 x 740 x 220 mm / 15.7 x 29.1 x 8.7 inch and about 16.5kg each or 37lb each and are 40W rated, 25cm compliance woofer,12cm midrange speaker and a 6cm horn tweeter as well as a passive 25cm ‘radiator’ cone, frequency range is 40 - 20,000 hz and crossover frequency 1,500 and 5,000 hz. In SteveM's words (as an owner) - "...the Toshiba SS-30 are a rare beastie and would compete with anything up to $10K modern, if speed and freedom from box colouration is your mandate!" Here is the ad when Steve was selling his with a number of glowing recommendations from those who have had the pleasure of hearing these. ... http://www.stereo.net.au/forums/index.php?/topic/12859-toshiba-ss-30-threeway-monitor-alnico-loudspeaker/?hl=toshiba And from Steve's blog (apologies for the plagiarism here Steve, but there is not a lot out there - in english at least- to reference these -first google post is some lucky bugger picking up a pair for under $100 back in 2011!) “Are Audiophiles like Fishermen (generally a bit secretive)??This is my good deed for the day, I will let you in on a little secret, if you can lay your hands on a pair of Toshiba SS-30 Monitor loudspeakers, do so! I don't usually like giving away hi-fi secrets and like a Fisherman protecting his favourite fishing spot, I do this reluctantly. But, this circa 1965 loudspeaker is absolutely fantastic - as good as anything modern. As you can see from my previous posts, I've tried just about every type of loudspeaker technology out there including Accutons & Ravens and this old Toshiba is the bees-knees! the best of them all in a lot of ways.Someone at Toshiba Corp must've have given this project to a serious DIY speaker builder. The SS-30 is a threeway design that incorporates all Alnico drivers bass-mid-treble in a sealed box with 9" passive radiator , simple First Order crossover (capacitor only) on the mid-treble and Tri-wireable (in 1965) waaay ahead of its time! How does it sound? In a few words seriously FAST, NEUTRAL and SEAMLESS. Clarity is first rate and it does Jazz, vocals and classical very well. Piano tone and the sense of spaciousness and separation is as good as most things I've heard.Any caveats? Well, I suppose if you were really picky the bass is kind of the 50 Hz variety and could do with some help. My TL subwoofer boxes sound great with them. These speakers are pretty RARE in Australia, with probably only a half dozen special export examples. I've got my pair of Toshibas and there's not much chance of another pair showing up in Australia, so I don't mind sharing this info.†Pictures:
bjc Posted October 11, 2014 Posted October 11, 2014 I think I found who my Sonics A330 ripped off back in the day! Speakers, positioning, and finish are all similar except mine has a front port which totally ruins the sound of the El Cheapo Sonics...
