Then I saw a redbelly black with a frog in his mouth. Frogs are good barra bait. Knowing the snake couldn't bite me with the frog in his mouth I grabbed him right behind the head, took the frog, and put it in my bait bucket. Now the problem was how to release the snake without getting bitten. So, I grabbed my bottle of Jack Daniels and poured a little whiskey in its mouth. His eyes rolled back, he went limp. I released him into the lake without incident and carried on fishing using the frog. A little later, I felt a nudge on my foot. It was that bloody snake, with two more frogs. I had the same experience, except it was a taipan, and I used bread soaked in Jack. Who'd have thought?

Some conjecture abounds on this. It's unlikely that it's because Thomas Jefferson had a daughter called Susan, as the device was called a dumbwaiter well into the 19th Century. There's schools of thought that it was just another English use of a christian name (a la Black-Eyed Susan, Jim-Dandy, Peeping Tom, Jolly Roger) for no apparent reason or that it was because many serving girls of the era were called Susan. I'm guessing marketeers decided that the appeal of having 3 z/s sounds in succession would stick in the minds of those they were appealing to...

I thought a 'dumb waiter' was the term used (for centuries) for a small (generally hand-operated) lift that was used to get cooked food up 1 or 2 storeys from the kitchen to the dining room! At least - we have a 'dumb waiter' installed in our house, to be able to get cartons of wine from just inside the garage door (ground floor) to the basement ... where my cellar is, instead of having to carry them down one flight of stairs. 4

The 'lifts' took their name from the rotating serving trays in the mid 19th C (I think that's the right period) and they shared the name until more recently.
