Dust Posted February 11 Posted February 11 What an embarrassing pedant I must be for this to be my first comment in years... An acronym is an abbreviation of a phrase that is pronounced as a word (NATO, scuba, radar etc). An initialism is an abbreviation of a phrase where the letters are pronounced (FBI, DEI, WTF etc) 3

An initialism is an abbreviation of a phrase where the letters are pronounced (FBI, DEI, WTF etc) I first took Skye B's post as a statement (given there was no question mark at the end). So I concluded Skye must be someone who is intelligence-deficient. But Dust's clear exposition of acronym vs. initialism (should the word in fact be 'initialym '?) suggested to me that Skye is, probably, merely age-deficient. I mean ... punctuation is sooo 'Boomer'! 1 1
