Lenehan Audio Posted July 17, 2017 Author Posted July 17, 2017 Ok Lads a few more details this is basically a conventional rear ported 2 way mini monitor built from MDF , Front baffle and top is 32mm with the rest of the enclosure 18mm. internal bracing is 12mm ply with two 25mm hardwood dowel and two 12mm dowel differential braces. The Xover network is comprised of an electrical 2nd order filter utilising a 12awg hand wound air cored inductor with a super low 0.193ohm DCR . The high pass is a Quasi Third order filter using Metalised Polypropelene caps and a hand wound 20awg air core inductor. Resistors are low TC Metal oxides. Internal wiring is dual 24awg solid core ( Cat6) Internal foam is critical so we've used high density memory foam . How do they measure ? Absolutely impecibly . How do they sound ? In a word awesome ! Bass is extended with more stomp than you could reasonably expect from a speaker this size , mids and top end are 3D and fast . There will be a GTG of course so all these wild manufacturers claims can be investigated by the SNA cognisenti ! I'll post again in a couple of days with some pics and a few more details. Regards Mike Lenehan 3

bhobba Posted July 18, 2017 Posted July 18, 2017 Hi Guys Just spoke to Mike and will be taking a trip down there next week to hear them. My plan is I will get a pair as a Kit, Rawl99 if he gets time builds them, and we compare it to his ML1 Reference he has as his upstairs system. He can comment on how hard they are to build etc. Mike mentioned there may be a version available with upgraded capacitors like Janzen superior or a high quality bypass like a Duelund bypass - it depends what can be fitted inside the speaker. Should prove very interesting. Thanks Bill

I'm going to let the first 10 pair out for $1000 as an introductory thing . We are trying to hold the price at $1,200 ,whether this is possible will make itself evident after this first 10 pair. Bear in mind that Everything will be supplied to finish this product right down to the two different types of glue adhesive required. Regards Mike Lenehan 2
Gremrock Posted July 18, 2017 Posted July 18, 2017 I'd love to build a pair but I have nowhere to use them haha. 2 systems is enough apparently
Lenehan Audio Posted July 25, 2017 Author Posted July 25, 2017 Here's a few pics of the new kit enclosures . I'll be posting some measurements in a day or two Regards Mike Lenehan Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 6 1
Lenehan Audio Posted July 25, 2017 Author Posted July 25, 2017 Hi Batty Yup just looks like a nice little MDF box but the time it took to reduce energy storage and stop this enclosure from making a noise was down to design alone .I couldn't get upto my old tricks and just add steel plates and cast iron rods here and there .Cheers MikeSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 2
Lenehan Audio Posted July 27, 2017 Author Posted July 27, 2017 Hi Lads Ok attached is an anti phase frequency response taken at 1mt 45 degrees off axis ! Note the sharp arrow head dip 30db deep exactly at the Xover point .This shows exact integration of the Highpass and lowpass Xover filters !! In other words this speaker will sound like a full range speaker with excellent transparency and speed . Regards MikeSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk 2
Lenehan Audio Posted July 27, 2017 Author Posted July 27, 2017 Ok some more measurements! You can now see the Woofer and tweeter measurements in blue!! Note that the bottom of the anti phase notch in yellow is EXACTLY in line with the Xover point as depicted by the vertical yellow line .Also see the in phase measurement in blue at the top.Ever 45 degrees off axis this kit speaker is + or - 1db from 200hz to 15khz . More tomorrow Lads. MikeSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Lenehan Audio Posted July 30, 2017 Author Posted July 30, 2017 (edited) Update ! Ok have a look at the measurement above of the kit speaker and you can see the slight bump at 4200hz !! This is caused by a slightly high Q high pass response. Although the anti phase response shows the phase integration of the Xover is excellent there is a slight amplitude bump right there at 4200 hz. This is slightly audible on some female vocals and acoustic steel string guitar . Basically when a speaker is very close to dead on correct a slight glitch like this becomes audible , some people like a slight bump like this in a speakers response it makes for a great 10 minute HiFi shop demo . The problem is this ! VERY IMPORTANT > any distortion or non linearity in a loudspeaker will be in both speakers ( Duh , thanks Mike that's obvious) Ok this means that it's a mono distortion and any mono signal injected into the undistorted stereo music feed will reduce sound staging depth and 3D imaging . Take a look at the measurement of a Well known high end loudspeaker below ! You can see the diaphragm breakup mode of the Mid bass driver at 3800hz then also see the glitch in the tweeter response at the same frequency , this unfortunate combination results in a gross and very audible on axis peak at this same frequency Regards Mike Lenehan Edited July 30, 2017 by Lenehan Audio Change details
Guest rmpfyf Posted July 30, 2017 Posted July 30, 2017 @Lenehan Audio ery nice work. Any interest in making a version w/out the crossover (so that customers could implement it digitally)?

Any interest in making a version w/out the crossover (so that customers could implement it digitally)? Hi rmpfyf yes ok ! you could use something as inexpensive as say a Behringer active Xover or as all out as a DEQX PreMate+ . We could certainly supply a kit with no Xovers ,biwire terminals and some recommendations re Xover point and slopes etc. Regards Mike Lenehan 2
Lenehan Audio Posted August 3, 2017 Author Posted August 3, 2017 Here's a pic of the finalised prototype hardwired Xover ! The final topology is Quasi Third order Low pass and High pass . Heavy guage 12AWG inductors , 250v Metalised Polypropelene Capacitors and Low TC wirewound resistors ! The Xovers weigh 1.5 kg's each so there's no compromise in parts quality . We are currently weighting on delivery of our PC boards and putting the finishing touch's on the construction bible . Stay tuned Lads. Regards Mike Lenehan 3 1
bhobba Posted August 3, 2017 Posted August 3, 2017 Down at Mikes listening to my Bridge MQA and heard it with the crossover fully tweaked. Sounds fantastic. Remember the Proac tablet?. Its about $2200 US. Now its been years since I heard one - but I think these are better - and cheaper. Now Mike can finish my Magnesium's. Enough said. Tanks Bill 1
Lenehan Audio Posted August 7, 2017 Author Posted August 7, 2017 Hi guys I've been thinking about sending a pair of built kit speakers on a bit of a tour . This would be for my own feedback as well as to give you guys a feel for just how good a $1200 loudspeaker can be . I'm thinking that maybe just a fee of $50 to help with shipping ! Perhaps you could keep the speakers for say 3/4days then on ship them to the next listener. I would ask for some reasonable feedback on what your hearing of course. ! We could communicate via email and I could rebook shipping to the next listener ? Anyone care give me a bit of feedback on this wild idea ? Regards Mike Lenehan 2
MrRogers Posted August 7, 2017 Posted August 7, 2017 Great idea Mike. There's nothing like listening to them in your own living room.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

mikey d Posted August 7, 2017 Posted August 7, 2017 Mike I would love to hear them set up in my room. If they are traveling down the NSW coast, maybe I could pick up at Coffs & drop of at Port Macquarie if there is in these towns. 1
Lenehan Audio Posted August 7, 2017 Author Posted August 7, 2017 Ok Excellent , email me at mike@lenehanaudio.com.au and lets nut it out . Regards MikeSent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Guest Hensa Posted August 7, 2017 Posted August 7, 2017 @Nap250 - having seen first hand your outstanding handy-work on your kit speakers, these might be the natural progression! Then a GTG to compare them to your ML-1 Refs!
warweary Posted August 7, 2017 Posted August 7, 2017 I'm interested in hearing the ML speakers at home count me in.
Cardiiiii Posted August 7, 2017 Posted August 7, 2017 Also, forgive the silly question, is $1200 going to be retail pricing?
