Item: Kef Concerto Loudspeakers
Location: Adelaide
Price: $400
Item Condition: Outstanding for the age.
Reason for selling: No longer needed.
Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only
Extra Info:  These are factory-built units (not a Kef-kit). They were in museum condition when I bought them 16 years ago.  Apart from incurring a few marks on the top panels on my watch, they remain in great condition.  The boxes are rock-solid, with no sign of shrinkage or joint movement, and the walnut veneer is in great shape. The (legendary) drive units - B139, B110 and T27 - could pass for new.

The Concertos had a great following in their day. Although modern consensus is that the stock crossover can be significantly improved upon, they are still wonderfully musical, fun speakers that can really nail a reggae bass line.

Many thanks for the endorsements, guys.

Initial credit for their condition must go to the previous owner, who had them for about a quarter of a century.

I've had them in storage for most of the time, although they did a stint in my (then) teenage daughter's room along the way on the end of a sweet little Pioneer valve amp.

My plan was always to mount a new cross-over from Falcon or similar on the back panel and leave the front of the units intact -  just one of several projects that's clearly not going to happen before I lose what's left of my hearing or my marbles. Time to clear the decks of some things to which I've been hanging on for emotional rather than practical reasons.

Cheers,

Phil

I have the exact same set of speakers in the same condition and colour as yours. Just confirming that these are revision 2 speakers made from 1976 to 1977. The radiator is shaped more like a hexagon shaped driver (sharp corners) rather than the oval shaped driver (rounded corners) found on the revision 1 speakers.

The sensitivity on them is 90.7 dB at 8 ohm for 1 watt (2.83 volts) per 1 metre. They work great with low powered valve amps and need 14 watts or more power to sing their best at 102 dB using the Paul Joppa rule for SET amps.

Well then. A perfect match for my Leak Stereo 20 I keep meaning to put up for sale ;)

Thanks for that, xlr8or - looks like they're only about 38 years old after all.

Interesting thing is that anyone wanting to use them with a valve amp at the time would have been hard pressed to find a current-production one.

I have half a mind to drive to Adelaide (from Melbourne) and pick these up! My grandfather (who lived in Adelaide) built a pair of these, which I was mesmerised by as a kid. Unfortunately they were given to my uncle and who knows what happened to them....
