I got home today and noticed the dvd player was on, We hae a guest staying and didn't think much of it. I went to put a disk in it opened, closed and the OSD came up with messge "now reading"

It just stayed like that, I tried a few more disks and nothing changed it would openand close but not read the disk.

I pulled it out and it was piping hot. I think our guest in her wisdom left a disk in there on pause for hours. Bust she won't admit to anything THinking it might have overheated athough I have never heard of this happening to DVD players, i left it for an hour unplugged. Same thing happened. I am really pissed of that our GUEST!! has f##ked my DVD player and won't own up to what she has done.

Any Idea what may be wrong and why it would have gotten so hot.

Its a Rotel RDV995.

Many thanks

MY Sony DVD Player DVP735SD did exactly the same thing. I suspect it died from the heat coming off the amp underneath it. I just bought a cheapie for now and will get it looked at one day soon.

Unfortunately it happens..............but i dont know the extent of the damage yet,

If the unit is inside a cabinet without much ventilation then with many hours of continous use it's quite possible it has overheated. If it operates like most DVD/CD players the disc continues to spin at full speed while on pause so it is consuming almost max power all the time. This can cause higher than designed expansion of the printed circuit board tracks and solder joints resulting in dry joints and hairline fractures. If that's the problem then popping it open and re-soldering any joints that look a bit "abnormal" may fix the problem. Otherwise look for parts that are discoloured due to heat stress as these will most likely be damaged. As for the laser assembly that's beyond my current understanding. Perhaps someone else has some experience with overheating of the laser mechanisms and the likely problems this can cause??? Sounds like you have one house guest that you won't want coming back!! :-x

The amp underneath was off and there was about 50 mm and 19mm of solid pine between it and the player. I am guessing she tried to play a dvd and as she couldn't get it going (my g/f doesn't even know how to work it she just left it going)

I have only had it for almost a year, I pulled the top off and it looks OK. Not that I am an expert. Is it worth taking it back to the retailer and trying to make a warrenty claim?

As for the guest she refuses to help at all with cooking and cleaning and now this, She aslo broke a can opener today. If she didn't have fake boobs she would be out on her arse. She could at least tell me she tried to use the DVD player but I guess the look on my face was enough to scare her senseless.

No there not, I'm just trying to look on the positive side.

THe plot has thickened, My G/f asked her if she used the DVD player, She said no, I get accused of calling her friend a liar. I reply with well we'll go to the shop and tell them it turned itself on and burn't out.

I noticed this morning that the DVD remote was not in its draw, I say thats conclusive eveidense that she played with it yesterday.

Nice work detective GimmeHiFi

Is the unit still under warranty? If so then post pic of the fake boobs then take the DVD back to the the shop for warranty (in that order). Leaving a CD on pause shouldn't be enough to cause it to break even if it is on for a few hours. From what I understand it would just be the same stress as watching a few DVD's back to back.

I hope you didn't break any tamper seals when taking the top off. (Break all the tamper seals you want with the fakies!)

Productive as ever DodgyD

Might be under warranty, Something caused it to heat up, It was VERY hot when i pulled it from the rack to inspect. Hotter than the amp normaly gets after watching a DVD.

There must a be a reason a PS2 has a fan!! those crazy gamers will play nonstop for 18hrs.

unless u have a decent knowledge of the components within the DVD player, i would go with the warranty option and take it to the store where u purchased it from and hope for the best.....

.....as for us "crazy gamers" we also like to play xbox, which im sure u know how much that heats up:mrgreen:

Mate, you won't win the argument with the ladies (one on one they still win, let alone when they gang up on you).

Take it back and try for the warranty job.............after all it shouldn't die with normal use should it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am going back to lifestyle store tomorrow where i got it in about march last year. ROTEL should be able to handle a bit of abuse anyway I reckon.

The boss knows me there as I have spent lots of money and he said they'll look after me in the future. Hope they come to the party.

I will update as the situtation develops!!
