Stygian Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 As per suggestions in the Currently Spinning thread - sure, why not! Title says it all. I'll make an effort to at least keep my own sense of metal elitism out (won't deny I have that mindset at times ) But away we go! Saw this out of the corner of my eye at JB Hifi today - stopped in a hurry and managed to slip on my arse... damned slippery floors. $35? Hell yes! 45rpm remastered Master of Puppets on vinyl. Can't turn it up loud, because it'll wake up the rest of the people on my floor, which is quite unfortunate - a job for tomorrow First impression, though - the guitars have grunt. First few seconds didn't sound right, because I'm used to the original - but now it's much better. Vinyl quality is good - not much surface noise going on at all. Next up, and another new purchase I'm yet to listen to: Disturbed - Indestructible Their new release. 180g, 3 sides. I've not listened to Disturbed much before, so I'm going in with an open mind.
Dr X Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 Yay well done on the new thread Stygian! Let the metal flow dudes, OK that's just totaly dorky Let see what have I been listening to: Agalloch - Pale Folklore on the advice of some of you guys last week. It's pretty good. I've also listened to The Mantle which was some of you guys actually advised. Didn't think it was as good as PF but it may grow on me later. I don't really like the singers clean singing voice/style and he does this alot more on The Mantle. I like Pake Folklore becasue it's a bit more pacey too. Death - Human. Haven't listened to this one in a while and decided to get it out again. Chuck Shuldiner said this is not a record, this is revenge when it came out. Great Death Metal album with some progressive elements which were a bit freshat the time. Atheist - Unquestionable Presence. Known as technical/jazz death metal. Great musicanship but the lyrics are hard to understand, could have been a bit clearer and mixzed louder so you have to get the lyric book out for this one. I have Master Of Puppets (DCC 24K Gold Remaster). I wonder how it compares to the vinyl? Cheers. 1

Human is according to lots of people Death's best - while yes, I acknowledge it is a milestone in the music progression of Death, I'm of the opinion Symbolic is their best. One that I've ordered on vinyl, but I don't think it'll ever come in.. have been waiting for numerous months now That said, can't go past Individual Thought Patterns for production. Incredible, and I'm not sure why that approach wasn't taken for the others. Must purchase on vinyl sometime. Love the unconventional basslines on Unquestionable Presence, too. The remastered version of the CD was actually remastered properly, too! Re: the MoP 24k Gold release - I've got a rip of that, and to be quite honest, I've not noticed a huge difference between that and the original release - except for a huge volume increase across the board Whereas this vinyl, as I said, just sounds meatier.
Dr X Posted July 18, 2008 Posted July 18, 2008 My favourite Death is The Sound Of Perseverance but Symbolic is not far behind. The great thing about the last 4 Death albums is that they were all fairly Different. The first 3 were a bit mediocre but Chuck was a young lad still learning back then. Regarding the 24K DCC yeah it's not a huge improvement but I thought it sounded a bit thicker. It suffers from a tiny bit of dynamic compression in one small part according to Audacity.
Stygian Posted July 19, 2008 Author Posted July 19, 2008 The Grudge could be my favourite song ever. Tis a great album. I think I'll put that on now, in fact Apparently, apparently, the album is something different again if you listen to the songs in a different order! The order being: 6,7,5,8,4,9,13,1,12,2,11,3,10 by song number. I'm yet to do it, but hell - to begin an album with the Parabol/Parabola combo must some at least SOME merit
Stygian Posted July 19, 2008 Author Posted July 19, 2008 Dream Theater - Live at Budokan. The DVD release. Awesome viewing AND listening (pity it's only in AC3) - especially when James LaBrie isn't featuring An incredible performance. Their best recorded live performance, in my opinion. Watch out for the duel between Rudess and Portnoy in the middle of 'Beyond This Life'

Hell why not let Maynard mess with my mind a bit more.

Watch out for the duel between Rudess and Portnoy in the middle of 'Beyond This Life' I like Score more because Labrie's voice is in much better shape and there was a much better vibe on the Score night being a 20 years anniversary concert IMO . Cheers.

Better vibe? Sure. Better songlist? Not nearly That said, the inclusion of SDoIT is a plus in my books any day.
unclemack Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 haven't listened to my copy of MOP on vinyl yet but am looking forward to it. I have a Disturbed album and they are just too Nu-Metal for my liking. Perhaps they have moved on from that particular hell... Cheers M As per suggestions in the Currently Spinning thread - sure, why not! Title says it all. unclemack Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 Great Japanese Doom... and some US retro metal Cheers M 1
Guest yamaha_man Posted July 20, 2008 Posted July 20, 2008 Im currently listening to Danzig - Danzig III How The God's Kill Goatsnake - Goatsnake Vol. 1 Orange Goblin - Big Black Supersuckers - Sacrilicious Tad - 8 Way Santa Monster Magnet - Greatest Hits
Stygian Posted July 20, 2008 Author Posted July 20, 2008 What's on the fourth side, Stygian? A "Limited Edition art etching". Click for big.

Grizzly Posted July 21, 2008 Posted July 21, 2008 Im currently listening toDanzig - Danzig III How The God's Kill Goatsnake - Goatsnake Vol. 1 Orange Goblin - Big Black Supersuckers - Sacrilicious Tad - 8 Way Santa Monster Magnet - Greatest Hits Monster Magnet is good fun. Bought that one a few weeks back. My newest are 100 Thoughts of Violence - Kekal. Indonesian progressive/tech black metal. A little different but I do like it. And Requiem Mezzo Forte - Virgin Black. Haunting, soaring and gorgeous.
Stygian Posted July 22, 2008 Author Posted July 22, 2008 Currently have on Undertow, by Tool. I'd upload a cover like the rest but I'm far from sober (what a coincidence) - as such I don't think I'll put in the effort to do so. This is one of my favourites, and although the CD is both produced and mastered really very well, the vinyl still shits all over it. As it should.
Dr X Posted July 23, 2008 Posted July 23, 2008 I just found Tool Undertow and Aenima vinyl rip torrents...hmmm  Just listened to Opeth Blackwater Park. I've always thought that this is a totally overrated album and this listen did nothing to change that. Now listening to Watershed. I think it's considerably better than BP. Cheers.
Stygian Posted July 23, 2008 Author Posted July 23, 2008 I just found Tool Undertow and Aenima vinyl rip torrents...hmmm  If they are the 24bit/96kHz versions, they're well worth getting - I've only ever seen one vinyl rip of each album at that quality, and I believe that's all there is circulating. Aenima especially, because ... well, the vinyl itself is as rare as hens teeth - and very pricey to boot if you were to ever come across one being sold.

Aenima especially, because ... well, the vinyl itself is as rare as hens teeth - and very pricey to boot if you were to ever come across one being sold. I got Stinkfist, Sober and The Grudge. Unfortunately I couldn't say I was impressed, in fact they are inferior to the CD versions IMO. The bass is louder and more round and there is less detail overall. I did use my SB3 to play these so it's actually downsampling them to 24bit 48K because that's it's maximum. It was certainly worth a listen though. I reckon on a bright sounding system/room these might be a more enjoyable listen than the CD versions. Cheers.
Guest yamaha_man Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 Ministry - Sphinctour DVD. Highly recommended to be played loud enough for your ears to bleed!
Jake Posted July 25, 2008 Posted July 25, 2008 I can actually contribute to this thread  I mistakenly spun some Scottish Pirate Metal yesterday. Alestorm - Captain Morgan's Revenge All I can say is I think their drummer is a 120db metronome stuck on 200bpm. Id almost buy it just for the cover though.
Dr X Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 (edited) Anthrax - Persistence Of Time http://www1.cds.ne.jp/~mosh/disc-img/album/PersistenceOfTime.jpg Thought I'd get this thread rolling again with an old favourite of mine. Edited August 14, 2008 by Dr X 1 1
Grizzly Posted August 14, 2008 Posted August 14, 2008 Ah Anthrax. Great stuff that! Last night was brought to me by Nightwish- the makers of Once. Finnish "power metal" with plenty of soothing choral and orchestral arrangements.
