Metallica covers, probably not strictly metal but still heavy for string instruments and other added instruments, enjoyable!

The new Rhino HiFi version from original analog US tapes cut by Kevin Gray.

I don't have an OG copy to compare too, but I have the 2010 version which was also cut from original US analog tapes  by Ron McMasters.

This version has USA track listing but has the UK gatefold look. The centre label is Rhino HiFi...

The 2010 version also has USA track listing and follows the Warner USA release which was not gatefold and has the green Warner centre label.

Will prob do a B2B of them at some point.

Plenty of reviews and discussions out there at the moment between this new Rhino version and OG versions...mainly UK vertigo but a few USA Warner.

I caved so am waiting for my copy also as I prefer the US track listing with Wicked World opening up side B instead of Evil Woman.

Heard a comparison against an OG English first press on youtube and was very impressed by this new version. Was hoping I could have gotten away without this as $$ is bit tight but I knew id be kicking myself if I didn't and at this stage im not certain its going to get a bigger release than the limited numbers currently available.

I'm totally the same re the track listing.

I have the other version on cd, works well for me that way.

It's already asking silly money on discogs and eBay. I'm not sure they'll release any more copies, I think it was designed as ltd press, nice to have it for sure. K.Gray has a following no question plus so do Sabbath.

I actually did a bit of a side 1 B2B against my 2010 version.

I'll refrain from an opinion til yours arrives and see what your thoughts are too.

My Anno Domini box also arrived last week, spewing that doesn't have Eternal Idol as it's my fav Tony Martin release, but it's nice to have the others on LP now as I'd only ever owned them on cd.

Can't wait to spin them, I'm big fan of this very underrated era.

How coincidental, the only other version I have is the 2010 Rhino release that you have.

I think the new version is better, more alive and clearer, the volume levels are slightly different so it’s a bit hard to match, really enjoying the new release.

Im enjoying it also,  as you said it's clearer, and overall a very decent mix....my only gripe is that I'd like more bass in it. I like thump, my taste probably isn't an audiophile type mix.....maybe that's why it doesn't have quite the depth and thump I like but does have air and good separation, just for me needs a bit more heft.

Not sure if it is just me but I did find the bass got better (increased) toward the end of side 1 and all of side 2. Maybe I was imagining things too.

I will say that I do really enjoy the 2010 version too.

Would love a swirl or USA version but at the prices people ask it is not likely I'll have one any time soon.

All that said, I am really glad I have this Kevin Gray version, it's really airy and so quiet, I reckon I'll tinker a bit with the bass dial on next listen though and just thicken it all up a bit to taste and hopefully it doesn't take away to much of the good stuff it offers now.

I still know people waiting for theirs, Rhino must be packing these daily at the moment.

Worth the wait though, arrived safely and dead flat.

I agree with everything you have said, and I would like more lower end also, but I think it is a bit of trying to stay true to the original recording and the expected sound of the time, just give it to us as clear and well balanced as you can, which I think has been achieved.

Very true, when looking at it that way (which admittedly I hadn't) you're absolutely right.

In that respect it's superb and the goal will have been comfortably met.

Destruction - Mad Butcher / Eternal Devastation

Wow this brings back memories, was the very first CD I purchased at a whopping $35 from Pipe Imported Records (sadly now a long gone metal store in Melbourne) which back then could almost buy you 2 albums on vinyl. Still have it somewhere...Great stuff!

Loved that little store, it was awesome. Later it was known as Extreme Aggression. Run by a guy named Daniel.

By the earlier and certainly mid 90s it was pretty much exclusively a black metal store. I remember buying Immortal "Battles in the North" and a few other releases when they came out from there.

Funny thing, a couple of kids came in with PanterA t-shirts on and Daniel was very unimpressed with them hahaha.

He was really buying in on the no mosh black metal grimness at that time, but prior to that had lots of good thrash and emerging death metal.

I use to do the rounds, Metal For Melbourne, Smoke Dreams, Batman Records, Pipe Imported/Extreme Aggression, then across the road was Missing Link then take the walk up to Collectors Corner when it was up top of Swanston St, up near the old Museum Station area - now known as Melbourne Central.

Such awesome times.

I'd save up some pocket money, go buy a record or tape or two then come home and you would cherish that purchase, no streaming, no youtube, you'd have to save up and make a choice of what to buy.  Unlike now where you can listen to dozens of new releases in a day and give them minutes of your time and move on. Back then you would listen and listen and listen.  Its probably why we still enjoy physical media so much.

Destruction first tour here back in maybe 01 or 02 I think it was, I was fortunate to meet them all pre gig and post gig at the Espy. They are my fav of the German 3. I could not though pry the CD from the Drummer Marc, who was awesome but of course did not play on these releases!

He ended up signing all my stuff basically haha.

Nevermind, Schmier and Mike did too.

Started on the new Rhino release and in my humble opinion if you got this there's ZERO need to chase down an elusive Vertigo OG press as its every bit as good (and in some places beats it hands down)

Never understood why some in the audio community keeps saying this album never sounded good saying it was rushed and poorly recorded but I beg to differ as ive always held it up as one of my reference albums as its so well produced with an energetic live sound and every instrument is so clearly defined. I also never noticed the apparent lack of bass others have commented on but now its been said yeah I can understand some might find it lacking but its still "all there" and I liken it to an old movie in that whilst not perfect the sound production does give it an old horror eerie kinda vibe.

As for comparisons the Rhino like the Vertigo excel in the top end making it a cymbal lovers dream but what caught me out instantly was how much clearer Ozzy's vocals are. Its also slightly more open and airy sounding bit like looking through a slightly hazy windscreen and not noticing anything abnormal until you clean it and its like wow!

Also as expected the noise floor is also better as even though id consider my Vertigo pressing in NM condition it still was just a regular non audiophile press in its day so isnt nearly as silent in the groove as this release so overall this will be my go to press in the future. Dunno if id part with the Vertigo but if I did id be very happy with just this.

Producer Rodger Bain certainly knew what he was doing on the first 3 Sabbath albums as well as early Budgie and Priest.  Those albums still sound amazing.
