classic live Rush.

*sniff*

Seeing this makes me yearn to play "Hemispheres" and "Permanent Waves", but I only have these on vinyl and I don't have a turny table thingy.

I used to have "Exit Stage Left" on vinyl as well. Dunno if I still do, as I really wasn't that impressed with it. Even more bass-shy than the original albums, and the songs were pretty much identical to the studio version anyway. I might have offloaded it.

At least I have "A Farewell To Kings" on CD ... might just queue it up now.

Not spinning, but I heard the new AC/DC album on MMM at work today and I'll buy it next week. I really liked it and the title track, Black Ice, is sorta funky sounding in a metal way.

Hey all, I am always on the lookout to expand my music collection and was hoping you people might be able to steer me on to some bands that I don't know about.

Firstly,I am 42 yrs young and to give you some idea of my music tastes, I would have to say Judas Priest are my favourite all time band. Greenday[especially the older stuff] comes in at 2nd spot and yes,I know they're not metal.

To name a few others: Accept, Rammstein,Motley Crue and..................................Joan Armatrading. I can hear the laughter now and i am only semi joking,I do have a couple of albums of hers which are sensational but enough about her!!.

So,I am not into speed metal or death.I read a while ago about Black Label Society and a few were recommending it, so I went out and bought one of their dvd's but it didn't appeal at all.Is there anything out there which may be heavy and still melodic?

Give Nightwish a go- its Finnish "symphonic power metal" to coin a phrase. What I know is that it is BIG and erm... majestic. Mostly female vocals but don't let that put you off.

If you like Priest I would recommend Black Sabbath (start with Paranoid) and Iron Maiden (start with Powerslave) a listen.

Cheers.

Yeah,I have a couple of Maiden albums but they just don't do it for me anymore. Same with Sabbath.

Actually,I can't say Priest's new album[Nostradamus] does it for me either but I give them full marks for trying something different.

I might look in to Nightwish-sounds interesting!

Thanks and keep em comin!

Geoff, you're probably right that, overall, it wasn't a great album. But I just love side 4 of the vinyl version with "Freewill", "Tom Sawyer" & "La Villa Strangiato".

Jeffro, Lacuna Coil are another female fronted band who have more of a melodic and less of a power/syphonic sound than Nightwish.

Black Majesty are a melodic/progressive powermetal band out of Melbourne, who I rate very highly.

Opeth are one of my favourite bands, that play their own brand of progressive death metal. It's not traditional blastbeat death metal, so if you're open minded, I really recommend them.

Otherwise the melodeath bands don't actually sound anything like traditional death metal either. Dark Tranquillity's Gallery or In Flames' Jester Race are good starting points.

Or give progressive metal a try, with Images and Words or Scenes from a Memory by Dream Theater.

Sadus-sib.jpg

Sadus - Swallowed in Black

Oldschool American thrash metal. Steve Digiorgio, the bassist and vocalist, is an absolute beast, playing a 5 string fretless bass faster than pretty much any other finger-picker I've heard in metal. Highly recommended!

Leavescars.jpg

Dark Angel - Leave Scars

More oldschool American thrash. Probably overall not as good or as hard and fast as Sadus. But still very good stuff.

If you want to hear Sabbath songs live then this is it. It's the best "Black Sabbath" Live album. Very impressive recording.

Dropped in Opeths' Watershed last night for a bit of a twirl after work. But she walked in 10 mins later so it was all over. Poo

Not much metal action here lately... let's try to remedy that.

Some astonishing what I would call "progressive thrash" for want of a better term. Great assertive political lyrics and many layered but also simple 2xguitar/bass/doublekickdrum arrangement. A stirring Saturday in!

Only LOG album I have is Ashes Of The Wake, not bad.

I've gotten into Meshuggah lately.

Listening to their early albums:

Contradictions Collapse

None

Destroy Erase Improve

Chaosphere

As per suggestions in the Currently Spinning thread - sure, why not! Title says it all. I'll make an effort to at least keep my own sense of metal elitism out (won't deny I have that mindset at times :D ) But away we go!

Saw this out of the corner of my eye at JB Hifi today - stopped in a hurry and managed to slip on my arse... damned slippery floors. $35? Hell yes!

45rpm remastered Master of Puppets on vinyl.

masterofpuppets.jpg

Can't turn it up loud, because it'll wake up the rest of the people on my floor, which is quite unfortunate - a job for tomorrow :P First impression, though - the guitars have grunt. First few seconds didn't sound right, because I'm used to the original - but now it's much better. Vinyl quality is good - not much surface noise going on at all.

Next up, and another new purchase I'm yet to listen to:

Disturbed - Indestructible

Their new release.

indestructible.jpg

180g, 3 sides. I've not listened to Disturbed much before, so I'm going in with an open mind.

Hi,

I saw the same Metallica album in Disck Smith Powerhouse in Parramatta NSW

Thing is, I'm sure they had Ride The Lightning and Justice too.

BTW, i have the original Kill em all - Direct Metal Masters 45rpm....Woohoo!

Cave-dark, thunderous, devastating and ponderous but airy and beautiful. Lots of input from the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra. One of Adelaides' best bands. (IMO IMO IMO IMO....:))

I sold my whole metal vinyl collection (be worth a fortune now) after i overdosed on it, and discovered 'The Stooges' which (still to this day) changed everything as far as my music taste. I did keep some 'Death' vinyl, and some early 'Celtic Frost' though, plus some 'Venom', 'Exodus's' first album and some early 'Metallica', 'Voivod', probably some others that skip my mind right now. The albums i kept were (to me) the bands that helped invent metal. I have all the 'Black Sabbath' albums with Ozzy. I do REALLY dig 'TAD' though, great band and heavy as it gets (I reckon) but not really a metal band?. I also checked out 'Celtic Frosts' latest release (can't remember what it's called), now that's a bloody heavy album what a great effort after such a massive break. Check it out.

Great album with great songs, just doesn't have the original band:mad:. Ozzy rules though.

I may a bit off topic with this remark, seeing as it is not 'currently spinning', but this seemed as good a place as any to say this.

I was browsing through JB-HiFi the other day, and came across some CDs in the heavy metal rack with a card saying 'Anal Vomit'. Well, I'm assuming this is the name of a band (although one should probably never assume these things, I suppose it could be a warning, like those signs in shopping centres that say 'wet floor'). I dunno, but for some reason I just find this rather funny. Seems very 'Spinal Tap' to me, calling a band 'Anal Vomit'. I didn't have a listen to their CDs, but I imagine the music lives up to the name.

Sorry, guys, but I just can't take the names of some of these bands seriously.

Hmm, must be time to play some Black Sabbath now.

Posted

It's nothing more than a juvenile attempt to be revolting and garner attention thus rather than possess actual musical talent.

That being said I am something of a headbanger and have found that some bands who have questionable names actually hold some interest for me (Cannibal Corpse for one).

Posted

i think some names are meant to be a piss take like Spinal Tap

Cradle of Filth have said that they dont take the whole black metal thing seriously, i guess for alot of bands its just an image thing

bloodbath is another example, its just a bunch of current metal artists who wanted to jam with some old school death metal, im sure they dont endorse the killing of hundreds to create a 'bloodbath'

youve gotta laugh at some of these names

np Old Mans Child - The Pagan Prosperity

G'day,

Seems very 'Spinal Tap' to me, calling a band 'Anal Vomit'.

While 'Anal Vomit' is a fine metal band name, it does seem rather derivative. It does not quite have the charm, wit and elegance of the seminal punk band 'Anal C*nt'.

I would recommend a google but you can imagine the kind of results you'll get ...

Yeah... Metal, unfortunately, has its share of 'scene' bands, and general douches who don't have a lick of musical talent. Anyway, on to the good stuff...

Bear, I've hard Requiem-Fortissimo. I found it quite enjoyable. They opened for Opeth here last year, but I can't say I enjoyed their stage act that much. I highly, highly recommend

cover_485721122007.jpg

Wolves in the Throne Room - Two Hunters. It's classified as black metal, but it's really just very atmospheric metal like Virgin Black.

My two latest highlights:

ITPCover.jpg

Death - Individual Thought Patterns

Amazing album. One of the last albums by Death, and the first of theirs I've heard. Death's sound is more a derivation of thrash than the blastbeating that's more associated with the genre today, and by this point, they've got some prog elements going on as well. Fantastic, fantastic album.

melodic20061227170829_0.46694.jpg

Testament - The Gathering

The heaviest release by golden age thrash band Testament. With Dave Lombardo manning the drums and Steve Digiorgio on the bass, the rythm section is just a monster, driving this album really hard. Highly recommended thrash.
