Dr X Posted January 9, 2009 Posted January 9, 2009 Hi PWilson I have all of Death's albums. Human, Individual Thought Patterns, Symbolic, and The Sound Of Perseverance are the standouts, these are the last 4. All of them are so so good. The Sound Of Perseverance is my personal favourite. IMO it's up there with Master Of Puppets. Like you alluded to, they really don't sound like Death Metal of today. I think of them as more of a Progressive Thrash band during their late era although their early albums were definitely old school Death Metal. RIP Chuck Schuldiner.
Dr X Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 (edited) After one listen to Carcuss - Heartwork...sounds like some pretty good Thrash\Death metal to me. Edited January 30, 2009 by Dr X
PWilson Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 Intriguing stuff. I had a bit more of a read about Death after reading your post Dr X. Does sound like Chuck shifted the musical style quite a bit. I'm definitely going to get a hold of more of their stuff, both early and late. ITP continues to grow in my standing as I listen to it. I'll make Sound of Perseverence a priority to find. RIP Chuck indeed. He appears to have been one of the few true gentlemen in our musical genre.
Dr X Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 (edited) One warning about The Sound Of Perseverance, the vocal style is a high pitched kinda black metal. I know some people who don't like it but I do. I don't usually like the black metal vocal sound much. Chuck changed his vocal style quite a bit over time. If you really like ITP then I'd recommend you go for Human next. You won't be disappointed. Edited January 30, 2009 by Dr X

All concerts are archived on the website - there's some other interesting concerts there as well. Only problem is you need a good internet connection as there can be quite a bit of buffering.
unclemack Posted January 30, 2009 Posted January 30, 2009 Church of Misery: master of Brutality CD, Volume one LP and Dennis Nielsen vinyl EP. Japanese Doom at it's zenith. Solace hammerhead EP (vinyl) Always Room for more Doom though! cheers M

I actually much prefer them to the traditional brootal DM grunting. Sadly, I don't have much luck finding discs here. I think it's a case of picking stuff up as it becomes available somewhere (well... or I could visit the torrent factory). But I definitely think I'll explore both ways (earlier and later work). Church of Misery: master of Brutality CD, Volume one LP and Dennis Nielsen vinyl EP. Japanese Doom at it's zenith. Solace hammerhead EP (vinyl) Doom, eh? A subgenre I haven't explored yet. I reckon it's something that would appeal to me, though.
Stygian Posted February 14, 2009 Author Posted February 14, 2009 Now that I've got Death's discography on vinyl, I'll have to say that The Sound of Perseverance is my favourite, by far. The technicality of it is what makes me love it so much. Next to that would be Symbolic, and then Human followed by ITP. Pity the bass in the last two wasn't higher up in the mix - Steve DiGorgio is godlike on the bass. A much better example of his abilities can be heard on Control Denied - The Fragile Art of Existence, Chuck's side-project. Powermetal vocals. Very good.
Dr X Posted February 14, 2009 Posted February 14, 2009 Hello, I'm pretty sure Steve DiGorgio didn't play bass on Symbolic and Perseverance (my favorite too). I've got The Fragile Art of Existence and yes it's good too.

I've been exploring the Doom/Drone/Stoner genre for a while and have found some wonderful stuff out there. Try COM (master of Brutality), Solace (13 or Further) and Orange Goblin, Trouble and Penance. Oh, almost forgot, Place of Skulls...any of their albums are great! Cheers M

PWilson Posted February 16, 2009 Posted February 16, 2009 Cheers for the recc's, UM. I'll definitely look out for them. I picked up Death's debut, Scream Bloody Gore. Definitely different stylistically to Individual Thought Patterns. Less technical/progressive. But still infinitely preferable to blastbeating brutal death, with a lot more flow to the music, and still very legible vocals. Then some dirty sod came along and bought all the other Death albums I had my eyes on at the one shop that sells them here :/. Digiorgio is awesome, and yes, the Control Denied album is something else I've got on the wishlist. I heard the free samples off Digiorgio's website, and they're quite impressive. Another album I picked up recently is Necrophagist - Epitaph. It's tech death, and my word it's good. Vocals are in a brootal style, but I much prefer it to Suffocation's vocals. But the bassist, OMG. He's fantastic.

Dr X Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 What sort of words Doc? OK here are some words, (Muhammed Suicmez vocalist and guitarist of Necrophagist) is the Jimi Hendrix of Death Metal!
Grizzly Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 OK here are some words, (Muhammed Suicmez vocalist and guitarist of Necrophagist) is the Jimi Hendrix of Death Metal! Perhaps the Slava Grigoryan/Nat King Cole of death metal?!! Muhammed... not a name you would normally associate with this style of self expression. Especially as the name pretty much means corpse eater. But then again if you're not vegetarian then.... Been listening to this- Does it classify as metal? Who knows. Some people say it does.
greenhornet Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 sweet choice for master of puppets, i have heard ajfa sounds great too. ( dont get dm though it still clips even on record lol )
Iano Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 Just did a full listen of Metallica's latest - Death Magnetic. Yeah they returned to their roots, but to me the album is still a bit inconsistant. Some of the tracks I found very boring...
Soultone Posted February 18, 2009 Posted February 18, 2009 OK here are some words, (Muhammed Suicmez vocalist and guitarist of Necrophagist) is the Jimi Hendrix of Death Metal! Muhammed Suicmez is over rated imo. The songs are boring and go nowhere, there are times to play lots of notes and there are times when you dont. Wish bands would work this out.

Wish bands would work this out. Fair enough, but i thought i heard a few slow passages as well. No one artist can be everything to everybody, that's why people generally listen to many.
PWilson Posted February 19, 2009 Posted February 19, 2009 Aye. I've been looking into tech death and brutal death for a little bit, and for me, Necrophagist are one of the few bands that do it well with musicality. But everyone has their own version of what's good and what's not. X, you might also want to check out Origin if you liked the Necrophagist. They were probably even better with their instruments, though I tend to prefer Necrophagist's style. FNM rock! Dunno that I'd call them metal, but that shouldn't dissuade anyone from listening to them!
