Dr X Posted February 20, 2009 Posted February 20, 2009 Listened to some Origin, nothing that I really haven't heard before. Necrophagist are alot more unique IMO. For all out brutal technical death metal this is still my benchmark: Cryptopsy - None So Vile Love the jazzy drumming!
rueffy Posted February 28, 2009 Posted February 28, 2009 Any of your guys like Dark New Day, dunno how well they fit in too your definition of metal, but I find some of there riffs insane, and his singing is powerful, a few of there songs blow my mind and my stereo.
PWilson Posted March 4, 2009 Posted March 4, 2009 So I've been spending the last week and a half with Symbolic and The Sound of Perseverence.... TBH, I haven't had Symbolic in the player long enough to give an honest opinion (though on initial impression it doesn't hit the heights of ITP). But SoP has been in constant rotation, and I love it. The thrashy/techy riffs, the new black metal voice, the higher tempo drumming... it's awesome. Some of you folks may be interested to know there are some serious bands touring. Death Angel and Armored Saint are hitting Perth on the 15th of March Necrophagist, Aborted and Dying Fetus are hitting perth the next day, 16th March.

hired goon Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 G'day, A bit of a Dream Theater day today: Dream Theater - "A Change Of Seasons" (well, just the 23 minute title track; skipped the covers that follow) Dream Theater - "Metropolis Pt2: Scenes From A Memory" Dream Theater - "Train Of Thought" -- bit heavier than other DT albums; had the 10 min instrumental "Stream Of Consciousness" on repeat for a while. Dream Theater - "Octavarium" -- mainly for the 24min title track at the end. --Geoff
Soultone Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 All very good albums minus "A Change Of Seasons", never liked it.
Soultone Posted March 6, 2009 Posted March 6, 2009 Been listening to Nine Inch Nails, Ghosts and The Slip and a couple of the more recent remix ep's. Outstanding.
patjoy Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 G'day,A bit of a Dream Theater day today: Dream Theater - "A Change Of Seasons" (well, just the 23 minute title track; skipped the covers that follow) Dream Theater - "Metropolis Pt2: Scenes From A Memory" Dream Theater - "Train Of Thought" -- bit heavier than other DT albums; had the 10 min instrumental "Stream Of Consciousness" on repeat for a while. I don't really have a favourite cd of theirs - rather I love certain songs from a number of their cds. IMO their strength is performing live and their musicianship. Really enjoy watching their dvds.
Soultone Posted March 7, 2009 Posted March 7, 2009 For those interested, Steven Wilson - Insurgents album has been released locally with the 5.1 DVD-A as a bonus disc. Do yourself a favor.
gz76 Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 Been listening to Nine Inch Nails, Ghosts and The Slip and a couple of the more recent remix ep's. Outstanding. Huge fan of NIN here since the early days. Have just about everything on CD and LP! Did anyone catch them at Soundwave? What an awesome gig -- I loved the sound in an open air environment. Generally speaking, I have very diverse tastes in music, however I do have a particular love of metal. Favourite bands that I'm spinning at the moment would have to be Red Sparowes, and Nadja. Rosetta, Cult of Luna, ISIS, Jesu, Mouth of the Architect, and Boris have also been getting a bit of a workout lately.
unclemack Posted March 8, 2009 Posted March 8, 2009 Featuring the best cover of Voodoo Chile I've ever heard.
PWilson Posted March 9, 2009 Posted March 9, 2009 G'day,A bit of a Dream Theater day today: Dream Theater - "A Change Of Seasons" (well, just the 23 minute title track; skipped the covers that follow) Dream Theater - "Metropolis Pt2: Scenes From A Memory" Dream Theater - "Train Of Thought" -- bit heavier than other DT albums; had the 10 min instrumental "Stream Of Consciousness" on repeat for a while. Dream Theater - "Octavarium" -- mainly for the 24min title track at the end. --Geoff A Change of Seasons rocks my socks. First DT I ever listened to, and it blew me away. Metropolis is my favourite DT album bar none. I always try and make sure I have a spare hour, so I can play the whole album through. I'm a big fan of Endless Sacrifice as well as Stream. These Walls of Octavarium is another favourite. It's the first song that made me really sit up and pay attention to drumming. Portnoy is fantastic on this song. Overall one of my favourites of the later albums.
PWilson Posted March 17, 2009 Posted March 17, 2009 Went and saw the death metal gig last night. Necrophagist are even more awesome on the stage. They're a very tight unit. Guitar work, drumming, basswork, all exceptional. Dying Fetus were also very good, despite my initial stereotyping. Good techdeath style with great riffs.
unclemack Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 I'm pretty new to the Black metal genre so I decided to give this a whirl. Seeing them Sunday so trying to get my head around some of their stuff.
Stygian Posted March 18, 2009 Author Posted March 18, 2009 I'm pretty new to the Black metal genre so I decided to give this a whirl. Seeing them Sunday so trying to get my head around some of their stuff. If you can get around the vocals (just somewhat of an acquired taste) I recommend Det Som Engang Var, by Burzum. Just one of the many quintessential black metal albums to listen to. Hell, I may just put it on myself shortly!
PWilson Posted March 19, 2009 Posted March 19, 2009 Also The Somberlain and Storm of the Light's Bane, by Dissection. I'll have to listen to some Burzum. I hear them (him) spoken of quite highly often.
Itsmoi Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 If anyone is interested, a complete track to listen to from the new upcoming Heaven and Hell (Black sabbath) album on this site. Click the player about halfway down the page. Loving it and looking forward to the new album next month.. http://www.noisecreep.com/2009/03/24/heaven-and-hell-bible-black-song-premiere/
Grizzly Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 Catchy riffs, haunting melodies, powerful bass, delicate passages, strong vocals (including, but in no way limited to, the ubiquitous, but very relevant growling delivery that Mikael does sooo well) make this a great album. Takes some careful listening to get the best from it though. Steve Wilsons' production is excellent as well and really seems to help bring out the talent in Opeth and let it shine.

I struggle to get into the growling vocal songs of Opeth and the like - I'm probably too entrenched in the classic rock era. However, I love Damnation by Opeth. It's melodic, dark and hypnotic and without the signature growl. 1

Genuine question: Do you have much experience with the earlier albums? Different people have different tastes, but for me, the magic really happened in the Orchid-Still Life era, and Steve Wilson's meddlings watered down what used to be a fantastic prog-death band.

No not yet. But hopefully will be getting into those soon. Interesting viewpoint, one that I will be keen to see what I can determine. Cheers:)
Dr X Posted April 6, 2009 Posted April 6, 2009 Still Life is my favourite Opeth by far. It would be in my top 10 best metal albums.
PWilson Posted April 7, 2009 Posted April 7, 2009 Blasphemer! Muahaha! Hey, I just tells it like I sees it In all seriousness though, I could almost cry at what happened to Opeth given how much I love their death metal stuff. No not yet. But hopefully will be getting into those soon. Interesting viewpoint, one that I will be keen to see what I can determine. Cheers:) As I said, different strokes for different folks, and it may well be that you'll like their newer stuff better. The old stuff is some great death metal with fantastic melodies and time changes. Morningrise is a personal favourite.
