patjoy Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 Been listening to Riverside's live album - excellent.
likwidsh0k Posted May 19, 2009 Posted May 19, 2009 I struggle to get into the growling vocal songs of Opeth and the like - I'm probably too entrenched in the classic rock era. However, I love Damnation by Opeth. It's melodic, dark and hypnotic and without the signature growl. Me too, but must admit that the contrast of melodic and metal vocals is what grabbed me first time I heard Resurrection and one of the reasons I really like Fear Factory. Think its the very eevil growl I find a bit much. Time to revive this thread with some morning METAL.. big fan of NIN, so start with some industrial metal and first heard the title track in the old manga movie intros.
patjoy Posted May 25, 2009 Posted May 25, 2009 Looks like the cover songs that are going to be part of Dream Theater's 3 disc Ltd Edition new album "Black Clouds & Silver Linings" are: 1. "Stargazer," Rainbow 2. "Tenement Funster/Flick of the Wrist/Lily of the Valley," Queen 3. "Odyssey," Dixie Dregs 4. "Take Your Fingers From My Hair," Zebra 5. "Larks' Tongues In Aspic, Part 2," King Crimson 6. "To Tame A Land," Iron Maiden
ICEWOLF Posted July 31, 2009 Posted July 31, 2009 (edited) currently listening to Bruce Dickinson - The Chemical Wedding but been spinning alot of Ayreon lately. Kinda been a bit obsessive with Ayreon actually, i always liked the human equation but since i got new speakers i cant seem to stop listening to Into the Electric Castle and 01011001. Might put some old Black Sabbath on this afternoon Just got my screamfest tickets! Anyone else on here going? Edited July 31, 2009 by ICEWOLF

ICEWOLF Posted August 1, 2009 Posted August 1, 2009 today is a day for much opeth. starting at orchid and working my way forward
Volunteer sir sanders zingmore Posted August 1, 2009 Volunteer Posted August 1, 2009 If you like Priest I would recommend Black Sabbath (start with Paranoid) and Iron Maiden (start with Powerslave) a listen.Cheers. Actually, I would stop with Powerslave. It's a cliche but Maiden's earlier stuff is much better. Did anyone see Di'Anno performing recently... awesome On that note Dr X are you gonna see Queensryche (I can't wait)
sligoriverblues Posted August 1, 2009 Posted August 1, 2009 Celtic Frost - To Mega Therion (Noise Records LP) AMG The bombastic "Innocence and Wrath" starts To Mega Therion off on just the appropriate note -- Wagnerian horn lines, booming drums, and a slow crunch toward apocalypse. Nobody can say Tom Warrior and his merry men don't know how to make the end of the world sound appropriately dramatic. With that setting the tone, it's into the maddeningly wild and woolly Celtic Frost universe full bore, Warrior roaring out his vocals with glee and a wicked smile while never resorting to self-parodic castrato wails. "The Usurper" alone is worth the price of admission, an awesome display of Warrior's knack around brute power and unexpectedly memorable riffs. It isn't so much headbanging as body-slamming that Celtic Frost are after here. While there's not a lot of variety throughout Therion -- everything is mostly as already indicated, big, loud, and invoking death and storm clouds conjured up by pagan gods -- what does crop up outside the formula makes a good experience even better. Mostly that's got to do with the subtle touches the band buries in the mix -- wailing noises, chanting choirs, and more than once an actual sense of space and echo, like the group is really thundering down from the Alps. The contrast of a brief operatic aria and groaning demon voice behind Warrior on "Circle of the Tyrants," right before leading into a mind-blowingly powerful full-on band assault, is one such prime moment. Other prime cuts in general include the perfectly titled "Dawn of Megiddo" -- can't get any better than that, really! -- the shadowy instrumental mood-out "Tears in a Prophet's Dream," and "Eternal Summer," which makes such a prospect seem like the last thing on earth one would want. Ending on another prime note, the hyperdramatic "Necromantical Screams," To Mega Therion is and remains death metal at its finest.
likwidsh0k Posted August 2, 2009 Posted August 2, 2009 I saw The Hurt Locker recently and found Ministry in the credits so picked up a couple of their recent albums... ^^ Doesn't really sound like the old Ministry I knew, but this does vv and ROCKS!!
Dr X Posted August 2, 2009 Posted August 2, 2009 On that note Dr X are you gonna see Queensryche (I can't wait) Nope, many miles away up here. Hope it's a good night for you. Currently Spinning: ------------------- Dissection - The Somberlain and Storm Of Light's Bane...Simply the best black metal I have ever heard...if you would call it that. Really intense dark stuff! Iced Earth - Burnt Offerings and Something Wicked Comes This Way. Enjoying this band more I thought I would. Blind Guardian - Imaginations From The Other Side. Great uplifting stuff, especially after listening to Dissection Artillery - By Inheritance. Thrash metal kicks. At The Gates - The Red In The Sky Is Ours. I've never heard violins in Death Metal before. Cheers.
jkn Posted August 2, 2009 Posted August 2, 2009 Hi Icewolf Just wondering if you have Ayreon –Human Equation album (2004)? It is my favorite. There is also new album coming up from Ayreon call Guilt Machine. Hi whatmough Do you know if Queensryche playing at Brisbane?
Guest Neil Posted August 2, 2009 Posted August 2, 2009 At The Gates - The Red In The Sky Is Ours. I've never heard violins in Death Metal before. You should most definitely check out My Dying Bride then, especially the early stuff, slow doominess mixed with fast death metalness!
Grizzly Posted August 2, 2009 Posted August 2, 2009 (edited) You should most definitely check out My Dying Bride then, especially the early stuff, slow doominess mixed with fast death metalness! Also some Australian offerings- Virgin Black (Adelaide) and Paramaecium (Melbourne). Though they very rarely do the fastdeathmetalness. Add to that Korpiklaani, Finntroll and Eluveitie. They add things like hurdy gurdy, recorder, accordion and bodhran as well. Edited August 2, 2009 by thebigsteamythin
Guest Neil Posted August 2, 2009 Posted August 2, 2009 Yes Paramaecium are cool, must dig them out. For cool folkiness try Aeternus' earlier albums like Beyond the Wandering Moon and And So the Night Became... more black metalish, but not really screechy vokills...
Grizzly Posted August 3, 2009 Posted August 3, 2009 Tarja Turunens' swansong (at least with Nightwish). Wunderbar!

Guest ashes79 Posted August 7, 2009 Posted August 7, 2009 Picked this up in Hollywood (Amoeba Records) last year along with a bunch of other lp's. Didn't have a record player at the time, but have since invested in a little Project Debut to get me started. Can't believe how much better the drums and bass lines sound compared to CD..
jkn Posted August 9, 2009 Posted August 9, 2009 Queensryche is playing at the HI-FI bar -West End Brisbane Saturday 29 August 8 PM http://www.thehifi.com.au/events/7461/ Is anyone coming?
Grizzly Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 Home early from Jury Duty. I'm the only one here, so why not give it a few berries? This is a little black influenced roaring thrash/death from Finland.
mondie Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 No idea if this is classified as metal, heavy rock or whatever but l am really enjoying this album. in fact l have been playing most of my old Dio stuff lately when in the mood. 1
Adam Posted September 15, 2009 Posted September 15, 2009 Having a listen to 8 Foot Sativa. Who are from NZ, who I saw in 03, but forgot about for 5 years....and they're pretty good.
Grizzly Posted September 16, 2009 Posted September 16, 2009 "An Ode To Woe" The masters of doom, live in Amsterdam. Awesome performance, the mix lets it down slightly, but still VERY good.
