Hey all, please direct me elsewhere if needed.

But I figured being a vintage sansui thread, would provide the best advice.

I think it's nearly time for my Sansui b2101 to have another service and may be a recap, it seems to be sounding a little "off" of late maybe starting to sound kind of blurred or muddy, not quite right??

I'm  going to be taking it to tech to give it a going over but if it does need capacitors replaced, what should i look for in terms of of suitability and life span.

I suppose in order to keep in with this thread ill need to take some nudes after a recap and service.

Thanks in advance,

Mike.

If you haven't seen this yet you may want to have a look.

$200 for an A7 is fine you won't get what the bigger more advanced models do but for that money you can't complain.

thanks for response & website info... I've also got my eye on a 555a that's on ebay for $535  but I've been told by a mate that it seems expensive as he paid around $350 a couple of years back... supply & demand I suppose...

They rarely go down and a couple of years back you may have been able to get one for $350 but a minty one in good cosmetic condition and that's serviced and ready to go is well worth 5 hunge.

Yep they do go up with inflation and the mere fact they aren’t made anymore and they were quality gear just means their value stays high.

Mike,

I still use and recommend Panasonic FC, FM and FR series, along with Nichicon PW and HE series, and sometimes the United Chemicon KZE or similar. All are long life, high temp, low ESR caps that are superior to the originals.

If you were ultra-keen, you could throw Elna Silmic II caps everywhere (this is what Sansui did with the upper-end late model amps, albeit the original Silmic model and the Silmic Alpha Super Gold). These aren't high temp caps, but I've used them extensively in a few amps and did like the results.

Id say $350 for a good working one is a very fair price. I sold mine for $500 2 years ago
If interested im selling off most of my sansui stuff which includes 2 x AU-222 -1 fully restored

I thought I might post one of my most fortuitous hifi purchases- bought at a very good price due to my partner’s love of cricket on the ABC, but subsequently appreciated for its fantastic delivery of FM radio.

So i will lay this one clearly at the feet of @Cafad spurred on by his wonderful reviews of the alphas i thought i had better find myself one. Unfortunately missed  out on an 907 MRX a few weeks before so the 907 DR it would be then. A few chips here and there though nothing that can't be fixed but the clincher for me  is stamped on the back  230 volts so no step down. Its fresh out the shipping box and i must say it was the best packed piece of gear i have ever received she's dusty and a little bit dirty and omg she is heavy. It was bought from a Polish builder in London who is part of that Polish sansui cult in Europe so he made sure it would survive the journey.

And a special thank you to @Cafad for his advice on the purchase.

You bought it!  Great stuff.  The Eastern European Sansui Cult is a strong one.

And a 230 volt unit, that's a serious rarity.  I have heard that only 200 of the 230 Volt 907MRX's were made but I can't say I've seen or heard of a number of 230 Volt 907DR's.  I wonder how many there are.

Have you hooked her up yet?

Thanks guys, these alphas are a thing of beauty. I  haven't hook it up for two reasons one of which is the photo below (chaos) the other is my polish friend removed the UK adapted plug so i have to replace it with an Oz one.

@huxmut speakers are going to be a quandary. I have the Celestion DL10s which i use with  my X901 at 150 watt but i have been on the hunt for something more modern for a little while now using you other owners as reference source.363595630_Theworks.thumb.jpeg.11a53aaf8f11bdaab2a8aeedf64e2f49.jpeg

@cafad

Fantastic reviews on your Alphas.

I would love to be able to see how an Alpha 907MR compares to my restored AU-111. My AU-111 uses the same power tubes as the AU-111G. I'm planning on doing the test with my 907 sometime soon and even would love for a higher end Alpha model to compare.

There's already been a review done but not with 907 Limited or NRA.

I have read that article and I was surprised since my findings are that the 907MR is a harder and more detailed sound than any of the other 907 models.  To my mind the "Triple One" really needs to be compared to a 907NRA, now that I would want to hear.

Maybe we can organize a comparo for some time in the new year.

Would be great to do a GTG on just Sansui's.

I think we may be on to something.

Perhaps we need a new GTG thread?
