This is not a whinge.. I just hope cyclists understand motorists who don't pay attention are the minority :thumb:

I know that the majority of motorists pay attention and are respectful of cyclists,  but for my own safety I assume any car within striking distance could be driven by one of the minority.

To get back on topic,

Strapping it on the dog would be cool, on a single image function. You might get some interesting shots similar to Jake's example. A dogs perspective on life.

I think you can have some fun with it.

There are bad road users using every kind of vehicle. Don't tar all cyclists because of the actions of a tiny minority.

This isn't about tarring who or who is right vs who is wrong. Cyclist just aren't protected enough when they're involved in an accident. A friend of mine took six + months to recover from his crash. Six months is a bloody long time, and he's the sole bread winner. We are all made of flesh and bones - they break very very quickly and recover very very slowly.

Better to believe the car within striking distance did not even notice you there. All our mirrors are designed to see cars, not cyclists. So make sure he/she is aware of you before you even move.. Stay safe.. :)

Would be interesting to see some of your go pro videos of you on the road.. I'm only guessing here, but you may well be unaware the dangers you may have placed yourself in.

A question for WA road users... How do you give way to the left in a roundabout?

When inside the round about, don't speed up? (else you'd be hitting the car ahead of you in the roundabout) :D

I don't have a Go Pro but something similar (but not really)

I've used the timelapse function a few times (need to do it more as it's bloody cool).

Also made a head mount from an old welding helmet strap and wore it a few times when we went crabbing.

It's good for shooting HQ footage and then extracting frames as photos.

You'll find a use for it.

A half decent editing program (to edit out the majority of footage) is also recommended.

Nobody wants to watch five minutes of you trying to mount it on your head/bike/dog/bonnet followed by 20 seconds of funny stuff and 10 mins of heavy breathing as you forgot to turn it off when you got back.

;)

Pics from footage:

(Black border and reduced quality due to it being a screenshot off the iPad)

I saw a news cameraman using one in a unique manner today when going past on the bus.

It was outside the Downing Center law courts in Sydney, near Hyde Park.

He had two Nikon DSLR's, the one with a 70-200mm fitted had a little attachment mounted at the bottom left edge of the "L Bracket" , it stuck out about 10cm, he had a GoPro mounted on that.

Pretty neat idea, you can crop in close with the DSLR for stills, and have wide angle video shooting at the same time.

Strap it to your head whilst you do a 2000 piece puzzle. That'll be riveting viewing!

Im going to take one to Phillip Island and ride around on a 50. (edit GP weekend)

There is only one rule. You give way only to a vehicle that is already on the roundabout.

Re using the gopro for something extreme, how about setting up a turntable?  :P

I think you would find that cyclists, knowing full well how unprotected they are... take far more care and concentrate much more than non cyclists would ever believe. Most idiots I see cycling are 1 of 2 sub groups; 1 the uber cool hiptser/pro wannabe, or 2 Ninja cyclists, ie. usually a motorist that has lost their licence and riding to their factory job in black work gear, no helmet and no lights. But even these guys are small minorities of their sub groups.

Amen.

I was a little offended by @ suggestion that I somehow place myself in danger.    I reckon over the last 30 yrs of riding I've done a pretty good job of actively avoiding danger ....except the one time I tried backflip my bmx.

Just a little offended? Obviously I'm not trying hard enough.

FWIW I'm not offended at all by you suggesting drivers don't pay attention..  Just merely pointing out that kind of attitude will put you in danger in the first place- you assume. Over confidence is another attitude that'd put yourself in danger (30 years of riding experience means nothing if you're flipped in the air).

Again let me stress this - even if a motorist is paying full attention, he may not have the god like reflexes required to avoid a collision with a cyclist. Nor god like powers to bend the laws of physics... The potential accidents that can happen between cyclists and motorists is more or less the same between accidents between motorists and long haul trains (just on a different scale).

haha..I wasn't really offended at all.   More disappointed ;)

I get your point that even attentive drivers may not see a cyclist,  but I think you're missing mine.   I think the safest mentality is the assume any driver may not have seen a cyclist.   Whether that's because their not paying attention or whether the cyclist is in a blind spot is irrelevant.

If you ride like that then God like reflexes and laws of physics should also be irrelevant because the cyclist is aware of the possible danger and taken appropriate measures to avoid it.

I can't see how this sort of pessimistic assumption puts me in danger.  If I were to assume I was seen then that's a completely different story.

Well I'm extreeeeeeemly frustrated now.   TOLL seem to have stuffed up the delivery of my new toy.  Delivered to my work and signed for on Friday by a Mr Smith,  but there's no Smiths here and no sign of it.

Posted (edited)

Of course there's no Mr Smith there.

And the person who signed for it isn't gonna use his real name.

Assuming that's what happened....

...in which case that really sucks.

all good now.  Camera was delivered this arvo.     Not sure what happened cos I had 3 different people at TOLL tell me it was definitely delivered Friday.

Now if only the SD card I ordered would turn up!

I'm so bloody extreme now it's not funny.   I got hitched last week and one of the presents was exactly the same GoPro that I'd just bought.    I can now film by BBQ'ing from 2 angles!.

or maybe there'll be a BNIB GoPro silver for sale soon.

Maybe you could extend your extremeness (extremities? Ahem) and have them hooked up to two little drones for alternating views all at once.

Of course, only a house fly could process such an image.

Boring the **** off humans and house flies all at once with the one home movie.

Extreme.
