genkifd Posted January 26, 2020 Posted January 26, 2020 My old electron theatre 7 hums but you have to put your ear right next to it to hear the noise. I've put damping material under my components to reduce the vibrations. 1

Humming ... not to my knowledge and not in my presence!! The colour of my walls are (and doing away with the technical name) dark brown.

Gordon Macfarlane Posted January 27, 2020 Posted January 27, 2020 Seems like a bit of Audiophile nervosa going on here. If there is no hum through the speakers and you have to put you ear on the amp to hear the mechanical hum then ,to be blunt, it is a bit of a non issue imo.. If it continues to bug you then speak to Arthur again and ask what he suggests.
blizzard76 Posted March 6 Posted March 6 (edited) Was searching for a Theatron thread to ask about a hum, but in my case it is from the speakers. I have a Denon 3800 and a second hand Theatron I picked up about 10 years ago. There was initially some issues with crackling in some of the channels but this was resolved by Arthur performing the relay update. Currently I’m midway through upgrading my speakers. I have Kef Q Concerto Meta for fronts and the Q6 Meta Centre. My surrounds are B&W 685s (S1) and the rears are Polk FXiA6 bipoles. I’m planning to change the surrounds/rears to Kef Q4s and/or Q1s. Anyway, I can hear a very faint hum from the surrounds and rears. I can’t notice a hum from the fronts. Also, upgrading from a generic powerboard I was using to a HPM one seems to have reduced the humming a bit. But I guess my question is, should I be getting a hum from the speakers at all? Or should they be completely free of noise when the amp is on but the channels aren’t in use? If it shouldn’t be happening, what can I try to eliminate it? Also, in general will I see much benefit ‘upgrading’ from the Theatron to something newer? Edited March 6 by blizzard76
genkifd Posted March 6 Posted March 6 i dont know if would help. Ive had my Theatron 7 channel amp for around 8 years. When i purchased it used it was already serviced by Arthur. The amp was completely silent. Then when we moved to our new home the amp had a low humming noise. It turned out to the the transformer was vibrating. the bolt was slightly loose. After tightening the hum disappeared.
blizzard76 Posted March 7 Posted March 7 I understand that you mean the hum was being emitted by the physical amp itself, not through the speakers? Is that right? Were you getting a hum from the speakers as well?
genkifd Posted March 7 Posted March 7 Mine what through to the speakers. but the amp was creating the sound
blizzard76 Posted March 7 Posted March 7 (edited) Interesting. I was misunderstanding your posts. I will try tighten the bolt also. Edited March 7 by blizzard76
blizzard76 Posted March 12 Posted March 12 @genkifd It turns out the buzzing is also audible from the amp itself. I haven't yet opened it up and adjusted the bolt, but it seems like I have the exact same issue you did.
