Just gave this a spin and oh my, it's a big call after one listen as I love his previous records (especially the solo stuff)- but I think it surpasses all of Nils Okland's previous work.

New releases by Glauco Venier and Miroslav Vitous

NEW RELEASES BY GLAUCO VENIER AND MIROSLAV VITOUS

Dear friends of ECM,

This week’s releases address different ends of the dynamic spectrum. Czech bassist Miroslav Vitous’s hot band, powered by two great drummers, takes the Weather Report songbook for a wild rollercoaster ride. At the other extreme, Italian pianist Glauco Venier’s first ECM solo album casts the quietest of spells, with echoes of church music in its gentle flow. Common to both albums: improvisational intelligence, musical originality, great sound.

Our current special offer includes a selection of CDs featuring Miroslav Vitous and Glauco Venier.

Best wishes

ECM Records

Glauco Venier

Miniatures

The fifteen ‘miniatures’ of this modestly-titled recording include new music vignettes, composed and improvised, by Italian pianist Glauco Venier. This is Venier’s first solo album for ECM, following three albums with Norma Winstone and Klaus Gesing. Miniatures is a quiet and thoughtful disc, in which solo piano is augmented by subtle, discreet percussion. In addition to his primary instrument, Glauco plays gongs, cymbals and bells, the lightly-struck metals creating an attractive ambience, at times like wind-chimes in the breeze. Miniatures was recorded at Lugano’s RSI studio and produced by Manfred Eicher.

Miroslav Vitous

Music Of Weather Report

The great Czech bassist returns once more to the music of Weather Report, the group he co-founded with Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter in 1970. It’s the improvisational freedom of the early Weather Report that most interests Vitous, and he abides by their old rallying call “everyone solos and no one solosâ€. Well-known Report repertoire re-explored includes “Birdlandâ€, “Seventh Arrowâ€, “Scarlet Womanâ€, “Pinocchio†and “Morning Lake†and Miroslav’s group also plays “Acrobat’s Issues†a piece which the first Weather Report line-up played but didn’t record. Interspersed along the way are three new blues tunes from Vitous’s pen. The band, driven by the astounding double drumming of Gerald Cleaver and Nasheet Waits, is energetic and daring, juxtaposing time playing and rhythmically free pulses, with Miroslav’s arco bass playing sometimes sounding like a third horn in between the two saxophones

thanks buzzard, for the david torn tip-off. great album!!

tonite, been checking out the new jack de johnette - 'in movement'.

accompanied by ravi coltrane and matthew garrison, the old bloke shows that he still got tha funk.

his releases get better as he get's older. he is not scared to progress and push the boundaries of jazz.

like jon hassell, he is good at leading the younger talents and blending new and old mindsets into something wholly contemporary.

he also plays piano on this one.

like the guru said; recommended.

more ecm tonite;

'what was said' - tord gustavsen with simin tander and jarle vespestad.

mostly traditional norwegian songs, beautifully recorded at oslo's rainbow studio.

the piano tone is gorgeous. music is very contemplative, a little new-agey in parts though.

very audiophile-friendly, nice sounds (beautiful in parts) but so far, not one of my solid favourite recent ecm releases.

great hi-fi show demo disc.

Yeah agree, it's not something you want to or can listen all the times, but it's beautiful playing on a dark quiet nite especially on vinyl. [emoji1]

First post here.... I had skipped the thread for ages because I thought it was about Electronic Dance Music "EDM"

Found these two on vinyl last week. First one is sublime, the second one more challenging, but very good. I'll definitely be adding ECM to my mental watchlist.
