brumby Posted September 15, 2015 Posted September 15, 2015 Ah ECM. I got back to where I grew up in Vancouver at the end of 1975 after having spent most of the previous six years travelling around a reasonable portion of the world. The first three or four years had seen me cut off from current recorded music, much of it being in Africa. The last two years had been spent in London, one of the two or three centres of the musical universe. That period made me aware of ECM and Manfred Eicher. His recordings were unfailingly exemplary. His choice of musicians and music never less than intriguing and often masterful. At any rate, a couple of years after I got back to Canada I became aware of a small record shop near UBC (the main university in Vancouver). It had been started by a mate of my brother, who filled in for him behind the till on occasion. The shop specialised in jazz, a good portion of which were ECM recordings. So I was able to hear pretty well EVERYTHING that ECM had recorded from their inception to near the end of the 1970s. They've put out a LOT of fine stuff since then. But in their first decade - 1969/79 - ECM was absolutely unique. 5
