howze Posted April 12, 2015 Posted April 12, 2015 Hi all i was just wondering if anyone has some real worls experience with these speakers, from what ive read online they seem pretty good and ive found a pair for sub $100 and am wondering wether its worth it or not
pete_mac Posted April 12, 2015 Posted April 12, 2015 There are two different versions of note. The original 40-4024 and 40-4024a models have a treated foam surround which does not perish with age (unless mistreated). The 40-4029's have a traditional foam surround which does perish. You can easily tell these versions by the words 'liquid cooled' on the tweeter and midrange level control plate on the front face of the speakers. I have a pair of 40-4024a's which have modified crossovers in accordance with Videolady's work on audiokarma. They are fun party speakers and can rock out with the best of them. However, even after the tweaks, they do have a bit of midrange congestion and are coloured. The sound quality is not as good as a quality two way speaker in terms of accuracy and coherence. Even the humble Usher S520 bests them in this regard... but the Ushers can't rock the house like the Mach Ones! I've used my pair for a mixture of home listening and PA/DJ work. They've been run with a 250WPC PA amp for extended periods of time without complaining at all, which is most surprising. I always enjoyed mixing on them. For $100, the 4024a's are a no-brainer depending upon overall condition. The veneer on mine is pretty rough after many years of party use. The woofers in the 4029's may require refoaming so take that into consideration. Here's some pics of them in my setup about four or five years ago: 1
howze Posted April 12, 2015 Author Posted April 12, 2015 Realistic Mach 1 floor speakers, http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/pasadena/speakers/realistic-mach-1-floor-speakers/1075211394 Thats the add, one does have a replacement woofer in it as he said the original one was cactus
pete_mac Posted April 12, 2015 Posted April 12, 2015 (edited) Ah... the seller needs glasses methinks! They are not Mach Ones... they are the smaller Realistic Optimus X-100 with the 12" woofer. Given the replacement woofer, I wouldn't touch them. The woofer looks like one of the Jaycar 12" drivers. If they were 100% original I'd say grab 'em and see what you think. I guess they could make OK garage speakers as-is... Here are the X-100: Edited April 12, 2015 by pete_mac 1

The Diamonds would be a better all-round speaker for sure.
howze Posted April 12, 2015 Author Posted April 12, 2015 Yeah they are quite nice, just need a replacement tweeter and will probably sell them off though
