These things happens unfortunately. I had a call to them on monday, looks like they were waiting for me to contact them to arrange delivery and i nominated next Monday so i can receive the package.
synthz Posted October 31, 2018 Posted October 31, 2018 Speakers finally arrived on Monday. One of the left driver is dented, mother****er!!! And the base plinth is missing! Does anybody know if the steel base plinth is additional accesories that we need to pay extra or EVERY single pair of PMC floorstanding speakers should come with the plinth? Honestly, i think this would be the last time i buy from GraysOnline... On the other hand, the sounds that i'm getting is quite 'expensive' to say the least, the quality of bass is pretty out of this world.
synthz Posted October 31, 2018 Posted October 31, 2018 I also called GraysOnline to confirm about this, and they're claiming there was a note saying "All accessories and manuals are not included", so i can't dispute anything with them. The plinth is supposed to provide base foundation for the sound, so that it can perform better, almost like putting a bookshelf speaker on a solid heavy stand. So i'm just wondering whether i'm getting short-changed here, in terms of sound quality and accesories supplied? Should i just add 4 spikes on each speaker and call it a day? Does anyone know where should i buy the spikes and the correct spike sizes and the hockey puck thing that sits underneath the spikes?
Irek Posted October 31, 2018 Posted October 31, 2018 Isoacoustics is better than any spikes , even the cheapest "puk" series is much better than any spikes/stands. 1
synthz Posted October 31, 2018 Posted October 31, 2018 Irek thank you for the advice. I might pursue isoacoustics rather than spikes then. Pic of my dented woofer.

Expand No, performance wise i think they're alright. I'm just sad to get it in this condition, even for an ex-demo status it shouldn't be dented like that.
Ray H Posted October 31, 2018 Posted October 31, 2018 (edited) @synthz What a distasteful proposition this must be for you. I would have thought a counter argument is that the plinth is part of the speaker not an accessory. The spikes maybe could be argued as accessories... Im sure that argument wouldnt float with Grays though. Maybe contact a good dealer (Audio Solutions would be a good place to start) or even the distributor, who will normally go out of their way to help resolve an issue like this to create goodwill for the brand, ie you should be able to get a replacement plinth ordered in at the least. P.S, very very careful use of tape or vacume will likely enable the dent to be pulled out, which should look better. Edited October 31, 2018 by Ray H
audio_file Posted October 31, 2018 Posted October 31, 2018 You might be able to fix that dent with a vacuum cleaner. Just start at a low suction strength. The bases are part of every floor standing PMC Twenty range speaker. It could affect the sound, but you also get other manufacturers who make similar functioning stands. These speakers have screw holes to attach the base, so you could even get custom ones made that attach to those holes.

I haven't had much luck lately. I agree that the plinth is part of the speaker, not accesories. When i chatted with GraysOnline they just didn't want to do anything anymore about it. It was handled pretty badly from their end, they didn't talk to their courier company, so the courier just keep my speaker in their depot for ages, if i didn't make the call it probably would stay undelivered. It took me almost a month to get it delivered. One of the box packaging was open when arrived (weird, but i'm already grateful that it ACTUALLY arrives and nothing get stolen! Hmm, did somebody steal my plinth?) Thanks for the tip about Audio Solutions, i might contact them and ask for a solution. I'm pretty bad with 'hand work' so i don't dare to do this type of thing myself. I'll just let it like that for now.
synthz Posted October 31, 2018 Posted October 31, 2018 @audio_file — Thank you for confirming that. I knew the bases should be a part of the item, it's just ridiculous supplying the speaker without the base. Custom base sounds quite interesting too.
ABK456 Posted October 31, 2018 Posted October 31, 2018 Unfortunately, I think this is the kind of risk you take with Grays. A few years ago I bought what was supposed to be a new amp from them. When it turned up it was second-hand and the previous model to that advertised. These are not problems if you can inspect prior, but otherwise... I must add that they refunded my money on return. 1
synthz Posted November 1, 2018 Posted November 1, 2018 @ABK456 wow that was not a good experience! I can see a similar pattern now We just need to be more careful next time with GraysOnline. In my case, this would be my last purchase with them, no matter how enticing the price point is. Doesn't worth the cause. They don't communicate to their courier, they won't give my contact number when the courier driver asked for it. It was quite a bitter experience overall. Did i mention one of the boxes was already open when arrived? It was sealed of course, but someone had opened it and didn't bother to seal it back again.

1224 Posted November 6, 2018 Posted November 6, 2018 I had to chance to listen to some 25.26's hooked up to an Audio research Gsi75 integrated tube amp the other day. Thanks to Tony at Douglas Hifi in Perth! Sounded pretty sweet and more enjoyable than the 700w SS monos, he had hooked up previously. Given that this amp is $25K, Tony recommended( a cheaper option) that I listen to a Primaluna amp. Anybody tried one, how did it go? Seems like everyone is recommending 300w plus SS amps for these speakers...

Short story long I am currently using floorstanders with isoacoustics puk (the puk is design more for studio monitors ). I heard gaia at hifi show. In my system the biggest difference was with bass - it got tighter, snappier, but not just a little bit. I am guessing it doesn't work the same way for every room/system but in my situation it improved the bass and overall sound like jumping from $2K amp to $10K one. Maybe once I get my second system I move the puks to bookshelfs and get gaia for floorstanders.

Yeah from my research looks like the 'puk' is designed to be used for book shelf/studio monitors. It's interesting that you're getting positive results from Puk used on floor standers. I think i'm just gonna get the Gaia since i read about your positive experience.
cafe67 Posted November 7, 2018 Posted November 7, 2018 Hi, out of interest, what is the different between the twenty5.26 and the twenty.26? Spec and price wise they seem similar. Cheers

Expand Grays Online is an auction side but probably concentrating more on B2B, so companies auction their good in large quantities there and public can bid on it. My speakers were listed as 'ex demo'. No accessories are included with it, so i'm thinking to just grab some IsoAcoustics Gaia

I don't belive they make the 20.26 anymore, even though the rest of the tweny series are current, meaning for sale. I've also read the 25.26 use completely different drivers to the 20.26. cheers Frank. 1
Jumbuck Posted November 7, 2018 Posted November 7, 2018 I had a listen to the Twenty5.26 last week and I was very impressed. I have always preferred panels and never found a pair of box speakers (that I could afford) that I really liked. The vocals on the 5.26's were exception imo and overall the speakers were great. Do they really need a big SS amp or are they valve friendly? 1
