bhobba Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 (edited) Hi Guys Yippi. My Magnesium Limited speakers are progressing. Mike has completed the enclosure - see attached picture. It uses a Seas magnesium 6 inch woofer and the Morel Supreme tweeter. Its smaller than the ML2, which means its naturally more rigid, but Mike is making it even more rigid by using 3 large cast iron rods. Its lined with 1/4 inch copper. It will not have an internal port - instead it will bolt to a specially designed stand that will have a long very linear port down the middle. Loudspeaker theory tells us that is the best port design - but for obvious reasons its not often used. There will be a listening session soon to decide on the capacitors - it will be between the Duelund VSF Copper (if available - they have been replaced by the RS), New Duelund RS, Duelund Cast, and the new Jupiter Copper. Should be interesting. When completed and I get it in my hot little hands there will be a GTG at Southport Hi Fi comparing it to my ML2 Limited. Can hardly wait. Thanks Bill Edited April 21, 2015 by bhobba 10
bhobba Posted April 21, 2015 Author Posted April 21, 2015 Who woulda thought Bill? Good news mate. What is it they say about government - their wheels grind slowly but surely. Thanks Bill
ljmac Posted April 21, 2015 Posted April 21, 2015 This will be interesting. Sounds like it might be as heavy as an ML2 Limited despite being smaller. Will be interesting to hear one of Mike's designs with more 'exotic' drivers. When Mike was pondering sticking huge ports in the back of my Limiteds, I did think of suggesting a downward firing port, but I figured that would require a major re-design, which I wasn't prepared to risk - I certainly don't have any complaints about the Limited's bass performance! It will be very interesting to hear how this port configuration performs in the real world.
Sparkle Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 That looks pretty solid. Look forward to more progress! Aren't we all supposed to thrive better under pressure?!! Maybe not then?
Lenehan Audio Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 Hi all Yup this is an all out design or should I say one of the perhaps 3 or 4 all out configurations up for consideration . The others would be 1. Two way Isobaric 2. Three way Isobaric 3. Three way sealed Aperiodically vented . Why this then ? Well Bill was particularly interested in the SOTA potential locked in this little Magnesium alloy driver and I must admit to being intrigued myself. It's reproduction potential is exceptional and the use of a new linear port application means bass could be SOTA. The port itself will be around 750mm long and 90mm ID ! I also have some new IP to experiment with in respect of improving this port again. The enclosure is HD3 lined with 6mm copper plate and utilising 32mm cast iron rod differential cross bracing. This device could be the most " True to the source " loudspeaker I have built ! But do we want true to the source ? Well that depends on the Foda fed to the beast don't it ? I'll keep this thread informed with pics and progress reports as we go ! We should have some sound in a week or so . Best Regards Mike Lenehan LenehanAudio 3
ljmac Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 It will be interesting to hear how well these things work out. Personally I'd never have the balls to commission a design with so many unknown variables - although my ML2 Limited with external crossovers had a lot of new stuff in them, it was all basically logical upgrades and extensions of the existing ML2 platform, which I knew worked very well. It's possible this thing may not come together, like the original S2 prototype with Scan tweeters; after all, this magnesium driver is very different to anything Mike has used before.
Volunteer sir sanders zingmore Posted April 22, 2015 Volunteer Posted April 22, 2015 So ML = Magnesium Limited? I've learnt something.
steve u Posted April 22, 2015 Posted April 22, 2015 Great news. Looking forward to hearing this one. Congrats @@bhobba .....not long now... 1
niss_man Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 So the plan of isobarics have changed. Sorry but I'm not up on the acronym 'sota'? 1
steve u Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Might be good to hear these with the "sota" amp from PSAudio. 1
bhobba Posted April 23, 2015 Author Posted April 23, 2015 (edited) So the plan of isobarics have changed. Sorry but I'm not up on the acronym 'sota'? I am pretty sure its an acronym for state of the art. I think Mike still plans on a 2 way isobaric. Thanks Bill Edited April 23, 2015 by bhobba
niss_man Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Ahh state of the art. I wouldn't know anything about that as I'm more into soma designs.
Guest Muon Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 So ML = Magnesium Limited? I've learnt something. ML = Mike Lenehan

niss_man Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 SOMW = State Of My Wallet is my purchase criteria.Or state of my wife?
Ancientflatulence Posted April 23, 2015 Posted April 23, 2015 Don't have one of them, the wallet would probably be even worse off if I did ...........
niss_man Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 Mike. What's happening with the diy kit speakers at the moment? I was lucky to have a listen today of a system/s of a fellow who says he was going to produce the cnc machined bits for you. Needless to say his tannoys had a few duelund parts in them. Simon

caddisgeek Posted May 23, 2015 Posted May 23, 2015 How many sets of Lenehan speakers do you have @@bhobba?
bhobba Posted May 23, 2015 Author Posted May 23, 2015 Which loudspeaker theory? As found in the Loudspeaker Cookbook by Vance Dickenson Thanks Bill

bhobba Posted May 23, 2015 Author Posted May 23, 2015 How many sets of Lenehan speakers do you have @@bhobba? Ok - lets see A pair a ML1 Reference I tried to sell in the US but that didn't work out and I am getting them shipped back to sell here. My current ML3 Reference A Pair of ML2 Limited I haven't taken delivery of yet - I wanted to compare to the magnesium limited being built. But that took a lot longer than everyone thought - it was supposed to just take a few weeks - famous last words - that was a year ago. The Magnesium Limited that are being built. There will be a number of speakers for sale soon. Thanks Bill
