Happy Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 Frankly, acoustic halls in Sydney ain't all that. I wouldn't really want to have them as the touchstone for my sound reproduction. Sent from my X10a using Tapatalk 2 1
Warren M. Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 (edited) What or which or who's TT?? ATBTase. That could be the rub. Bringing my Once is always a supreme headache, but it is the best sounding turntable system that I can easily get hold of. It's lowest fi component is its Lyra Kleos, and you would need to pay around $6K to get a cartridge which is audibly superior to the Kleos in my opinion. My living room is not the world's best place to hear music, but it has the advantage of a very good turntable system already set up. Open to suggestions. ABG Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 Happy to host at my place Warren, but we would have to limit it to 3 or 4 others. Alternatively, I'm happy to come over to yours or Mendo's. Whatever everyone is happy with. My place is about half way between yours and Mendo's (you're in the eastern suburbs, right?).
Tax Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 Duc et al, I am also happy to host the GA Ref vs JLTi Minimax phonostage shootout in Sydney. My carts are in the 0.14mV to 0.3mV range. We can use either a 12inch arm or 10inch arm. Some red box Classic Records - Brubeck, Gounod, Coltrane and Sarah Vaughan amongst others can be used for comparisons. Duc: you are welcome to stay at my place if you want to bring a phonostage with you and visit Sydney. 3
Tasebass Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 Superiority complex? Give me a break. Most "audiophiles" (certainly excluding the people here of course) have never even once heard a live unamplified performance. They simply have no way to tell what constitutes realism in musical performance. Warren... I spent many a year singing in a church choir in my youth.....listening to a many Pipe organ... One of my Late Aunty's was a music teacher. She and my late Grandfather were both very accomplished pianist's I Remember quite vividly to this day both playing Chopin and a few others regularly on a Sunday night after service. I have been to the Opera House a few times and great as it is the SQ is nothing to write home about IMO. My musical tastes vary hugely and I think I know what "good' SQ is... ATBTase.
Tasebass Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 WOW!!.... this is turning into a serous TT/phono stage event...... Lets make it over a weekend..??? ATBTase. 1
Warren M. Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 I should also point out that Marc has been itching to compare his standard MiniMax against the JLTi. It might not be the right time or place for it, but...
ABG Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 I can throw my poverty pack iFi iPhono into the mix for shits and giggles. I'm yet to hear anything under the $1K mark that embarrasses it, but I haven't listened to all that many...

What you are saying about the Opera House concert hall certainly used to be true. At least where I sit (centre stalls), the sound since the acoustic remodelling two years ago is very good indeed - not quite as good as the best halls (I've been in the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam which is really amazing), but definitely in a different class to where it used to be. As for the Sydney Recital Hall, I can't fault it for small forces. I've never heard an orchestral concert in there, but piano recitals and string quartets are intimate and warm. The concert hall in KL is really interesting - very modern and built using a lot of acoustic modelling. The result is musically exciting but somewhat unemotional. A bit like the difference between good digital and good analogue.
Keith Anderson Posted April 26, 2015 Author Posted April 26, 2015 Thanks for all the suggestions, shame it's turned into mine better than yours crap. But it's given me a few to look at. Good luck with your shootout. One point though, if anyone thinks they can go to an acoustic concert and then think they can tell what an instrument should sound like is delusional. Every hall, chamber, studio will make that instrument sound different, I say this coming from 30 years of playing bass both electric and acoustic in studios, halls, open air concerts, pubs, clubs and everywhere in between. 12
pulinap Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 Thanks for all the suggestions, shame it's turned into mine better than yours crap. That's what happen when one's ego is bigger than one's phonostage....... 7

Joe Rasmussen Posted April 26, 2015 Posted April 26, 2015 How do I contact Joe? I am right here - Warren sent me an email alerting me to the musings going on here - I never thought I would get confused with Joe Riediger - that's a hoot. I am not sure how he would take it though? Have to be careful what I say here - it seems my enthusiasm can get me into trouble and my efforts to educate (I am a teacher and historian by nature) can easily get misinterpreted. I may indeed even be a closet-socialist who believes that all money is evil (he says with a twinkle in his eyes), but in fact the accurate quote is that LOVE (not money itself) of money was the root of all evil. Probably still is. Warren is right, I am very much occupied with Oppos theses days and also I have only done two Minimaxes and not hankering out to do more - if I am asked it will have to wait till I have a small break from my current 'day time' job. BTW, I was never a business partner of Allen Wright - we just worked together for 34 years and indeed I even worked for him for a short while back in the 70's and we just continued to challenge each other in many ways and it was always based on trust. Miss the guy a lot - some of our road trips in Australia and Europe were highlights for me - the discussion could get very exotic at times and not just audio but more like the nature of the Universe and WHO was running it... the truth really is out there! Interesting trivia: Where we met first time is now the actual Soundstage that the Star Wars movies were filmed on. Cheers, Joe 4
