Tax Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 Great looking systems...makes me think that I am almost sane..almost!
Paul Spencer Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 Wow, you know how to find em Tuyen! I'd especially like to hear a bass compression driven horn. Many of them very bold and impressive. Suggests they are going in a separate room and not the living room. No attempt to blend or hide them in the room. Many of them have no toe in and I wonder if that's really a good thing. It's going to ensure that they won't image to the best of their ability, especially with horns that have beaming. Horns might even need toe in more than any type of speaker. I've used as much as 45 degrees with good results. Why toe in with horns? One issue is the sweet spot. It doesn't matter as much if you sit dead centre in one little sweet spot, but move to the side with beaming horns and no toe in and what happens? The closer speaker fires right at you while the other is off axis. The sound stage immediately shifts to the closer speaker, it can often collapse almost completely. Beaming means the off axis speaker is down in output. You can design and setup a speaker to perform well or poorly in this regard. Sit in the sweet spot then move your head to the side. I've noticed in some systems a shift when your head moves as little as 1cm! Many of the speakers I've built have had a broad sweet spot, being dipoles and waveguide speakers. With toe in you can get a wide sweet spot that works pretty well as you move side to side. Then again, you can kill it immediately with zero toe in. Then there is but one seat that works, and sometimes even then that seat can image a little strangely. It's something interesting to listen to when you hear various systems. I have a new horn in the works, another Synergy horn, not quite as big as many of these but still ultra efficient. Should be coming together over the coming weeks and months, but I'll be going for a less bold visual integration, blended into the corner and installed flush in a bass trap that looks like a studio soffit. It will look built in. I have a sub horn in the room that will go under the floor, loaded to 20 Hz. I will have the whole thing horn loaded from 20 - 18k with some direct radiators from 40 - 250 Hz. That will be fun. Quote Great looking systems...makes me think that I am almost sane..almost! I almost start to feel normal too!

I have removed the back cover also, and its remaining like this. More 3d image... definitively a improvement. I sourced a supplier for amt's that run down to 300hz, http://www.indigomesamusic.com/paulsquillo/whats_new.html the guy supplies also Hawthorne http://www.hawthorneaudio.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=3890&sid=087978504b16017dfb98a573b52d380f&start=225 unfortunately, i got no answer. It seems the guy wants to keep his business small, or not ship outside the u.s..... next week or so, i should have a pair of 416a's in Onken W style cab running in my system..... can't wait to see how these perform.....
b.d Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 Good work Angelo, keep us posted if you have any joy with the Atmas. I've been looking for a wider band ribbon/planar for a bedroom setup. Very happy with the Beyma but I think for a super-nearfied setup the center to center distance between my ATM and 15" min/bass driver is too big...was looking for something like the B&G RD's which I believe you have(?), 200-20k is ideal but they are just to big...currently being temped by the Mini Maggies which seem like a pointier source' version of this....
wolster Posted March 1, 2012 Posted March 1, 2012 Great to see Jack's thread still going strong. Come back Jack. We not only miss your contributions but also your great pics.
